While I dont know if the company is open or closed on Xmas, I suspect it might be open. Given who the owners are and where the place is located, I do suspect most of their customers do not celebrate xmas.

My friend does work on Sundays (Its a regular day for them)

I did also try to figure out how many employees this company has, If my friend was the only employee I would be more sympathetic to the employer, but It seems this company has 50 employees or more, It is not a small company.

While having a job is a privilege and not a right, Owning a company is also a priviledge not a right. One should treat your employees the proper way according to general custom. One MUST pay their employees on the books, One should offer benefits and pay that is the customary benefits and pay for a similar position no matter who you work for.

For the record I do get paid for Yom Tov and I get paid for Xmas and I have always been paid for these days. There have been a few times I worked Xmas, but I was paid extra for it.

I have this thing to visit all 50 states. Ive made it to 37 of them.

My favorite US national park is Yellowstone not Yosemite, I was not a fan of Yosemite, I also liked the Grand Canyon better than Yosemite.

If you want to visit an exotic place, visit Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island on earth

Ill admit this is what really bothers me

If one worked for a non-jew and he told you that they were closed on xmas, you would expect to be paid and if the non-jew said, I am not paying you for xmas you would be upset. Why should we expect less from a jew when it comes to Yom Tov

If someone is not religious and becomes religious, it might be too much of a shock to become Charedi. Its not about Halacha, but rather Hashkafa.

Are you willing to change your mode of dress, are you willing to take chumas for yourself that maybe your shouldnt like Gebrachs, are you willing to seperate from your non-religious family

Yes, you are supposed to use your vacation days for Chol Hamoed, Not to visit the Grand Canyon some other time

That is not a reason to work.

My friend told me that the boss agreed to pay for Rosh Hashanah when they hired and he backed off when Rosh Hashanah approached and told them they would not be paid(Chol Hamoed was never discussed)

Frankly I have worked for both jews and non-jews and generally except a couple of times, I never had an employee handbook either describing the work envoirment, Benefits were generally sort of informal so I dont begrudge my friend for not getting this in writing and as some have said, they did need a job when this offer came. You do have to be thankful to have a job in this environment.

It depends, generally Ive been told the following

If you have vacation days and can use them, then you should not work

If you dont have vacation days and really need the money then you can as this would create a large loss, but should try not to

If you own a business or are in sales and customers will leave your company forever then you can

If you just might lose a few temporary deals then you should not

Ive been told if there is a big loss involved you can work

    The person is on a W-2 not a 1099

Hourly workers does not mean you are 1099 which is an independent contractor, it means you are paid by the hour (Like $10 an hour ) as opposed to say $400 a week which means you are paid $400 for the week no matter how many hours you work

I have always wondered why christians Halachily are grouped, since they do not all have the same beliefs

    For example

There is a group called Unitarians who do NOT belive in the trinity, Would you be allowed to go into a unitarian church (Like you can into a Mosque)

Icons are only in Catholic , Lutheran and Episcopalian (Angilcan) so the others dont have Statues and some of their churches are rather plain

Jews in the US tend to live where the Catholics live not where the Holy Rollers live. I think thats because the Jews Came to the US at the same time as the Irish and Italians did (who are Catholic)

For the most part there arent many jews who live in the Bible Belt.

Many Evangelicals dont consider Mormons to even be chrstian, It is issue with Romney as some quietly in the GOP are saying that (Not a political issue here, just a fact) Rick Perry brought it up

Where Jews lived in Europe had everything to do with money, If the King needed the Jewish Money Lending (This was the only profession jews were allowed to do) and Jewish Taxes, they generally were allowed to live.

For every place that kicked out Jews, there were others who begged those same jews to move.

For example when the Jews were kicked out of Spain for “religious” reasons, but they were welcomed in Rome (Right next to the Pope himself)

When you go to College, Many colleges have a work-study program where they give you a Job on Campus to earn some extra money.

    Is this possible in Israel?

Do Yeshiva’s in Israel allow Bochrim a part time job outside the yeshiva , if there are no in Yeshiva jobs available (Is this Legal according to Israeli law)

I dont normally text. Yesterday I met up with an old friend for the first time in a long time.

He had asked me to text him so I was, When I saw him I remembered why. He is hard of hearing and wears a Hearing Aid while he can hear with it in person, I think he has trouble hearing people on the phone.

Before things are “banned” remember while most probably dont need to text, there are some people who do

Please explain the following to me

A Kollel Man has 10 Children 5 Boys and 5 Girls

All are married. He is supporting the 5 Girls families (The boys are supported by their father-in-laws)

Each of the 5 girls (and their husbands) has 5 children each for a total of 25 grandchildren. So he is supporting 37 people (Himself, His wife, his 5 daughters and son-in-laws and 25 grandchildren)

He has to pay 25 yeshiva tuitions at $3000 each (OK this is a low amount)

He also has to pay for 6 Apartments at $1000 a month each (Also a low amount) (His apartment and apartments for his 5 daughters)

And he has to feed 37 mouths…

    JMO

If the store IS owned by Non-Jews , DOES have a valid Hasghcha and it opened on Shabbos

You should NOT be convincing people not to go there, it is a terrible Chillul Hashem if you do. The owners are trying to reach out to the jewish community and want your business.

If you personally dont want to go there that is fine, but do not make a public issue

I read about a case in Brooklyn recently. A man broke some minor offense (Like Jaywalking or something) on Shabbos and the cop insisted on giving him a ticket

As it was Shabbos he had no ID and the cop followed him home where his drivers license was. The cop gave him the ticket and made him sign it (You have to sign tickets to acknowlege receving them)

zdad-thats a treif hashkafa. we dont appease people to keep tabs on them. if theyre bad al pi torah theyre gone. thats it. fait accompli.

One I said it was my own theory, but lets say you throw him out and then his new organization becomes his seat of power, he then can do ALOT more damage. While a member of the RCA he cannot split the organization and he must obey their rules. Once he leaves he can take shuls with him and make his own rules.

The Rabbi Marc Angel theory I can belive, thats who is really protecting him. They both founded the IRF (Which Ive never heard of until yesterday) and I saw the website.

It easy to say throw him out, but you have to accept the consequences. Do you really think he would go quietly?

I have no more insight here than anyone else except that he has no influence in my neighborhood (Which frankly isnt exactly a MO neighborhood).

I can only guess (This is MY THEORY not discussed with anyone else) the only reason Avi Weiss has not already been kicked out of the RCA is because some feel the damage might be greater.

By keeping him him, they can put at least some checks on him , if they kick him out he becomes a Martyr and makes his own organization stronger and then there is no way to stop him

He DID back off from the Rabbah due to pressure from the RCA, if he is on his own he would not have to back off and could ordain as many Rabbah as his likes, Being part of the RCA they can pressure him to stop some of his other “innovations” but on his own they cant.
