The New York State Police in Catskill are investigating a phone call scam.
On July 22, 2013, a woman from the Town of Cairo reported she received a call from a subject demanding ransom in exchange for the release of her daughter who had allegedly been kidnapped. Responding patrols determined the call was part of a scam.
The State Police were assisted by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Cairo Police Department.
This incident appears to be part of a recent string of similar incidents in Greene, Ulster and Orange Counties, where a call is placed and threats are made to harm a family member of the person receiving the call unless money is wired to a location determined by the caller
The State Police would like to remind the public that if they receive a call from someone demanding money in exchange for the release of a family member to contact law enforcement immediately.
Anyone with information regarding these incidents please contact the New York State Police in Catskill at (518) 622-8600.
