Eric Cantor Backs Romney

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor endorsed Mitt Romney on “Meet the Press” this morning, a major endorsement for Romney ahead of the Super Tuesday vote in which he’s looking for a win in Ohio and elsehwere.

“What I have seen, as you said, a very hard fought primary throughout the last couple months and we have seen now that the central issue of this campaign is about the economy and the country’s got to make a choice,” Cantor said, according to a transcript. ” Who’s going to best be able to lead this economy back to a growth mode, create jobs, so people can feel better about the future. And I just think there’s one candidate in the race who can do that, and that’s Mitt Romney.”

He added, “You know, Mitt Romney is the is the only candidate in the race who’s put forward a bold, pro-growth, pro-jobs plan for the future. You know a lot of the things that he’s talking about in his plan we’re working on in the House of Representatives. And that’s why I look to Super Tuesday. I look to Mitt Romney winning all of Virginia’s delegates. In fact I cast my vote already in Virginia for Mitt Romney and I’m here today to tell you that I’m endorsing Mitt Romney in his candidacy for the Presidency of the United States.”

  1. Cantor is a Virginian, and Romney and Paul are the only candidates on the ballot in Virginia. Not much of a choice. If Santorum or Gingrich manage to win, Cantor can always point out they weren’t running in his state.

Cantor is well respected by both the establishment (“Wall Street” or “Country Club” Republicans) and the Tea Party (for being a pain in the behind for Obama in the House), and is also an good example of the “New south” (a non-WASP conservative whose family was Republican during Jim Crow). Cantor would be a serious person to consider for Vice-President in 2012.

    And he’s a “conservadox” Jew.

  2. The chances of Cantor being the VP pick are nill. There is no way the presidential ticket will feature a Mormon and a Jew. The VP will have to cover Romney’s perceived weaknesses and will be a Protestant and strongly conservative.
