zahavasdadParticipantHowever most people cannot play Quarterback in the NFL, so these jobs are not easily replaceable. Thats why the players have some say
zahavasdadParticipantNFL Players (and All sports players for that matter) are not paid employees, they are independent contractors. Its not Paid time

Of course there is, and if you are in a place without internet access, thats called Gehenom
September 19, 2017 10:18 am at 10:18 am in reply to: Why its important to show pictures of Married Couples #1366704zahavasdadParticipantThere is a famous Gemorah in Brachot where a talmid followed his rebbe to the most inappropriate places and when confronted the student said, This too is torah and I must learn it.
Everything a Gadol does should be a teachable moment, And not just his shiur , You can learn from the way they conduct themselves in normal every day occurances.
Nothing a gadol does is wasteful or useless even a picture from a moment in time and we should learn from that moment
September 18, 2017 10:01 pm at 10:01 pm in reply to: Why its important to show pictures of Married Couples #1366585zahavasdadParticipantThe rebbitzen is not driving, She is sitting on a bench
zahavasdadParticipantYou are allowed to postpone Jury duty, just give them a date, Try to give in December (Courts are less busy then and want cases over before the new year)
September 18, 2017 12:00 pm at 12:00 pm in reply to: Why its important to show pictures of Married Couples #1366254zahavasdadParticipantPeople do not normally take pictures of Gedolim without asking (And the only people who would would want something for misuse) and this picture does appear to have been taken at a normal distance (Not some super Telephoto lense from a mile away). its likely the Shevet Levi agreed to this picture.
I belive this rebbitzen was he second wife and he did not want her to feel that way.
The gemorah in Brachot discuss all the things we can learn from Gedolim from everyday activities .
September 15, 2017 3:38 pm at 3:38 pm in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1364467zahavasdadParticipantLatin was the Language of the Romans, not sure why Chazal would say they didnt have a language
While I dont know where the Latin Alphabet comes from, I can tell you from my travells Its alot easier going to a country with a Latin Alphabet than going to one without it. Even if I cant pronounce any of the words, I can read the street signs easily. Having an Alphabet that nobody else uses is a problem in todays global world.
The exact number of words in any language is impossible to count, as some languages allow compond words with grammar and english allows alot of latin scientific words
zahavasdadParticipantIts called Steak Tatare. Not for me, but its a famous dish
September 15, 2017 9:49 am at 9:49 am in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1364237zahavasdadParticipantI dont think studying it is the problem, I really think its the way its presented
People study dead or dying languages all the time and in fact in Ireland, Irish (Gaelic) is taugh in public schools, but the general population wants to speak english
I was once at a small gathering of about 30 people. Maybe 3 of 4 spoke Yiddish. Someone got up to say a Dvar torah who was a native english speaker and purposely gave the dvar torah in Yiddish when he knew most people did not understand it without any translation. This would never occur in any other language. Can you imagine if this was ancient Greek , People would expect a translation or for the speaker to speak in English (Unless it was a seminar in Ancient Greek)
September 15, 2017 9:07 am at 9:07 am in reply to: Lakewood’s Traffic becoming unbearable, any solutions? #1364218zahavasdadParticipantThere is plenty that can be done, however you cannot force people to comply.
You can encourage more walking , You can make better bus service and you can make Bike lanes and encourage people to bike however none of these will work unless people will change their habits
September 14, 2017 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1364088zahavasdadParticipantOf course Yiddish is derived from Old German
But french and Spanish are derived from Latin
And English is derived from German and French
Just because a language is derived from another language (as most are) doesnt mean its not a real language
September 14, 2017 2:12 pm at 2:12 pm in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1363614zahavasdadParticipantYiddish is not Pidgin german, it is Yiddish its own language. With a whole history , culture and Literature with it.
The problem none of these are taught and the yiddish spoken is lousy Yiddish and its taught at the expense of English and Hebrew. if AFTER your kids speak , read and write perfect english you want them to learn Yiddish, Gezun Deh heh. And when you do, make sure its GOOD Yiddish and not Yinglish
September 14, 2017 10:34 am at 10:34 am in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1363487zahavasdadParticipantThe Torah is the Tool and the only tool to keep someone Frum. Not any language.
September 13, 2017 5:16 pm at 5:16 pm in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1363122zahavasdadParticipant“Does the practice of speaking Yiddush have value as an anti-assimilation tool?”
