Monticello Police arrested Zaquarntri Legrand (56) and Esaw Wise (66) both of Monticello on Friday 7/4/14. Legrand and Wise were each charged with the felonies of grand larceny in the 4th degree (2 counts) and criminal possession of stolen property in the 4th degree (2 counts). The defendants were also charged with misdemeanors for petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property in the 5th degree.
Legrand and Wise were arrested following an investigation into the larceny of a pocketbook belonging to a 57 year-old woman. The victim had accidentally left her pocketbook behind while at a restaurant in the Village of Monticello on Wednesday 7/2/14. When she realized that she had left her pocketbook behind she returned to the restaurant but her pocketbook was gone. The pocket contained a cellular phone, credit cards and an IPAD. The victim then reported the incident to Monticello Police. Officers reviewed video surveillance at the restaurant, which showed a female accompanied by a male, later identified as Legrand and Wise, taking the unattended pocketbook and leaving the restaurant.
On Friday 7/4/14 Monticello police were able to trace the IPAD via a GPS tracking system to an apartment house located at 25 Starr Avenue in the Village of Monticello. Officers then remotely activated an ICLOUD alarm system on the IPAD, which led them directly to Legrand and Wise apartment. The stolen pocketbook containing the IPAD and credit cards were then found in inside the defendant’s apartment. The defendants were arraigned before acting village of Monticello justice Leo Glass and each remanded to the Sullivan county jail on $10,000.00 bail pending further court action.
