Given you have already posted things about yourself, I am assuming you are refering to such events.
Are you afraid to call Hatzolah because they will tell the whole neighborhood or are you afraid because all your neighbors will ask ARE YOU OK and WHAT HAPPEND?..Which you are probably not in the mood to answer
Hatzolah people are not allowed to speak to others about a call, now if you are afraid someone you know will answer, I dont have an answer
September 2, 2011 5:05 pm at 5:05 pm in reply to: If you really want to do something and are told no #805040zahavasdadParticipantI read a book (I am not sure if I can metion the title or Author) but it was written by a frum woman
It talks about a Son who refused to wear a Hat and the father forced him to wear the hat , because everyone in that community wore a hat.
The son later went OTD because it became all or nothing. And it all started with a fight over a hat.
I dont know what sport was here, but I am going to assume its a sport that SOME frum girls Play (Like Softball or Basketball) and NOT a sport like Wrestling or Football. And there might be some room especially if the Posek might know more info instead of just a yes or no question.
September 2, 2011 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm in reply to: If you really want to do something and are told no #805037zahavasdadParticipantSometimes a Rov will give 2 different answers to 2 people based on individual circumstances.
One person will feel closer to Yiddishkeit by NOT playing the sport and another will feel ailienated by being forbidden to do so.
September 1, 2011 7:52 pm at 7:52 pm in reply to: can i date a girl without Shadchan????????/ #808659zahavasdadParticipantSo this means according to the Jewish law, I can see a female anywhere, and ask her to marry me ??????????????
Yes, but it doesnt mean she will say YES
September 1, 2011 7:20 pm at 7:20 pm in reply to: can i date a girl without Shadchan????????/ #808644zahavasdadParticipantIf you met someone without a Shadchan and asked a Rov to marry you, Do you think the Rov would object? (Assuming the Rov knew either family)
September 1, 2011 7:18 pm at 7:18 pm in reply to: Life Insurance; A chiyuv, or a lack of Bitachon? #804642zahavasdadParticipantThe newest Health Insurance Policies only cover “Catastrophe’s”
They have like a $5000 deducatable before they will pay anything.
COLLISION Auto Insurance is NOT Mandatory
September 1, 2011 6:59 pm at 6:59 pm in reply to: Life Insurance; A chiyuv, or a lack of Bitachon? #804640zahavasdadParticipantDo you have Health Insurance , Property Insurance, Auto Insurance?
zahavasdadParticipantIn a rest area its not Maris Ayin as everyone knows everyone stops there for the bathroom , Drinks, Souvieners or just a strech
If its a normal McDonalds Maris Ayin Might apply, but if you use the drive-thru then maybe not
zahavasdadParticipantIs there evil in Michangelo?
The reason I picked 1900 aribitrarilt is around 1900 when the impressinist movement ended art so of became a free for all and now there are debates about “what is art”. One cannot seriously debate if Michaelangelo is art
zahavasdadParticipantOnce a Rav brought another rav to meet with the Chofetz Chaim , and the Chofetz Chaim threw the second rav out. As the Chofetz Chaim was not known to act this way. The came back a second time and he threw them out again.
The came back a third time and before he could throw them out, The 2nd rav (The one who was thrown out) asked, Why do you throw me out.
The Chofetz Chaim asked him do you remember Lev Bronstein. The rav answered. YES I do. I had to throw him out of the yeshiva..
The Chofetz Chaim told him that Lev Bronstein was now Leon Trotsky head of the Bolshevik Revolution
zahavasdadParticipantWeprin, I have heard him speak many times. He goes to shul regularly and sends his kids to Yeshiva.
His views are basically similar to mine. People are only voting against him because of him being a democrat and his support for gay marriage
August 22, 2011 9:58 am at 9:58 am in reply to: If Im the ony one to give complete down payment to children… #800737zahavasdadParticipantto clarify its illegal to give anyone more than $10,000 without reporting it to the IRS. You can give someone $1 Million dollars as long as you tell the IRS and they pay income tax on it.
You can give you daughter $10K, You SIL $10K and $10K per grandchild without being subject to the income tax.
As far as OP’s problem, there might be a way to loan the money with every year an amount forgiven say 10% a year for 10 years then after 10 years the loan is forgiven and its likely the marriage is stronger.
August 22, 2011 12:04 am at 12:04 am in reply to: If Im the ony one to give complete down payment to children… #800723zahavasdadParticipantActually putting the house in OP’s name is actually smart, You are NOT allowed to legally give anyone more than $10,000 otherwise they have to pay a Gift tax from the IRS.