If the only way people will be frum is to make them speak a language nobody else understands and not let people speak the language of the country, then there is something wrong with your yiddishkeite
zahavasdadParticipantThey have done scientific studies that people prefer female voices. That is why usually the GPS is a female voice and not a male voice
In real life, how many men would ask a woman for directions anyway
September 13, 2017 1:35 pm at 1:35 pm in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1362753zahavasdadParticipantThe US State Department ranks language learning difficult levels on a scale from 1 to 3. 1 being easiest for an english speaker to learn and 3 being the Hardest. Germanic Languages (Except German) and Romance Languages are 1 and Asians languages are usualy a 3. German is a 2 they estimate it will take 1000 hours to become fluent in german as opposed to 400 hours to become fluent in French or Spanish. It is not so easy for an english speaker to learn german.
I agree that learning a foreign language is useful and good and yiddish is a secondary language, my issues with it are that is languages are more than just speaking, its reading and writing. There are very few books a frum jew would read in yiddish and the only sefer I know of is the Tsnea Urena . The other good books in yiddish are unlikley to be taught in a chassidic school like Tevye the Milkman (Fiddler on the Roof).
I also strongly disgree with making yiddish primary over english (or Hebrew in Israel) as one must communicate in the local language and people treat you by how well you know the local lanaguge and I dont care what you are told. Most people who come from these places have very poor english skills, not matter what they are told. If you want to make a good english speaker and reader and then teach Yiddish as a secondary language, that is fine
September 13, 2017 1:34 pm at 1:34 pm in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1362875zahavasdadParticipantYou just cant “figure out how to write a speech”. People know how well you speak and will many times act on how you speak. Poor English is not a positive trait when trying to speak to an english speaking crowd
September 12, 2017 12:32 pm at 12:32 pm in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1361913zahavasdadParticipantThere are 600,000 jews in France and another 100,000 in Quebec and another 50,000 in belgium. gtranted not all speak french, but probably most of them do. There are not as many Chassidic jews (Sephardic frum jews speak Hebrew, not yiddish)
September 12, 2017 10:13 am at 10:13 am in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1361598zahavasdadParticipantFrench is more useful than Yiddish. Its likely more jews speak French than speak Yiddish (France has the 3rd largest jewish population in the world after Israel and the US) and there is also a large jewish community in Montreal although many of them speak English rather than French
zahavasdadParticipantI am not Chabad , never was chabad and never intended to be Chabad. However I think this bashing of the Rebbe is wrong. He is not the moshiach , but he was still a great leader and did many great things and knew how to speak to people and connect with them
September 11, 2017 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm in reply to: Is hiring a tutor besides paying tuition the new normal? #1361411zahavasdadParticipantAlot of schools are doing this.
zahavasdadParticipantPinchos was allowed to engage in his Zealoty, not because Zimri was involved with Cosbi, but because they did it publically. had they done it in private it would not have been allowed
zahavasdadParticipantIn the “Olden Days” A jew could just leave the community as well and convert to R’L christianity as many did, Including some very famous jews
September 11, 2017 2:24 pm at 2:24 pm in reply to: The Casualties of Yiddish in Litvishe Chadorim #1361069zahavasdadParticipantMost Charedim that I see that arent Old Line Chassidish (Like Satmar or Viznitz types) speak either English or Hebrew among themselves , Im sure some speak Yiddish, Spanish or French (Occasioanlly I see French). It might be these people speak and understand Yiddish, but they dont use it for everyday speaking
zahavasdadParticipantJudaism is not like Catholism in that there is no central authority (Like a Sanhendrin) Its very spread out. The Syrian community is small and very cohesive so they can do things the larger community cannot.
A group like Satmar can throw out someone from Satmar as they are small and cohesive, but they cant throw out someone who is not a Satmar , or who doesnt want to be a satmar.
