BlackBerry PlayBook Unveiled – To Launch April 19

The iPad had a giant leap on the tablet world, but the competition is about to get stiffer.

Research In Motion (RIM), the maker of the popular Blackberry line of smartphones, said Tuesday its long-awaited BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will go on sale from April 19 at 20,000 retail outlets in the U.S. and Canada.

There will be three models at $499, $599 and $699 respectively, with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB storage capacities. The tablets are expected in Best Buy stores on April 19.

Folks in the U.S. and Canada (where RIM is headquartered) who are interested can visit local Best Buys or by ordering online at Best Buy’s U.S. website or in Canada. Canadian retailer Future Shop is also taking pre-orders online.

RIM says the Blackberry PlayBook would be available at 20,000 retail outlets in the U.S. and Canada.

PlayBook is an 0.9-pound, 7-inch tablet that works in tandem with a BlackBerry smartphone. The device — unlike the rival iPad from Apple — supports Adobe Flash.
