If the bus goes private they are not allowed to pick up off the street.

It is illegal for anyone to pick up anyone off the street unless you are a yellow cab, City Bus. Licensed private van (mostly in Southeast queens) or if the city grants you a franchise to pick up.

There was a program called “Scared Straight” in the program, they took at-risk teens (Not jewish) who were trouble makers and brought them to prison to see what life was life there and see how bad it really was there.

While some teens were “scared straight” others were not and one of the original teens who was in the program, committed a crime and got 25 to life.

You did not eat shark, Tuna nets do not catch Sharks.

The DO catch Dolphins as Dolphins swim with Tuna (Sharks do not)

and this was a problem, however somehow they have made the nets to catch the Tuna but not the Dolphins (Dolphins and Tuna’s are similar sizes)

gavra: To become a baal or baalus teshuva, the person needs to leave the non-Jew they “married”. That can’t be compromised.

And what about the kids (if they have some)

Should they abandon the kids (if the kids are not halachily jewish)

Story of Rav Pam. Ive seen this story several places

<em > This Monday, October 31, is Halloween. The following inspiring story from Rabbi Akiva Males of Harrisburg, PA, demonstrates that if we are to be light unto the nations, then the nations must have a positive opinion of us. The behavior of Rav Pam and his wife, Rebbetzin Sarah, was because they clearly understood this.

    Rabbi Males related:

I think the bus is great even if I dont go to willi often, I use it locally very often for only $1! Its a great price and usually a pleasant ride.

I don’r know why so many posters who claim not even to live in the NY area have such important opinions on this thread topic.

The cost of the bus is $2.50 not $1. A “local” would know that

As one who has usually worked in the regular world. I am frequently asked questions about jewish life especially when stuff his the news.

How is it “Kiddush Hashem” when a African American co-worker asked me How come you jews send your women to the back of the bus just like in the Jim Crow South?

Its one thing to turn off your porch lights and front room lights and pretend not to be home.

Its quite another to tell some little kids one dressed as Cinderella, another dressed as superman and another dressed as a Power Ranger “Sorry I dont have candy for you, I dont celebrate this goyish pagan holiday”

These buses ARE listed on the Bus Signs.

B110 is an official route number

Anyone can take them, you dont have to be Chasidic or even be Jewish to take them (Sometimes non-jews take these buses)

You CANNOT operate your own bus line in the city without a license.

They are strictly regulated , One of the reasons is because you compete with the city buses.

But there are safety issues as well like making sure the vehicle has liability insurance and is properly maintained (Ever take a Gypsy Cab, You take your life into your own hands).

You are not even allowed to pick up passengers off the street without a permit (Cabs who do this that arent medallions are breaking the law)

For those who favor it I have a question

In the USA Back of the Bus has a very bad connotation , Since its a Chumra and not a Halacha according to most (if not all) Ive never heard of a Rav who forbided riding the regular bus or Subway (Even Satmar ride the Subway) Its probably a Chilul Hashem

    How can this be permitted

I think legally its not private, but rather semi-private.

The difference is things like who to pick up, I dont think they have the right to refuse to pick up people (ie women dressed un-tzniut), but they do have the right to do things like not work on Shabbos or not accept a metro-card

There is a book by Hanoch Teller about Reb Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and he tells of an incident where the Rav was at an affair with mixed seating and someone asked him why he was at this event.

After the event The Rav gave the person a sharp lesson in Derech Eretz

I was in London 12 years ago and I saw the Shul had a guard 24/7 .

When I was in Rome this summer, You could not attend services at the Shul unless you told them in advance .

My inlaws have shown me pictures of other shuls in Europe and its pretty much the same, Most shuls in Europe have guards, I saw one in Stockholm with a Jersey Barrier in front. Some you had to tell them in advance that you were going.

We are spoiled here in the US

Just because one Rav is greater than another doesnt mean you have to follow them.

One can say the Satmar Rebbe was one of the greatest gedolim of his time, but it doesnt mean you are required to follow his shitas.

You can say the Satmar Rebbe was a Godol and be a zionist

Out of curiosity, which is worse: secular college or YU?

I went to secular college and it was cheap so I have no debt, YU costs $20K-$30K a year so IMO YU . It is possible in NYC to attend a seder while attending some of the secular colleges especially the public colleges like Hunter, Queens and Brooklyn

I am not 100% sure here, but I think some of the servers at Masbia as paid, While there are some volunteers it seems thats it tough to get full time volunteers to serve the food at Masbia.

The Soup kitchens are almost all volunteers and all donations can go to help the hungry eat.

I did a quick wikipedia on Rav Bezalel Rakow and it said he was upset with R Sacks saying that jews cannot learn things from other religions.

The Soup Kitchen is not really a jewish idea and we did not really have them until recently until Masbia came around. While Food Charities like Tomche Shabbos have been around, the place where they make the food for you and serve you like Masbia has not really.

Wikipedia is not considered the best source for anything.

It is user modified meaning anyone can modify any entry the please.

While popular entries are harder to “Graffittize” like say Barack Obama, a less popular entry can easily be “Graffitize”

Instead of Personal Shopper, have you thought about being a Buyer. Most companies have a department whose job it is to buy stuff. Stores like Macys, Bloomingdales have people whose job it is to buy clothes (in wholesale) Toys R Us has people whose job it is to buy toys.

Its possible the “Lost tribes” in the new world are actually conversos (Jews who were forced to convert to christianity in Spain)

And these people are decendents of such people except over time the marrano idea has been lost.

They are not the lost tribes of Dan, but rather the lost tribes of “Sepharad”
