The reason why they removed Pluto is there were other celestial bodies in the Solar System similar to Pluto like Ceres. In fact Ceres is bigger than Pluto

We have sent Satellites into Space, notably Voyager 1 & 2 and New Horizons.

So they have sent back photographs of Earth from their positions. Voyager 2 I belive has hit the Kuiper Belt . And from that view you can see that the earth revolves around the sun and get a different view of the universe

I think we can all agree that Leon Trotsky, Theordore Hertzl and David Ben Gurion were not the same people. They also had different idiologies, that they were all secular doesnt mean they were the same.

Herzl BTW angered alot of people when Palestine was unavailble and Uganda was suggested as a jewish home instead.

Early Zionism, Bolshivism and Bundism are also not the same ideologies. Bolshevism and Bundism were anti-zionist and said jews should get rights in their own countries.

So whatever the Chofetz Chaim said about Trotsky is irrelevant to the Chazon Ish and Ben Gurion and if the Chazon Ish said it was OK to say Ymach Shmo about Herzel, doesnt mean he said the same thing about Ben Gurion.

Obviously not all news stories are accurate, However this one was talking about when Ben Gurion met the Chazon Ish about drafing women into the IDF.

I really doubt the Chazon Ish when meeting Ben Gurion to discuss drafing women, Would refuse to look at him and call him a Rasha. That is not a way to convince someone of anyting

How about a source where the Chazon Ish refused to look at Ben Gurion?

The news source quoted, said they had a very amicable meeting. You dont have to like the source quoted, but it is a source and they have no reason to lie for this story, In fact they would likely lie against the Chazon ish , if anything

It wasnt google, it was from a Newstory.

If you are going to make a statement about the Chazon ish, You should make sure its the truth.

Its like so many other stories about Gedolim, Just because someone said it or heard it, doesnt mean it actually happend

I did a quick google about the meeting between Ben Gurion and the Chazon Ish. Only one other person was in the room with them, Yitzchak Navon.

So its very possible the fact that the Chazon ish put his hand over his head is false

I am not sure if most people are Athiest (Dont belive in god) as opposed to either Agnostic (Dont care) or just anti-religion (Unfortunatly many relgious people of all faiths have caused massive “Chilul Hashem” by their actions) especially the Catholic Church. While we are not catholic, The actions of the church has had a negative reaction to many and caused a sourness on religion

the halcha of someone with a Jewish Father is that they are not jewish. The term lately has been “Zera Yisroel” literally seed of israel.

That is a more complicated issue, not because they are halachic jews, They are not. But you need to tread that issue more delicatly because it can cause issues especially if they show up at a kiruv event or single event and you dont want to embarass someone

There are lots of high paying jobs in NYC area, not just wall street.

Even other jobs pay higher in NYC than elsewhere. Doctors make more in NYC than elsewhere.

Someone told em recetnly thaat they commute from the Poconos (At least 2 hours each way) because Nurses in NYC make over $100,000 and Nurses in the Poconos make about $40,000

Ive never met anyone who was one of them where it was a philosophical discussion. It was either told to me in passing (Not that they told me they were committing any specific Averiah) only that they felt that way. They might tell me directly that they were leading an “Alternative Lifestlye) but not they committed any Averiahs from Vayikra specifically

Or their mannerisms are such that give off that they are such a person, You do not need to ask.

And BTW just like on the Job you are not allowed to quote Psukim in Vayikra about this Averiah, They are not allowed to tell you that the bible is fake and “Phobic” against certain kinds of people. They will get in trouble for that.

It is possible you might see someone being Mechalal Shabbos or eating at McDonalds. You are unlikely too see anyone doing averiahs specified in Vayaikra even if you suspect they are Oyver them

The Survery was based on Income vs Real estate costs. Jeruslaem is not the most expensive city strickly on Price, however once you add in incomes it is.

So NYC is actually more more than Jerusalem in actual dollars, but its more affordable since you can make more money. There are ways in NYC to make enough money to pay for a $1 million dollar apartment (Like Wall Street Banker). Those ways do not exist in Jerusalem

in reply to: How do people afford apartments in Israel? #1218497

The truth is is probably some inheritance. Real estate in Israel is insanly expensive, Jerusalem was ranked as the most unaffordable city in the world (Tel Aviv was up there too).

New York was also on the list, however at least people in NY can sometimes make enough money to pay the insane real estate as the jobs are good. This is not the case in Jerusalem where good high paying jobs are not available.

Ive seen apartments in some desireable neighborhoods like Rehavia in Jerusalem going for over a Millions DOLLARS (Real Estate in Israel is priced in Dollars not Shekels). People in Jerusalem dont make that kind of money. The higher paying jobs in Israel are in the Tel Aviv-Herzyliah area.

I was told rentals in Israel are more reasonable

Usually it doesnt come up in a conversation, you just know.

