October 17, 2011 11:28 am at 11:28 am in reply to: Are you required to Pay employees for Chol Hamoed? #817745zahavasdadParticipant
While I dont know if the company is open or closed on Xmas, I suspect it might be open. Given who the owners are and where the place is located, I do suspect most of their customers do not celebrate xmas.
My friend does work on Sundays (Its a regular day for them)
I did also try to figure out how many employees this company has, If my friend was the only employee I would be more sympathetic to the employer, but It seems this company has 50 employees or more, It is not a small company.
While having a job is a privilege and not a right, Owning a company is also a priviledge not a right. One should treat your employees the proper way according to general custom. One MUST pay their employees on the books, One should offer benefits and pay that is the customary benefits and pay for a similar position no matter who you work for.
For the record I do get paid for Yom Tov and I get paid for Xmas and I have always been paid for these days. There have been a few times I worked Xmas, but I was paid extra for it.
zahavasdadParticipantYou might want to read about Rav Kook,
zahavasdadParticipantI have this thing to visit all 50 states. Ive made it to 37 of them.
My favorite US national park is Yellowstone not Yosemite, I was not a fan of Yosemite, I also liked the Grand Canyon better than Yosemite.
If you want to visit an exotic place, visit Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island on earth
October 17, 2011 2:20 am at 2:20 am in reply to: Are you required to Pay employees for Chol Hamoed? #817740zahavasdadParticipantIll admit this is what really bothers me
If one worked for a non-jew and he told you that they were closed on xmas, you would expect to be paid and if the non-jew said, I am not paying you for xmas you would be upset. Why should we expect less from a jew when it comes to Yom Tov
zahavasdadParticipantIf someone is not religious and becomes religious, it might be too much of a shock to become Charedi. Its not about Halacha, but rather Hashkafa.
Are you willing to change your mode of dress, are you willing to take chumas for yourself that maybe your shouldnt like Gebrachs, are you willing to seperate from your non-religious family
zahavasdadParticipantYes, you are supposed to use your vacation days for Chol Hamoed, Not to visit the Grand Canyon some other time
That is not a reason to work.
October 16, 2011 2:27 pm at 2:27 pm in reply to: Are you required to Pay employees for Chol Hamoed? #817737zahavasdadParticipantMy friend told me that the boss agreed to pay for Rosh Hashanah when they hired and he backed off when Rosh Hashanah approached and told them they would not be paid(Chol Hamoed was never discussed)
Frankly I have worked for both jews and non-jews and generally except a couple of times, I never had an employee handbook either describing the work envoirment, Benefits were generally sort of informal so I dont begrudge my friend for not getting this in writing and as some have said, they did need a job when this offer came. You do have to be thankful to have a job in this environment.
zahavasdadParticipantIt depends, generally Ive been told the following
If you have vacation days and can use them, then you should not work
If you dont have vacation days and really need the money then you can as this would create a large loss, but should try not to
If you own a business or are in sales and customers will leave your company forever then you can
If you just might lose a few temporary deals then you should not
Ive been told if there is a big loss involved you can work
October 16, 2011 11:55 am at 11:55 am in reply to: Are you required to Pay employees for Chol Hamoed? #817735zahavasdadParticipantThe person is on a W-2 not a 1099
Hourly workers does not mean you are 1099 which is an independent contractor, it means you are paid by the hour (Like $10 an hour ) as opposed to say $400 a week which means you are paid $400 for the week no matter how many hours you work
October 16, 2011 3:24 am at 3:24 am in reply to: Are you required to Pay employees for Chol Hamoed? #817727zahavasdadParticipantThey get paid by the hour
There is no employee handbook.
October 16, 2011 2:08 am at 2:08 am in reply to: Are you required to Pay employees for Chol Hamoed? #817722zahavasdadParticipantMy friend is not union , has no contract and is a Hire at will employee
I did suggest that unemployment suggestion that might be the best idea, they are struggling and it would help them
zahavasdadParticipantBees werent a problem this year
Mosquitoes were. I got totally bitten up by Mosquitoes. I dont think any Wasps came into the Succah
zahavasdadParticipantI have always wondered why christians Halachily are grouped, since they do not all have the same beliefs
For example
There is a group called Unitarians who do NOT belive in the trinity, Would you be allowed to go into a unitarian church (Like you can into a Mosque)
Icons are only in Catholic , Lutheran and Episcopalian (Angilcan) so the others dont have Statues and some of their churches are rather plain
zahavasdadParticipantJews in the US tend to live where the Catholics live not where the Holy Rollers live. I think thats because the Jews Came to the US at the same time as the Irish and Italians did (who are Catholic)
For the most part there arent many jews who live in the Bible Belt.