If you keep the house in OP’s name and let your children live there for free they dont have to pay the gift tax.
Besides the Bank does not like when parents give large down payments, it a sign of a bad loan
August 21, 2011 1:09 pm at 1:09 pm in reply to: Kohanim not being able to go to exhibits with real dead people. #800201zahavasdadParticipantWhy would someone look for a heter to go to a museum!?
I dont know who here besides me goes to museums, but the Museum of Natural History and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, The Franklin Institute in Philly and the British Museum in in London are truly fascinating .
zahavasdadParticipantDoes anyone really prefer Mayim Chaim (Or Be’er Mayim) Soda to Coke or Pepsi?
zahavasdadParticipantA shot of Liquor a day can help your heart
zahavasdadParticipantDo you follow every shita of Rav Schwab and Rav Kotler?
August 17, 2011 8:28 pm at 8:28 pm in reply to: Teenage girls and older chewing gum on the street #800862zahavasdadParticipantI never understood why the signs are posted in Yiddish, Although I did see a sign on Lee Ave in Both Yiddish AND English
August 17, 2011 8:09 pm at 8:09 pm in reply to: Teenage girls and older chewing gum on the street #800844zahavasdadParticipantWhy not put up a proclamation in Yiddish on 13th Ave
August 17, 2011 7:24 pm at 7:24 pm in reply to: Kohanim not being able to go to exhibits with real dead people. #800187zahavasdadParticipantWhy would anyone want to go see “real dead people”?
Mummies
There is actually a cool exhibit at the Franklin Institute in Philly, there is also a Mummy in the metropolitan museum of Art and there is a mummy collection in the british museum
zahavasdadParticipantWhy does a fireman wear red suspenders?
To hold up his pants
Why does someone wear a bobby pin on his yarmulka?
To keep it attached to his head
zahavasdadParticipantMake sure you dress warm , Bring some snow boots
You can go Ice Skating, Skiing or have a Curling tournament
zahavasdadParticipantPeople always say Dont learn from the Goyim, but I think this is the PERFECT place to learn from the Goyim
Most goyim have simplier weddings and many elope. Only the wealthy have wedding as large as jewish weddings.
zahavasdadParticipantSeriously How is someone with 10 kids 5 and 5 who learns in Kollel all day and a wife who is a teacher at a Bais Yaakov type School supposed to pay $50,000 for a wedding per kid
zahavasdadParticipantActually putting a a logo might be illegal.
You cannot put say a Red Sox or Mets Logo on something without paying the owner for copyright
zahavasdadParticipantAnd if all your daughters friends drove Bently’s does that mean you should get her one too.
Why should anyone spend $50,000 on a wedding that they cant afford and need a 3rd mortgage on a house.
And if you daughter insists on it, then let her pay for it
zahavasdadParticipantWhy does a wedding have to cost so much
Why cant you just have a small affair in a backyard. Maybe get married in a shul and then go to a restaurant. Maybe with some taped music. You can get a restaurant for $30 a plate.
Just because everyone else does it, doesnt mean you should
August 15, 2011 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm in reply to: The Great Debate: Ultra-Orthodoxy vs. Modern Orthodoxy #798632zahavasdadParticipantLanguage is probably the best way to make a separation. You cannot associate with the goyim if you cannot speak to them.
The Satmar hold by this, More and More Yeshivot are teaching in Yiddish as opposed to any other language
August 15, 2011 4:30 pm at 4:30 pm in reply to: The Great Debate: Ultra-Orthodoxy vs. Modern Orthodoxy #798621zahavasdadParticipantI do not advocate seperation, but if you are going to advocate you need to be complete just like the bnei Yisroel in Egypt
They kept their names
They kept their Language
They kept their clothing
Yiddish might be a decendent of old german, but it is a Jewish Language, English cannot claim that and probably more Charadi jews speak english as a main language than any other language. I dont even think many Charedim in the US speak yiddish or hebrew as a second language
August 15, 2011 3:35 pm at 3:35 pm in reply to: Where can one find out who finances a specific organization? #798091zahavasdadParticipantIf you give enough to the federation you can make the board, that is where the real power is (As it is in any organization)
Say someone gave $10 Million dollars, You bet they have a say in where the money goes
August 15, 2011 1:09 pm at 1:09 pm in reply to: The Great Debate: Ultra-Orthodoxy vs. Modern Orthodoxy #798613zahavasdadParticipantLMA you still have not answered how you retify speaking the language of the goyim
One of the reasons the bnei Yisroel deserved to be redeemed in Egypt was not speaking the language of the goyim.
