Stocks tumbled Wednesday amid light volume as investors continued to lose confidence in the strength of the global economy in the wake of the Federal Reserve’s grimmer outlook and a softening domestic economy in China.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 265.4 points, or 2.5 percent to 10,378.83 . The market close was the worst percentage drop in nearly a month.
