zahavasdadParticipant
Truthfully this thread bothered me, especially with what happend at Penn State
Without going into details but a coach walked in on someone doing the wrong thing.
If you walk in on someone doing the wrong thing, you should have to ask a Rov what to do?
If I walked in on someone doing the wrong thing, I would try to stop it of at least call the Police.
If you walked in on someone, Would you call your rav or call the police?
I also asked my rov about it and he said more and more poskim are agreeing that its not being a Moiser turning in such people.
zahavasdadParticipantWho says the Halacha says you are not supposed to report an abuser to the police?
I am sure there are some who say you are supposed to ask a rav first, but there are other who say you CAN report to the police and get the abuser out of the community.
zahavasdadParticipantSometimes when you stop and ask for directions, you find the wrong person who either gives you the wrong directions , or gives you incomprehensible directions.
zahavasdadParticipantWhen someone has questions, you need to be careful not only what you answer , but how you answer. A sharp tounge may not necessarily be the best way to answer a “nudnick”
zahavasdadParticipantI happen to have a degree in Computer Science AND I also happen to have a degree in “Narashkeit” History.
At the time there was only a choice to do the history in European , World or American History (Now you can specialize in Jewish History as well) and I specialized in American History.
There is no apikorsis in the American Civil War (I had to write a term paper on an aspect of the American Civil War and J.P. Morgan)
There is no apikorsis in learning about World War I and World War II (From an american point of view).
And if you want to say it was useless, I also majored in Computer Science where I mostly programmed in PASCAL, Knowing Pascal is about as useful in life as knowing about the American Civil War
zahavasdadParticipantlimud chol is limud treif
Exactly what is “Treif” about Calculus or other advanced Mathematics?
zahavasdadParticipantHave you discussed which college??
If YU/Stern is out Brooklyn and Queens College have large orthodox populations in them
zahavasdadParticipantThere is website shamash that has kosher restaurants everywhere
There is also a website jewisheurope that ive used for information in Europe

zahavasdadParticipantThere was a Pro-Palestianian rally in Washington DC on Shabbos April 20,2002
Neuteri Karta was there
Obviously being at a pro-palestinian rally was more important than shabbos
zahavasdadParticipantWhat IS the point?
I saw a dvar torah from someone quoted on this website Project (something) I forgot the rest
He said he was in Jerusalem and a chiloni saw he was a charedi and wanted to ask him a question, and he agreed, he wanted to know why charedim throw stones, He was an american so he wasnt totally on top of this. He was upset by the question
Later he saw a woman talking on a cell phone (on Shabbos) and when she saw him , she asked him if he was ANGRY, he said not angry but sad.
He said he NEVER heard of anyone who became religious because they had stones thrown at them, Nobody became religious because someone cursed at them
zahavasdadParticipantGetting your heartbroken isnt the worst thing in the world, you get over it.
Its a part of growing up
zahavasdadParticipantI didnt say the christian wrote the torah, he said he gave you the torah, like for example a priest found a torah after the Nazi’s deported the entire town and kept it until after the war. After the war he gave it back to survivors
The torah was Kosher (or was kosher at one time)
zahavasdadParticipantWhen someone gives you a gift, Its proper to accept it.
Imagine someone gave you a Sefer Torah , but it was delivered to you by a priest. Would you refuse it because the priest gave it to you?
Now imagine that gift is from Hashem, would you also refuse it no matter who delivered it to you?
zahavasdadParticipantI think the website was hacked with a denial of service hacking.
zahavasdadParticipantTodays Rome is not the same as the Roman Empire, that Rome ceased to exist in the 500’s or so. The population was wiped out from war neglect and the Plague (especially the Plague of Justinian)
Most likely the current residents of Rome are decendents from Germanic Barbaric tribes
zahavasdadParticipantIf you google “true torah Jews” the Neuteri Karta website comes up
zahavasdadParticipantIsnt Imagine about atheism?
zahavasdadParticipantBesides everything in Israel, there is Ben Yehuda Street and even if your daughter never heard of it now, she WILL find out about it when she gets there

If one person eats Chazar doesnt mean everyone should be eating it
November 4, 2011 6:06 pm at 6:06 pm in reply to: vehicles with Hatzala permits not moving during alternate parking #824994zahavasdadParticipantWhen parking permits are abused too much, they can be taken away for everyone.
November 4, 2011 2:23 pm at 2:23 pm in reply to: Should BMG Have A Say In Lakewood Politics? #824101zahavasdadParticipantThere is a difference between endorsing candidates and asking for things that your community needs.
While its illegal for BMG to endorse a candidate, its perfectly legal for them to lobby for say tax credits for yeshiva tuition
November 4, 2011 11:31 am at 11:31 am in reply to: Should BMG Have A Say In Lakewood Politics? #824099zahavasdadParticipantBMG is not legally allowed to endorse any candidate unless they want to lose their tax exempt status.
In fact not religious institution of any kind is allowed to endorse candidates otherwise they can lose this benefit.