Many Evangelicals dont consider Mormons to even be chrstian, It is issue with Romney as some quietly in the GOP are saying that (Not a political issue here, just a fact) Rick Perry brought it up
zahavasdadParticipantWhere Jews lived in Europe had everything to do with money, If the King needed the Jewish Money Lending (This was the only profession jews were allowed to do) and Jewish Taxes, they generally were allowed to live.
For every place that kicked out Jews, there were others who begged those same jews to move.
For example when the Jews were kicked out of Spain for “religious” reasons, but they were welcomed in Rome (Right next to the Pope himself)
zahavasdadParticipantEvangelicals are Protestant not Catholics, Some of them think Catholics are the worst thing on earth.
They even fought the 30 years war over it
zahavasdadParticipantKing Edward I owed the jewish money lenders alot of money and didnt have the money to pay them
So he expelled them took their property and cancelled the debts
zahavasdadParticipantI like to look at the different Sukkah’s especially the Han-Made ones (Not the Pre-Fab ones) and see the ingeniuty in people building a Sukkah and all the interesting ways they build them
zahavasdadParticipantI tie the Tarp to the Top PCV , The Bottom PCV and the Poles that stand up straight
zahavasdadParticipantWhen you go to College, Many colleges have a work-study program where they give you a Job on Campus to earn some extra money.
Is this possible in Israel?
Do Yeshiva’s in Israel allow Bochrim a part time job outside the yeshiva , if there are no in Yeshiva jobs available (Is this Legal according to Israeli law)
zahavasdadParticipantI use the PCV pipe and Tarp, I dont have the pully thing though
I can get the Sukkah built in about 2 hours or less
October 12, 2011 2:24 pm at 2:24 pm in reply to: Texting and Internet Ban In Lakewood Yeshiva #817666zahavasdadParticipantI dont normally text. Yesterday I met up with an old friend for the first time in a long time.
He had asked me to text him so I was, When I saw him I remembered why. He is hard of hearing and wears a Hearing Aid while he can hear with it in person, I think he has trouble hearing people on the phone.
Before things are “banned” remember while most probably dont need to text, there are some people who do
zahavasdadParticipantFrom the current weather report, this seems moot, I dont think anyone is going to be in the Succah until Shabbos
zahavasdadParticipantPlease explain the following to me
A Kollel Man has 10 Children 5 Boys and 5 Girls
All are married. He is supporting the 5 Girls families (The boys are supported by their father-in-laws)
Each of the 5 girls (and their husbands) has 5 children each for a total of 25 grandchildren. So he is supporting 37 people (Himself, His wife, his 5 daughters and son-in-laws and 25 grandchildren)
He has to pay 25 yeshiva tuitions at $3000 each (OK this is a low amount)
He also has to pay for 6 Apartments at $1000 a month each (Also a low amount) (His apartment and apartments for his 5 daughters)
And he has to feed 37 mouths…
zahavasdadParticipantIts a done deal, Shalit is being freed
October 11, 2011 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm in reply to: HOT! HURRY! New York To Tel Aviv For Just $631 Round Trip Including Taxes! #825405zahavasdadParticipantWhere do you have to switch Planes?
I hope not Aukland, New Zealand
zahavasdadParticipantIt does amaze me how many people drive to Shul Friday afternoon, park there car there, Walk home and drive back after Shabbos
If you can walk to and from shul Shabbos, you can walk there Friday night
October 11, 2011 7:23 pm at 7:23 pm in reply to: easy dessert recipes for simchas beis hashoava? #816818zahavasdadParticipantDont you like Baked Apples?
October 11, 2011 6:59 pm at 6:59 pm in reply to: easy dessert recipes for simchas beis hashoava? #816816zahavasdadParticipantApples
Dump a few apples in the over and bake, maybe put some cinnamon on them
zahavasdadParticipantIn Disney World, Certain restaurants there serve Kosher food, Its Airline food double wrapped and you have to ask for it.
In Animal Kingdom its Pizza, Its double wrapped Airline food Pizza.
