Many were on hand to be melave HaGaon HaRav Yechiel Tzvi Shapira ZT”L on Monday, the second day chol hamoed Pesach. The niftar was rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Tal Torah in Yerushalayim. He was the bechor of HaGaon HaRav Yehuda Shapira ZT”L, rosh yeshiva Chazon Ish. He was in his 70s and was niftar after years of suffering from failing health.
HaMevaser quotes those who knew the niftar, described as one whose gadlus in Torah and Yiras Shomayim were dwarfed by his modesty and his commitment to follow in the footsteps of his late father, spreading the Torah of the Chazon Ish ZY”A.
As a youth the niftar learned in Yeshivas Eitz Chaim and then in Slobodka in Bnei Brak. It was there that his rabbonim began to appreciate the abilities and commitment of this young talmid.
The niftar headed the Tal Torah Kollel for years, a beis medrash modeled to place an emphasis on the Torah of the Chazon Ish.
He suffered a stroke two years ago and since then, his health declined. Two months ago he was admitted to Shaare Zedek Medical Center and was niftar during the early morning hours on the 17th of Nissan 5772.
Among those attending the levaya was Maran HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach Shlita, HaGaon HaRav Avraham Yitzchak Ulman Shlita (a member of the Badatz Eida Chareidis) and HaGaon HaRav Chaim Yisrael Shapira Shlita (Rosh Kollel Shaare Torah Bnei Brak).

I had the zchus of learning in Kolel Chazon Ish for many years and could only say that Reb Yudel Shapiro zt”l the father of the niftar, and a close talmid of the Chazon Ish zt”l,was a perfect dugma of “man malkei? Rabbonon” His daily hisnahagus was mamash the way a melech of torah would be. He was a yungerman all his life who learnt with enormous hasmadah. I still hear his sweet gentle voice suddenly erupt in a volcanic like reaction to defend a svara or a pshat to the person that would talk to him in learning. Every one of his sons have the same qualities of their father and all follow in his path of unassuming gadlos. The niftar being the bechor of the family was the fire of torah. The entire family should have a nechomo knowing that they are from the elite of bnei torah and klal yisroel.
