A young child and along with his mother were R”L struck and a vehicle in Highland Park, NJ, on Shabbos afternoon.
Sources tell YWN that a vehicle jumped the curb on Raritan Ave and Columbia Avenue – directly across the street from Agudah of Edison and Highland Park.
Tragically, 6-year-old Chaim Kraus Z’L was Niftar from his massive injuries.
Mrs. Rochel Baila Kraus is in critical condition and is currently in surgery. Her name for Tehillim is Rochel Baila bas Gittel.
They were walking to Pirchei at Shul when the accident occurred.

Update: Mother, B”H, came out of surgery and doctors are optimistic. Driver of car arrested, and was most likely texting while driving and suddenly swerved to avoid a car in front of him and went up on the curb.

My heart is crying for this family.
Clearly, texting while driving (distracted driving) is equivalent to drunken (impaired) driving. Some people do not have the self-control necessary to be part of our society.
Cell phone technology today (e.g., Wave) can determine if the cell phone is “moving” or stationary. The cell phone companies should all prevent texting while the user is traveling at a minimum 3-5 miles per hour. The exception should be any texter who holds the phone with two hands. I believe that this would cut “texting accidents” by 97-99.5%.
