Drudge: General Petraeus Is Possible Mitt Romney VP Pick

At the top of his website where millions of eyes will undoubtedly see, the Drudge Report reported early this afternoon that President Barack Obama told a top fundraiser that Romney wants to choose Gen. David Petraeus for the vice presidential slot. The link to Drudge’s own story followed a poll, up earlier on Drudge, asking readers whether Romney should choose the general.

Drudge is polling his readers on Petraeus, who served nearly four decades in the U.S. Army before taking the helm at the CIA under President Barack Obama in September of 2011.

From a flash posted by Drudge Tuesday afternoon:

President Obama whispered to a top fundraiser this week that he believes GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney wants to name Gen. David Petraeus to the VP slot!

“The president wasn’t joking,” the insider explains to the DRUDGE REPORT.

A Petraeus drama has been quietly building behind the scenes.

Romney is believed to have secretly met with the four-star general in New Hampshire.

But at his daily press briefing, White House spokesman Jay Carney categorically dismissed any presidential involvement in floating Petraeus.

“I can say with absolute confidence that such an assertion has never been uttered by the president,” Carney said.

“Be mindful of your sources,” Carney joked, referring to Drudge.

Nonetheless, the Drudge piece immediately sparked conversation — mostly of an incredulous nature — on Twitter.

  1. Highly unlikely. He just accepted a prominent job from Obama, and unless he was announcing an angry resignation in protest, it would look horrible to give up a military career for an elective office. He has no background in domestic politics, which is the focus this year. There is nothing to indicate he is even a conservative on social or economic issues.
