Petira Of R’ Zev Wolfson Z”L

YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of R’ Zev Wolfson Z”L, a resident of Lawrence, NY, at the age of 84. He was one of the most prominent philanthropists of Torah & Chesed worldwide.

Mr. Wolfson was born in Vilna, Poland, and came to America at the age of 17 with his mother and his young brother. He immediately went to work, while sending his brother to yeshiva. In no time, he demonstrated a brilliant business mind and turned into a major NYC real estate developer and a very astute Wall Street investor. Among Mr. Wolfson’s many projects was a magnificent skyscraper in a prime location in downtown Manhattan, which started his very successful real estate business.

Mr. Wolfson was blessed with a large family, and many grandchildren. Among his children are R’ Avrohom, R’ Moshe, R’ Aharon and R’ Daniel.

The levaya will take place on Tues, August 14th, at 10:30AM, in the Bais Medrash of Yeshiva Sh’or Yoshuv, 1 Cedar Lawn Avenue, Lawrence, NY 11559.

Shiva will be observed at the Wolfson residence, 140 Harborview East, Lawrence, NY 11559 through Monday after shacharis.

  3. Actually, Shmoel, in 1928 Vilna was in Poland. As a matter of fact, a state of war existed for the entire period between WW1 and WW2 between Poland and Lithuania, because Lithuania wanted Vilna back.

The famous rescue of many Yeshivos, and Jews in general, from Vilna in 1940, occurred because the Russians gave Vilna to the Lithuanians when they dismantled Poland, and therefore, for a short time, Vilna wasn’t under the Communist Russians or the Nazis. Therefore, whoever made it to Vilna had a chance of fleeing Europe if they were able to get visas (that’s how the Mirrer Yeshiva was able to escape, among others).

  4. What an amazing man. I myself was a recipient of his kind and open hand. Those to whom he extended himself, will never forget his unassuming kindness in their dire times of need.
I write in the name of countless families who spent many tough months at the bedside of an ill child. May Mr Wolfson’s memory be blessed as he will be remembered forever.
