Better for someone to get a BA in English than a BA in Cocaine which is what happens many times if the person has nowhere to go

The Chofetz Chaim refused to learn by eletric lights and would only learn by candlelight. he felt it was too modern to learn from electric lights. perhaps we should all learn by candlelight

People lived for thousands of years without Electric Lights and Indoor Plumbing. Just because something was done a certain way in the past, doesnt mean its the correct way

I remember when i was sitting shiva for my mother a”h and someone pulled out their cellphone i just thought it was the tackiest thing you could do at such an occasion.

I dont know the specifics and I dont know you or the person, but it could very well be the person was expecting some important information. Sometimes I tell people that I am somewhere important and dont call me, but send me a text so as not to interfere and if the text is important then I will call otherwise I can ignore

There is a certain attitude in the New York area about elitism and outdoing the Joneses (ie better car, nicer house) etc. Unfortunatly it seems some of these attitudes have infiltrated the frum communities in the NY area, expect its not outdoing the Joneses by a nicer car but outdoing the Goldbergs by outfrumming them and these attitudes can be very damaging to those who cannot keep up

In the UK the government pays for Yeshivas, therefore they have the right to dictate policy. For those clamoring for Vouchers here in the US, Be careful what you wish for, They will give the money and then demand the right to dictate policies

    2) Do you believe that your health & wellbeing is ultimately determined by:
    A) Your diet, exercise, and other lifestyle choices
    B) Advances in medical knowledge
    C) Genetics
    D) Dumb luck
    E) Hashem

I am willing to bet that someone who eats foods high in fats and lots of sugar like candy and Coke and sits down all day will not be as healthy as someone who exercises 1 hour a day and eats alot of vegetibles and drinks water. I am also willing to bet that a non-smoker is healthier than a smoker

To many the Lvush , the beard and Peyes are very important as is shaving the hair.

If you change your dress, shave your beard and cut your peyes or let your hair grow its as good as going reform

The cost is not in the millions (Maybe over a period of many years)

You dont need a Brownstone in Brooklyn, you can rent a non-decript office in a non-chassidic part of Brooklyn for about $10,000 a month (Privacy needs to be important so a non-jewish area would be better)

You need 3 or 4 staff members to start, A secretary, Social Worker and a Rabbinical Advisor and a place you can rent (If if the office is not big enough) for group events once a week or one a month.

You can do for about $400,000 a year and you can combine the Social Worker and Secretary at least at first to save some funds. You also might be able to get some rooms at some shuls for free or discounted also to save some funds

For those suggesting Project Makom, If you check the website it seems to be a little outdated and I havent heard of many events lately. It started with a bang and seems to have fizzled. I dont know why or the specifics, If there are no events and little help like the Anti-kiruv organization gives then it is doomed to fail

If people with Mental Health problems only place to go is an anti–kiruv organization, then we have failed. They are not responsible for the suicides we are, as we did not give them a place to get better

The Anti-Kiruv organization is more successful than you are willing to admit. Its alot more than 100.

Some of the people who go to that organization are “Alternative Lifestyle” and Im not sure how to deal with such people in a frum environment.

Jersey City is a large city in general and on the upswing and becoming gentrified because its close to Manhattan and a short Path train ride away from manhattan. It is becoming the next Williamsburg and I dont mean the chassidic part, but rather the Hipster part

Ladino lost its spanish connection when the jews were exilled from Spain in 1492 and then became similar to other languages depending on where they jews lived, So in Greece, Ladino became closer to Greek .

Unlike French, which has an official language institute which must approve new words, Yiddish is ever changing and evolving.

As stated before the YIVO is the official Yiddish Language institute. Chassidim however do not follow what the YIVO declares to be a yiddish word and French speakers may borrow an english word even against the French language insititude’s ruling

Not just Europe, but in most countries of the world they use their own language , whatever that is and the Latin Alphabet as well. meaning if you go to Tokyo Japan, the signs will be in Japanese and Latin Equivalent

Its not hard to ride the Paris Metro if you can read the latin Alphabet , even if you dont speak a word of French

There is no such thing as “Modern Yiddish”, because languages change and old words fall into disuse and new things and ideas come into being (Like Brexit for example) Yiddish has broken into 2 parts

The YIVO yiddish which is the “Official Yiddish” and they decide what is a yiddish word and what words to to be used for these new inventions and ideas. Almost every language (Except English operates the same way, there is no institute for English)

Chassidic Yiddish does not hold by the YIVO and they just borrow english words, so modern Chassidic Yiddish is really Yinglish, If you listen to it enough you will understand without much difficulty

While Europe was a Power Keg waiting for war, Austria would not have declared war on Serbia had not a Serbian Nationalist assisanted Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28. The assisation of Franz Ferdinand is generally accepted as the event that began World War I

World War I was not like World War II, which officially started when Germany Invaded Poland on September 1, 1939

The start of World War I did NOT start on Tshiva B’Av. I dont know who started that theory, but its not true

There was no official start of World War I, It took a few months to get going as it began as dominoes fell. The one event that started the dominoes to fall was the assisination of Archdule Franz Ferdinand which was on June 28,1914, the 4th of Tammuz

As a side note July 4, 1776 was Shiva Assar B’Tammuz

Some people really arent interested in Theology. Most people who are OTD probably fall into that category

I think thats part of the problem on both sides. If you love Yiddishkeit its almost unfathanable that someone has no interest or little interest in it.

If a bocher says he doesnt like learning and hates Gemorah, People cant belive its true.

A place needs to be found for such people and until we are admiiting that such a thing exists, there will be no solution (Perhaps there is no solution and drop-outs are just par for the course) and we have to live with it

The story of the Brisker Rav and the Maskil is actually irrelevent. The Maskilim were anti-religion. Most people today are not anti-religious, but just non-religious, They are not interested in debating Rabbis, they have no interest in Rabbis

There is an amazing insight in β€œOhev Yisroel” this week. He explains that the ONLY way to protect small children who do not have yet enough of their own abilities for protection is when the parents do mitzvos with kedusha, it creates a holy angel that protects the children.. so we do have some control on our children’s decisions by doing the right things ourselves

There are some well known people who went OTD whose parents were very chashuv people

Most people went OTD in the Alter Heim because of economic reasons. While there certainly were a few that had theistic reasons, the majority was simplye economic reasons. You could not earn ends meet in the Shtetl and you had to either go to the Big cities like Warsaw or the Godena Medina

The difference between Modern Hebrew and “Loshon Hakodesh” is the differnce between modern English and Shakesperean English. Meaning some words go into disuse and new ones are created

“Loshon Hakodesh” or what some claim it is, is just Hebrew without those changes, so there is no words for “Car” in Loshon Hakodesh

There really isnt a revival of Yiddish among secular jews, Even the Folksbien has to perform many of its shows in simulcast in English because there are few Yiddish speakers left.

Its about $5000 for a normal baby delivery and about $15,000 for a c-section

Both are assuming mother and baby are healthy. If there are complications, the payments can sky-rocket. A Premie in NICU can cost in the MILLIONS if the baby has to be there for a significant amount of time (Like months)

In the free market of insruance companies, Frum people would be considered undesireable

Woman having alot of kids (Pregnacies cost money) and kids are always getting sick, so large families equals large insurance payouts. There is no way the insurance companies can make money on a frum family that has a kids every 15 months, they would just dump them