Most such people you will come into contact fall in the following categories

R’L Close friends and family. I know a few frum people in that circumstance and I am not going to touch it

A co-worker. If you say ANYTHING, you can either be reprimanted or fired. Most companies have policies that prevent you from saying or doing anything (and they cannot say anything to you either)

A potential client. If you say anything, they will just take their business elsewhere. do what you want, there is nothing illegal for them to take their business elsewhere

Unless you are a direct follower of a Rav and he tells you specifically what to do in a certain circumstance, One does not have to follow the Shitta of a Rav because you think his shitta is better.

the OP is a Baal Tshuva and appears to be going along a Chabad path, She is under no obligation to follow the Psaks of Rav Shach if Chabad has a different Shitta (I have no idea what the Chabad’s psaks are in this circumstance). If the OP wishes to follow Rav Schecter or Rav Lichtenstein, she may also do so (Again I have no idea what their Psaks are in this circumstance)

Sometimes people admire you and sometimes they dont, it all depends what kind of people you meet. Generally those who are more religous admire you, however there are plenty of anti-relgious people out there (They are not Anti-semetic, they are against pretty much all relgions, if you were an Evangelical Christan they would not like it either) who do not.

There is no way to know what kind of people you will meet unless it comes up in a conversation.

For those who think they know what Hashem thinks, Do you think hashem smiles on those people who refuse to sit next to women on airplanes causing a ruckus calling it a great kiddish hashem or do you think hashem frowns on what a chillul hashem they have caused

There are more than one opinions on this topic and you need to decide when to use the more machmir opinion and when to use the Kula.

When you are dealing with the outside world you need to figure this out for yourself

The Rav Shach story is missing information, there are people who are willing to do any averiah to get an account or job , we are not talking about that

You missed my point , it has nothing to do with which camp you consider yourself part of. But more you seem to be always willing to give the benefit of the doubt to more charedi people, but not so much to people on the more modern side. Its perfect OK to disagree with someone on your camp and agree with people on the other side. It does not damage your principles.

Personally I certainly think the charedi communities have more of a sense of community than the more modern communities and are more willing to help than the more modern ones and try to make the Yeshiva tutitions more affordable than the modern communities where tuition very well might destroy the community

Good for you, When your boss is an “alternative lifestyle” , Would you quote them Vayikra?

How about a Co-Worker? Would you tell them that they are wrong. You do those things, you can get fired. its illegal to discrimate against those groups or say anything.

I know people who did say something and they got punished by the Human Resources Department at the place of employment

How about a potential Client of a large account, Would you tell them that their lifestye is wrong and lose the account?

I know SIDS was caused by the baby stopping breating, I did think it was caused by the baby sleeping on its stomach. Babies ALWAYS need to be put to sleep on its back. A baby cannot be allowed to sleep on its stomach until it knows how to turn by itself.

Alot of things done in previous generations we have learned is very dangerous

Just smile at them nicely and say, “I’m so sorry, but I don’t shake hands for religious reasons”. Chances are they will respect you. And if they don’t, that’s their problem.

If they are a big client and they get insulted, then it is YOUR problem.

Some will respect and some wont and there might be cases where you are introduced to a man and a woman together, then the “Tissue trick” doesnt work”

Those same people go to Scachris and then rush to their jobs, they do not have time to change.

Likely if there was a jacket rule some would not go, you need to encourage people to go, not discourage them

Just because someone is more frum and has an idea that sounds good on paper, doesnt mean its not foolish and dangerous. Foolishness and dangerous needs to be condemed just as much as an “Alternative wedding”

You see it as Sinas Chinam, I dont. I see it the proper way to behave when you meet someone

Lets say you meet a chiloni of an “Alternative Lifestyle”, its not really a good idea to yell at them for doing an averiah in Vayikra and then give him a vort from your rebbe on the evils of this averiah

Lets say you meet a Dati leumi Settler, I dont think discussing Chiudishim from Vyoel Joel is such a good idea

And Finally if you meet a Charedi, Dont discuss with them the Super Bowl game.

I like to celebrate peoples differneces, not their sameness. If everyone was the same life would be pretty boring

WTP is correct, I forgot about the Baby sleepers and not blankets. Blankets are only used when you are holding the baby not when they are sleeping by themselves.

Please stop trying to defend the idea of having a tallis with strings anywhere near a baby, It doesnt belong there under any circumstances. Its never safe. babies get into all sorts of trouble. You need to minimize the danger at all times.

I personally got rid of all wires in my house that were easily accessable. I got rid of lamps and had lights installed directly

When I use a particular term, its not meant to demean anyone, it is just stating what group they belong to. While we can all say they are Jews. We can agree a Chiloni from Tel Aviv is not the same as a Dati Leumi Settler from Kiryat Arba who is not the same as a Charedi from Bnei Brak and its not prejorative to say so

Im not sure myself where the term originated, but I suspect it comes from Eida HaCharedis, In english the actual term used is Ultra-Orhtodox , but that is seen as the pejorative and charedi as just a neutral term.

In general words do change meanings over the years and sometime the same words could mean 2 different things to 2 different people

Im not sure exactly how long the strings are vs the size of the neck of the baby, however if the baby wraps enough of the string it can pull the main part of the tallis itself around the neck and choke the baby

I cant belive some chassid shoteh would even recommend such a foolish idea.

No normal person keeps a choking hazzard near a baby
