Hundreds turned out today to mourn the death of a teacher who was killed last night when a van jumped a curb and struck her. Police say Chanie Walfish A”H, 57, was leaving a store in Airmont when she was hit by a van driven by an employee, Gum Ju Sim.
Walfish was a special education teacher at Yeshiva Darchein Noam in Spring Valley.
Rabbi Yakov Horowitz, who is the dean of the school, said that she was a wonderful woman who loved teaching and her students loved her for it.
Many of her students wrote farewell notes to her that were read at her funeral.
Police say they are not planning to charge the driver in the incident.

Mrs. Walfish a”h was an extraordinary woman in that her disposition was always pleasant and happy. She was never seen without a smile and she would cheer up anyone who came across her way. Always the fun, bubbly woman with the jolly demeanor though her life was not always that rosy. May Hashem be with the mishpacha through this terribly difficult time and may they see no more tza’ar, along with the Monsey community who so loved her and the rest of Klal Yisroel.
