I am cutting and pasting this Dvar Torah, word for word

    DVAR TORAH: Shabbos

I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Rabbi Yitzchok Chinn of McKees Port Pensylvania, when he was a guest speaker at a Chofetz Chaim Yeshiva Convention, where he told the following story:

The Rabbi thought perhaps he heard him wrong.

At this point it was beginning to sound awe inspiring. Certainly difficult to see why any of this could cause one to hate Shabbos.

For some people wagging the finger and giving a potch works, for others giving a hug works better.

Instead of forcing them not to text, yelling at them, telling their parents rabbis etc , give them a POSITIVE reason not to text, give them something else to do.

You catch more flies with Honey than vinegar

You want to make Shabbos a positive experience not a negative experience (ie A day of NO) You want them to look forward to Shabbos not dread it.

Shabbos is not supposed to be boring and one should have a need to text to give them something to do. If it is, we’re clearly doing something wrong.

Alot of people do feel this way. Activies that are not “Shabbosdick” are strongly discouraged. While it is admirable to learn all day, Not everyone can do this.

There are plenty of people especially in the summer with the long days who just need some activity.

Is it better to play Basketball , hang out with members of the opposite gender or Text on Shabbos. While it might be admirable to say neither and one should learn, Its just not happening for many (Kids are voting with their actions )

I have seen very few real solutions to help teens pass the time on Shabbos that is both fun and meaningful for most.

In Gan Eden, What did Adom HaRishon do wrong?

He told Chava not to TOUCH the Etz or you will die, when Hashem told him not to EAT the fruit.

The snake pushed Chava against the tree and nothing happend.

“Study: 1 in 5 divorces in the U.S. caused by Facebook

    21 December 2009 @ 01:20 pm EDT

So 80% of divorces were NOT caused by Facebook, they had another cause . This is an example of tricks via statistics. Why not focus on the 80% of divorces that had another cause.

Sort of like 1 in 5 people will die of Cancer, Well 5 of 5 people will die so this actually means nothing.

You have no proof that large amount of people got divorced because of FB, You just “HEARD” that lots of people got divocred because of FB.

Actually proof as opposed to stories or the occasional truth is better to state.

I clicked on the shiur that was given .

The date of the Shiur was January 1, 2008. From a Shiur given on December 31, 2007. On that date very few people had been on FB and I dont think I had even heard of it then (I am fairly techically savy) I did heard of myspace and had an account, but never really used it (Its not as versatile as FB). It was already condemned before most people had even used it.

Marriages get ruined for lots of reasons and its possible to meet people in lots of ways. Many of them KOSHER

I know of someone who hired a nanny and eventually divorced his wife and married the Nanny. People meet others in Shul , Offices , Business trips , other business outings like lunches , meetings etc.

To blame FACEBOOK for failed marriages is just ridiculus and trying to assign blame where it doesnt belong. YES there are marriages that ended because of facebook, but its not any greater than other ways to meet a person. and probably less.

It is frustrating that some want to impose their own agenda in a way not as the Kletzky family wished.

Why not follow the Kletzky’s family wishes and remember Leiby in that way.

There was a statement in the Melechal Shabbos thread about a Rabbi who said kids are being taught that Shabbos is a day of NO. I have seen that statement other places as well.

If everything is NO and forbidden, why would anyone want to be frum.

According to some of the posts I have read here I should give up TV, Movies, Facebook, Pizza, Sushi , Newspapers, Magazines all for Leiby.

While we all want to do something for Leiby. The Yetzer Harah argument is a red Herring, you can use that for almost anything.

For example why not ban CARS because of the Yetzer Harah, People want a NICE car when the money could go to tzedakah. People look at cars totally UNTZNIUS. Sometimes a nice car will get more looks than an untiznut woman.

Lots of things go on in cars that are assur.

People sometimes even drive as leisure because they like to drive totally bittul torah.

The car has a radio with assur music and all sorts of forbidden stuff on it.

I am not trying to ban cars, but if you subsititute Facebook with cars you can pretty much get the same discussion.

IMO the proper way to remember Leiby is to do something that would relate to him perhaps something positive with children (ie give to a childrens charity, learn with a child, take an orphan somewhere special)

If you want to delete your FB account for whatever reason, that is fine and your decision. However I really doubt Leiby had a FB account and probably never heard of it either.

What if you gave a Tzedakah a NON-CASH gift like say a computer would that count?

What if you gave the Tzdekah something of value. for example a man died recently and his sister was a nun and he gave the convent where his sister had lived a Honus Wagner T206 Baseball card, It was in poor condition but fetched $262,000 (This baseball card is the holy grail of baseball cards, In mint condtion its worth in the millions)

What if your volunteered time actually caused the Tzedakah to get more money?

Ie Instead of giving the Tzedakah $54 you vounteered at a chinese auction helping to raise money (Finding volunteers for these events can be harder than you think)

I am not and refuse to be a vegatarian, however when it comes to treatment of animals there is a difference nowadays.

Jews do NOT usually raise animals anymore. Most animals are raised by goyim or chicken farms, The animals are then brought to auction where they are bought by meat packers including kosher packers.

They are then schected and processed according to kashurth.

However from the time are born until the time they are sold, Many times they are mistreated. Chicken Coops are overcrowded and hens peck at each other. Bovine(Cattle) are feed bovine parts when Bovines are herbavores (They eat plants) thats how Mad Cow disease got spread.

In previous generations Jews generally bred and raised their own animals

(I am only referring to the United States, I am not sure what is done in Israel)

I live in NYC area (Lakewood counts as NYC area) but I have been many times “out of town” and it is very different.

When you first realize it, it can be quite shocking.

Just for example Daily Minyanim can be difficult to find (especially MIncha and Maariv) Kosher Items are scarcier (Most national companies have several product runs and the ones in the Northeast are Kosher when runs in the South and West are not). Eating out is unheard of.

Taking off early for Friday can be next to impossible. “Secondary” Jewish Holidays like Sukkoth and Shavouth are unheard of. (Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur Chanukah and Peseach are usually well known)

People who can be frum in such areas should have an extra schar for living there and able to stay frum under such environments

I believe Soros was a survivor.

I am not 100% sure how he got his fortune, but if he did get it betting against the british economy, this is not illegal or unethical. Shorting stocks is many times healthy for a capitialist economy. However many will not engage in this form of trading. Sort of like many will not buy ciggarette stocks or Beer Stocks.
