But people moving from Borough Park and going to bring Borough Park with them.

Anytime people from one place to another, they will bring part of the old place with them

Question – If these people would rather live in NY – then let them buy out in NY – why Ramapo or Lakewood?!?

I suspect most of the people complaining were already there or had family there. Non jewish people are not really looking to move to Ramapo or Lakewood. but people already there , dont want to move. Or someone who was from there, might want to remain (Like and adult child who grew up and wants to live where they grew up)

You usually dont build a Mega Church in the same place as a shul or yeshiva. People want to be able to walk to Shul or Yeshiva, but they want to be able to drive to a Mega Church or university so they need a large parking lot. Yeshivas and Shuls dont really want this, so you would build the Mega Church or University on a main street like Route 59. You would not build a Shul there (You might build a Yeshiva there , like a School but not a yeshiva with Shabbat or Yom Tov Servies)

I read the article, and the point is the Suburbs mean something different to non-jews and not chradi jews than to charedi jews.

Im not sure some understand the idea of being a good neighbor vs anti-semitism.

Its not anti-semetic to not want a 5 story yeshiva on your block

Richard Joel is not the Rosh Yeshiva of YU, He was the president of YU. Rav Schecter is the Rosh Yeshiva of YU

In general the more modern places are run differently. A board of directors controls the place and in fact the board of directions fired Richard Joel.

There is no such power at BMG

Say a gadol buys the land next to your house and decides to build a 10 story Yeshiva.

Would you have the right to protest, would you have the right to protest at the zoning board?

Remember a 10 story yeshiva dont always bring good results. People late for minyan might block your driveway. The yeshiva might block your views. The yeshiva will be loud

The problem with Kosher tours like that is that they are too expensive for me.

I can only go to cool and interesting places if I go by myself and use hotel and airline points.

I went to Italy for free (only had to pay for food and other incidentials like museum admissions and souveniers)

Even if you go to a place with a Chabad house and maybe a young Israel. Many of them do not have weekday minyanim as they cant get a Minyan. They can only get Minyanim on Shabbos and if they are able to get Shachris Mincha/Maarriv is still tougher

Ive been to the National Parks and Ive seen other frum people around, they are scattered so minyanim are not really possible. Plenty of frum people go there.

Yellowstone National park is especiually large and difficult to arrange minyanim as people stay all over

I don’t see how the yeshiva profits from the development.

Its very expensive to run a yeshiva of that size and there is only so much money that can be obtained from geverim. You need to have a source of income to help pay the expenses. There are plenty of shuls, yeshivas eta that own real estate or other busineses

Definitely much worse especially with all the technology yetzer haras today.

There were other issues in previous generations. Do you know how many jews converted to christianity because of persecutions .

Did you know there were at least 3-5 churches in the Warsaw Ghetto

While some jews convert to christinaity today, its not what it once was, people arent converting to escape persecutions

The crusie ships are really big, You can sometimes see them in bayonne, NJ or Brooklyn. They hold thousands of people the kosher market isnt big enough for a totally kosher cruise.

There is something called a riverboat crusie many times down the Danube, that are much smaller

She does say that she would be happy if it got in the newspapers, but that is not the same thing.

While calling newspapers and tv/radio stations is one way to spread news. It many times isnt that successful especially since newspapers are dying

If you really want to spread the word about something , you need it to go viral, especially since here it seems to be a dispute more than anything

The issue is that right in the middle of a very congested area there are plans to develop a huge mall (50 acres, with almost 900 parking slots. 13 large stores). The infra structure cannot support so much additional traffic. It is not just off a major highway. It is off of two lane through streets. Or something like CIA for Cedarbridge.

Thats not what she said in the video. she said lakewood ihr Hatorah is a makom where people moved to avoid this.

She acted like it was a religious issue, not a infrastructure issue

Not sure what her point is, There is a large very nice shopping mall in Freehold and there are alot of large Stores in Toms River and there is also a large mall in Monmouth Mall

All are very close to lakewood, All she is doing is causing people to travel 10-15 mins away and giving the money to Goyish businesses

LB: One can only eat these type of matzos on Pesach if they have a specific tradition (minhag) to do so. You must consult a Rav.

Actually that is the tradition, the Hard cracker like Matzas we eat today are actually a new invention as they last longer and are easier to box.

Most people do not bake their own matza, so the bakery does it and they need to do it in such a way that it lasts a while

The Soft matzas do not last very long, they get stale like bread

At some point, is observance automatic?

Yes it is. for example its alot easier to keep kosher if you always kept kosher than if you did not keep kosher for a while. If someone grew up eating and like shrimp or lobster, Its alot harder to give that up than if you grew up not eating it.

Some can belive whatever they want, but by the year 1900 NYC was by far the largest jewish community in the world , it was more than double of Warsaw, Yet the largest jewish instutitions in NYC at that time was JTS . It wasnt until 1917 that Torah Vodass was founded about the same time as Yeshiva Of Brooklyn.

Things in the US would have been alot different had things been started to be built in the 1900’s rather than the 1950’s and 1960’s

And you can also go on a regular cruise and order kosher food (Airline food) without paying any extra money

Chassidism was not exactly a voluntary option. There was a massive crisis of faith at that time due to The Cheminksi Massacares, the Shabbtai Tzvi false Messiah and the general situation of persecutions and poverty.

    People were losing hope

Before World War 2, the Gedolim forbid going to the US or Israel or any other Anglo country (Canada and Great Britain)

What would you call the change that moved the center of Charedism to the US and Israel. Is that a Hashfakic Change or a sociological change?

I cant say for Israel, but in the US a Gadol has to be very careful about elections

While a Rabbi can endorse anyone they want, they can only do so as an individual. If they do so as the head of a Yeshiva, Shul or any organization they risk losing the non-profit status of that organization.

    1. What do you mean by “opportunity”? Weren’t the zionists the ones who created the opportunity? Why couldn’t that have been done previously? (It’s possible you are right and it couldn’t have been done – I am just wondering why.).

It was very difficult to move to Palestine before 1917. The Turks who controlled it allowed very few jews to move there and the ones who were able had trouble because it was difficult to make a parnassah there .

As a side not the Gedolim also forbid jews from going to america as well. They called it a Treif Medina and quote obvioulsy they changed their mind

    2. Maybe I’m wrong, but I didn’t think that the Mizrachi movement was started by Gedolim or that there were any Gedolim who considered themselves Mizrachi. But again, I could be wrong.

Amazing you could forget Rav Kook, It is true his zionistic leanings were not the majority and were a Daas Yachid at the time. He was definatly in those circles. I forgot exactly what, but he had something to do with Rav Elyshiv wedding (I think he was Masadar Kiddushin)

There’s no question that all streams are different than Jews were in the past, the difference between each of today’s streams is how they have adapted to today’s reality.

Everyone thinks that they have adapted in the manner that our gedolim from the past (going back to Chazal and even earlier) would have wanted, and therefore “default” Judaism, and the others are “movements”.

The State of Israel itself is not a “minor socialogical issue”

Its very differnt to say Next Year in Jerusalem when its unlikely you will ever go there in your lifetime and when you can go tommorrow if you like or even live there

Living in a place where Jews control the government is very different than living in a place where the government is Hostile to jews (Dont compare the modern state of Israel to Czarist or Communist Russia) or in a place that is benevolent to jews (The US) where you can pretty much do what you want and the government will support your decision