While you might say there are Gedolim, Many jews do not hold by the Gedolim and mockingly call them ” Supreme Charedi Leaders” Their power and influence and holds to those who follow them, And I stand by my statements until there is a Sanhedrin, you cannot throw someone out from Judaism, they will just go to another group of Jews
zahavasdadParticipantKicking people out is not going to work as many dont care and besides if its the woman who marries a non-jew the children are still jewish, Are we going to write off those Yiddishe Neshamas?
zahavasdadParticipantNobody is advocating converting someone before they marry a jew. The question is AFTER they are married for some time especially if there are children. And some time does not mean they get married and the day after they get married the non-jewish spouse starts conversion. We are talking about enough time (Whatever that might be) where its unlikely the will split (Like if there are children)
zahavasdadParticipantPlease tell us Joseph of all the success stories how you got Jewish Men R’L married to Shiksa’s to leave their wives and goyish children for a torah life
zahavasdadParticipantPeople who run Kiruv events constantly run into people who are not Halachic Jews and while its easy to say to get rid of them, its not so easy in practice.
zahavasdadParticipantActually from what Ive heard from Kiruv people the biggest problems are people who converted Reform or Conservative. At least with Patrilenal jews you can tell them orthodoxy doesnt hold by that (and its still tough many times) but a reform or conservative convert you cant tell them much
zahavasdadParticipantI do not know how they live together, I dont ask these questions. Its not my business (They are open about this and its not a secret).
The Husband is not allowed to get Cohen for an Aliyah and cannot do Bircas Cohanim. The children are not Cohanim
zahavasdadParticipantNeville, She is very religious and the whole family is also quite religious. If you saw them you wouldnt even know the backround. You would think they were hemish people
zahavasdadParticipantI am fairly certain if a person is married to a jew already (Not that they are dating or engaged) but actually married for some time and that person wishes to convert we do not discourage them the same way we would discourage just a person with no direct ties to judaism
zahavasdadParticipantAvi K.
I dont think you are correct about a Cohen marrying a convert. I know such a person . The woman had actually converted Reform and they got married. Later on the woman decided she wanted to become more religious and converted Orthodox. They were not forced to divorce. He is a Passul Cohen and their children are not cohanim. They do not have a Ketubah, but remain married (They are both religous as are their children and grandchildren)
zahavasdadParticipantYou dont try to convince them to leave their spouse, especialy if there are children. You are better off trying to convience the non-jewish partner to convert
September 9, 2017 11:05 pm at 11:05 pm in reply to: The Goyish Principle of “Live and Let Live” #1359335zahavasdadParticipantI hope Joseph you will be correcting the Abusers , Tax cheats and other people who commit such averiahs
September 9, 2017 9:20 pm at 9:20 pm in reply to: The Goyish Principle of “Live and Let Live” #1359289zahavasdadParticipantIf you do not live in a Frum society, It is the best method. Otherwise you can be forced to do things you dont want to like go to church every sunday (This was not so rare in Europe)
September 8, 2017 11:22 am at 11:22 am in reply to: URGENT Hurricane Irma: What happens if your window breaks? #1358958zahavasdadParticipantHouses built in Florida after 1992 were required to have wooden shutters built in and many built before were retro-fitted with the shutters, You can also use plywood instead of the shutters if you dont have them
September 7, 2017 11:28 am at 11:28 am in reply to: Is “half kiruv” worse than the desease? #1357696zahavasdadParticipantI suppose for most non-relgious people looking into orhtodox judaism, at some point there will be a brick wall that cannot be crossed, ive seen it in other discussion areas,
zahavasdadParticipantThere was a Hurricane Hanna in 2008
zahavasdadParticipantThere were a few times We found it humorous , like when it annouced road kill ahead,
But it really does help when you are stuck in traffic and want to know how far the traffic jam is going, Doesnt help when I am in the middle of nowhere, but it does help around the city when I can take shortcuts around it
zahavasdadParticipantWaze tells you about real time traffic and dangers in the road (Like Potholes and shredded tires). a Garman GPS doesnt do that.
I probably use it more for the traffic help than directions.
As far as GPS’s in Israel (I used a regular GPS not Waze) , it would not take me to the territories, it kept telling me to go back via another way. In fact it had me going from Jerusalem to Masada without crossing the Green Line (As opposed to the direct way via Jericho)
zahavasdadParticipantIts like anything else, People lived perfectly fine with Kerosene lamps and outhouses for thousands of years, but I dont think anyone wants to go back to those things
zahavasdadParticipantLF
Its a Machlokes, because certainly some people need that power like hospitals and you can be mechalel shabbos for them
zahavasdadParticipantYou misunderstood
Some of the “successes” claimed by KIruv groups are people who go to a Lunch and Learn once or twice a week and maybe go to shul once a week or so
zahavasdadParticipantLF
The main generators must be on at all times and someone must watch the dashboards and fix any problems immediately , causing a shabbos problem
The portable generators if they shut down, they shut down and use just wait until after shabbos to fix
