Tuesday could be Newt Gingrich ‘s finale.
The Republican presidential candidate and former House Speaker hinted he could call it quits if he doesn’t do well in Delaware, a state where he’s spent much of his time campaigning.
“I think we need to take a deep look at what we are doing,” Gingrich toldNBC News on Monday. “We will be in North Carolina tomorrow night and we will look and see what the results are.”
Gingrich initially surged, winning the South Carolina primary in January and his home state of Georgia in March. Since then he’s struggled and his team is more than $4 million in debt.
Likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney is expected to sweep all five primaries up for grabs on Tuesday, which includes Delaware, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
Although Rick Santorum dropped out, Gingrich had previously vowed to stay in the race until the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.
But despite the seeming change of heart, Gingrich did say it would be a “mistake” for Romney to immediately start focusing on the general election after Tuesday.
“Governor Romney is clearly the frontrunner but that doesn’t mean he is inevitable,” he said.
