Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty is credited with arresting a burglary suspect red-handed.
Chaboty was on his way to a meeting at 10:35 a.m. Monday when he heard a police radio call from the Sullivan County 911 center of a burglary in progress on Strout Road in the Town of Bethel. Hearing that no police units were available in the area, he went to the location and found a man fitting the description on the porch of a nearby home.
Bethel Constable Douglas Ketchum arrived on the scene and the two interviewed the resident who called in the complaint, who told them he saw the suspect, Michael Weaver, 42, of Mongaup Valley, trying to enter his home. The victim told the officers that his residence had been broken into earlier in the week and that several items had been taken including women’s underwear from a dresser drawer.
Further investigation by sheriff’s detectives later revealed Weaver had broken into the same home three times.
He was charged with three felony burglary counts and is in the Sullivan County jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