There are many things we can debate on what is integration with goyim, however language is key (as shown in Egpyt).
In fact in many yeshiva language of the goyim is not spoken anymore and learning takes place in yiddish
zahavasdadParticipantShould one learn to drive?
You have to study the traffic laws. There is no torah in that.
Certainly one in NYC does not HAVE to drive, Satmar women dont drive and many gedolim did not learn to drive either
August 15, 2011 2:14 am at 2:14 am in reply to: Where can one find out who finances a specific organization? #798086zahavasdadParticipantThe federation finances this organization , and unless you are giving money to them you have no right to tell them how to spend their money.
If more religious jews would give to them then they would give to those organizations that cater to more religious jews
zahavasdadParticipantThere is no such think as a QUICK DEGREE and online college degrees are not worth the paper they are written on.
zahavasdadParticipantYou dont have to go Monticello, just go to 13th Ave in Borough Park
zahavasdadParticipantLOL
I agree one generally only reads Shakespeare because you are forced to.
I personally am more of a non-fiction historical reader
zahavasdadParticipantShiver me timbers! is not from Shakespeare
zahavasdadParticipantMO people dont go to Talmud Torah’s , They go to Day Schools like Ramaz or Yeshiva of Flatbush
zahavasdadParticipantI belive in Israel people are buried without coffins.
I think its the Law in the US that you must be buried in a coffin
zahavasdadParticipantwhy not buy one on eBay for Israel before you go
August 11, 2011 5:23 pm at 5:23 pm in reply to: The Great Debate: Ultra-Orthodoxy vs. Modern Orthodoxy #798527zahavasdadParticipantI was ready and willing to hear criticism of the Chareidi community.
Can others chime in
Kollel
zahavasdadParticipantPeople dont read shakespeare for “innapropriateness” or innuendo.
Because Shakespeare is in an older form of English, those kinds of things go over most peoples heads anyway. One is not allowed to change Shakespeare (Its considered Heretical) .
Now when on PERFORMS Shakespeare some artistic license is permitted, but the script must remain the same, but again people arent watching Shakespeare being performed for those kinds of things.
One does not read or look at Classics in that way.
zahavasdadParticipantIn a sense Guttenberg saved the talmud
Prior to the invetion of the printing press, Gemorahs and Tanach’s had to hand written. It was difficult to obtain an hand written Gemorahs.
Today everyone can have their own Gemorah for a cheap price (Imagine having to handwrite Baba Basra if you wanted your own copy)
zahavasdadParticipantHow about Sir Issac Newton?
Discoverer of Basic Physics and Calculus (Also discovered by Leibitz)
How about Gallieo Gallei?
Discover of Modern Astronomy
zahavasdadParticipantActually I was just to referring to the book only and not any other issue.
Some have come down harshly on the book, They may not have understood the people reading it are not kollel people. Most of the people reading probably come from reform or unaffilated and this might be their only introduction to orthodoxy.
zahavasdadParticipantJust a comment on the original book
If you go to Amazon and read the reviews, there were quite a few people who said they became more religious after reading the book.
zahavasdadParticipantThere are Minyanim in Albany and Lake George.
The is a price chopper in Albany (I forgot exact address) where they have a good kosher food selection
zahavasdadParticipantMany non-jews cremate to avoid the high cost. Since most jews do not I was referring to the cost of death.
A non-jewish funeral with embalming, Open Casket , High class casket is expensive, but one can avoid this
There is unfortunatly no way to make a cheap jewish funeral (I am assuming one does not want to be buried by the Free Burial society)
zahavasdadParticipantThe caskets are cheaper than non-jews
However you have to rent the funeral home (Or have a gravesite service which is cheaper)
You have to buy the plot , you have to open the grave and you have to seal the grave. You might or might not have to pay a rabbi. You also have to buy a Stone.
Price it out, its about $10,000-$15,000 for a funeral home service and about $8000-$12,000 for a grave site service
zahavasdadParticipantI am not concerned about a Satmar becoming a Zionist. I used those 2 because their opinions are well known and nobody would be shocked
However in seeing recent threads about recent current events here I see certain rabboniom’s psak’s quoted and it might not be a popular psak, there are others who disagree with these psak’s but it doesnt mean the Rav who disagrees is well known. And it might appear to be unfavorable to the Rav quoted especially since this website appears high on google search
