NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill Resigns, To Be Replaced By Dermot Shea

NYPD Commissioner James O’Niel has just submitted his resignation to Mayor DeBlasio.

He is expected to make the formal announcement at a press conference with the Mayor this afternoon. NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea is expected to be named the department’s next Commissioner.

There were rumors the past two weeks that this was coming. Some said there was disagreements with Mayor DeBlasio, while some said there was a personal incident which led to this.

O’Niel has been the Commissioner since September 2016. Prior to his appointment as Police Commissioner, O’Neill served as NYPD’s Chief of Department, the highest uniformed position in the department, in 2014–2016.