Its Frozen (Not Fresh Pizza) and the workers there just heat it up for you
Could it be thats what is served here?
zahavasdadParticipantPlease re-read what I wrote
DOES have a valid Hasghcha
If the Hasshcha isnt good then dont eat there, I am only referring to IF the Hashchaha is good
zahavasdadParticipantDr Seuess what would you do if you were OP and the other driver was dressed straight out of “Northern Manhattan” with a vehicle straight out of “Northern Manhattan” and didnt look like he was too happy.
zahavasdadParticipantYellow Jacket Wasps do not Die when they Sting you unlike a Bee
zahavasdadParticipantI think most could agree that spending Shabbos at Rikers Island is a Sakana Nefashos.
zahavasdadParticipantThey are not bees, they are Wasps (Yellow Jackets). At least thats what I get
zahavasdadParticipantJMO
If the store IS owned by Non-Jews , DOES have a valid Hasghcha and it opened on Shabbos
You should NOT be convincing people not to go there, it is a terrible Chillul Hashem if you do. The owners are trying to reach out to the jewish community and want your business.
If you personally dont want to go there that is fine, but do not make a public issue
zahavasdadParticipantI read about a case in Brooklyn recently. A man broke some minor offense (Like Jaywalking or something) on Shabbos and the cop insisted on giving him a ticket
As it was Shabbos he had no ID and the cop followed him home where his drivers license was. The cop gave him the ticket and made him sign it (You have to sign tickets to acknowlege receving them)
zahavasdadParticipantIf you leave, you could be liable for hit and run and go to Jail which is considered a Sakana.
I am assuming the other party was either not jewish or not religious and not in the mood to accomodate you.
The police need to be there to help determine fault
zahavasdadParticipantYou cant put an iPad in your pocket and YOU CAN get 3G for a Netbook. They make a USB card for that.
I am more up to date than you think, its my job to know whats going on.
I dont have an iPhone either a(I dont own any Apple products) , but I do have an Android phone and the internet does work anywhere
zahavasdadParticipantzdad-thats a treif hashkafa. we dont appease people to keep tabs on them. if theyre bad al pi torah theyre gone. thats it. fait accompli.
One I said it was my own theory, but lets say you throw him out and then his new organization becomes his seat of power, he then can do ALOT more damage. While a member of the RCA he cannot split the organization and he must obey their rules. Once he leaves he can take shuls with him and make his own rules.
The Rabbi Marc Angel theory I can belive, thats who is really protecting him. They both founded the IRF (Which Ive never heard of until yesterday) and I saw the website.
It easy to say throw him out, but you have to accept the consequences. Do you really think he would go quietly?
zahavasdadParticipantHave you ever seen a Netbook?
They are quite portable and easily hid
zahavasdadParticipantI have no more insight here than anyone else except that he has no influence in my neighborhood (Which frankly isnt exactly a MO neighborhood).
I can only guess (This is MY THEORY not discussed with anyone else) the only reason Avi Weiss has not already been kicked out of the RCA is because some feel the damage might be greater.
By keeping him him, they can put at least some checks on him , if they kick him out he becomes a Martyr and makes his own organization stronger and then there is no way to stop him
He DID back off from the Rabbah due to pressure from the RCA, if he is on his own he would not have to back off and could ordain as many Rabbah as his likes, Being part of the RCA they can pressure him to stop some of his other “innovations” but on his own they cant.
zahavasdadParticipantAnd what is the difference between an iPad and a Laptop with internet access?
And that is the reason I actually DONT own an ipad (or any other Apple product)
I am in the computer field and I cant tell you the difference between an iPad and a laptop with internet access (Other than style)
zahavasdadParticipantAnd what is the difference between an iPad and a Laptop with internet access?
zahavasdadParticipantFeif: The danger of chareidim following NK off the cliff is infinitesimal compared to the danger of MO following Avi Weiss.
Except MO are not following Avi Weiss,
How many Young Israels or O-U affiliated Synangouges have a YCT graduate as Rabbi (as opposed to Y-U)
zahavasdadParticipantI wonder if half the people who condem i-products even know what they really do
An iPod Plays AUDIO, its no different than a WALKMAN or a Cassette player
An iPhone is a small COMPUTER, it basically does the same thing as your computer abit on a smaller level
An iPad is a larger iPhone with a 10 inch LCD instead of a 2 inch LCD.
NONE of them are really new items, just different versions of stuff you already have
zahavasdadParticipantDunkin Donuts is really a restaurant, besides Donuts they make EGGS and Hash Browns that they cook on demand
zahavasdadParticipantYCT only represents themselves. In the article it mentions a new rabbinical organization.
Guess who is in charge of it. Rabbi Avi Weiss.
YU is the main trainer for MO rabbis and that is very unlikely to change
zahavasdadParticipantOne can return from a “spiritual death” one cannot return from an actual death
zahavasdadParticipantya i would be too. why is the rca having such a hard time? he doesnt really address why its so terrible if the RCA denounces these people. personally i think theyre wackos but i guess in a world of crazies…
How many Charedi Rabbis denounce Neteuri Karta??