While a Rabbi at his own personal table can say he supports such and such candidate, he cannot say so on the pulpit.
If Rav Kotler wishes to endorse a candidate, he may do so as Rabbi Malkiel Kotler, a rabbi in the Lakewood community, but he cannot do so as Rosh Yeshiva or BMG and cannot do it on the pulpit and certainly not during a shabbos drasha
November 4, 2011 1:44 am at 1:44 am in reply to: Rain within 3 hours after 1sr prayer of year for rain #824156zahavasdadParticipantWe had 20 inches of rain in August and It rained almost the entire succos.
Basically it hasnt stopped raining
I am sick of rain…..
zahavasdadParticipantNot meaning to change the topic, but another difficult question is how to interact at work with Jews married to non-Jews. Some also have children who are not Jewish, but are brought up to believe they are.
IMO you dont say a word especially when you are not asked for your opinion, and if you are asked, its best to Dodge the question, Sometimes its best to know your place, I do not think you are required to divulge that information (unless of course it might lead to something else like that person is marrying a jew)
zahavasdadParticipantHave you ever been to Gateshead?
I might suggest visting the community and staying with them for a few weeks to see if the community is right for you.
You will need to stay with a family and not at a hotel to really get the feeling. You can also maybe ask the locals about the seminaries there as well.
zahavasdadParticipantMG and MP, I was not referring to people who live out of town and want to be frum.
I was referring to people who move out of town to divorce themselves from anything jewish.
If you are going OTD and stay near your friends , family etc even if you go, you still have some pull back, but if you totally divorce yourself from your friends and family and anything jewish (even running into a Hasid on the Subway) you are probably gone forever
zahavasdadParticipantUniversities have guest lectures, trips and other programs
Why cant yeshivas have guest Maggid Shiurs, perhaps trip to Israel or kevarim of Gedolim in Israel (Like the Brezlov to Uman)
You can raise money and get people involved in the yeshiva
zahavasdadParticipantI had a co-worker who was in Israel over Succoh and she said , she was dressed ok, but up to certain standards (She was wearing Sandles)
A man with 2 children came up to her and cursed her , her husband was angry, but she thought it was funny
zahavasdadParticipantAny Alumni Association wants to know about their Alumni , thats how you get a fundraiser list
The lists are also rented and sold to also raise funds, so if you get a solicitation from a place you never heard of, its likely your name was rented from somewhere that you are involved with
zahavasdadParticipantI think what needs to be done is copy from colleges. Colleges and universities know how to network among their alumni.
They have people whose sole job it is to keep track of Alumni. They invite the alumni to events and solicit donations from them.
One differnce though. I dont know why this is, but in the academic world, they try to solicit for the endowment. Very few yeshivas have endowments or try to solicit for one.
In a university a chair is endowed for example. One person donates enough money so the salary of a professor can teach a course.
I dont know why in yeshiva, a person could be endowed to learn all day
zahavasdadParticipantHe is reminding people to dress tzniut
If you dont voluntarily cover up, I will force you to cover up
zahavasdadParticipantI know there are communities down south. I dont mean people who move to places like Atlanta, or South Florida , places that have jewish communities
I mean people who move to places where the locals have never seen a jew and think they all have horns.
zahavasdadParticipantPeople who cut themselves off from the jewish community
Not only do they not keep shabbos, kosher etc, They marry non-jews and move to places where there arent any jews or very few of them.
Many people who ive met that are “OTD” want some connection to judaism so there is hope for them, but then there are others who seem to totally cut themselves off , its much harder to do teshuva when you move outside NY (especially down south) marry a non-jew and have kids
zahavasdadParticipantIf you want to monitor Cell phone usage, the best way is Pay as you go.
Kids will figure out ways to beat any filtering system, but there is no way (Short of adding more money) for kids to unlimited text or make cell phones unless there is money on the phone.
zahavasdadParticipantWhile we are reminding people about the Arba Misois. We should also remind people of Tsoras and the terrible punishment that is it.
October 30, 2011 2:44 pm at 2:44 pm in reply to: Nasi Project has a new approach, I hear. Is this a nasty rumor? #823948zahavasdadParticipantIn the non-charedi or non-jewish world people pay for dates all the time
Its usually called things like match.com ,jdate or eharmony or there are professional dating services like its just lunch where there charge hefty fees.
BUT these places claim to weed out people. If you are going to pay $15K for a match, what are you getting for $15K. Are you getting the Rosh Hayeshiva , his son or prized Talmid or are you getting a schlumper who cant learn and cant hold a job down and the only reason you were set up with him is because he is single and the proper age.
zahavasdadParticipantThe other religion belives that you burn for eternity, in judaism you dont stay in gehenim for more than 11 months unless you are a true Rasha (Then its 12 months)
I am not sure if Burning is part of jewish theology (frankly I dont know exactly what Judaism says the punishment in Gehenom is)
zahavasdadParticipantAny phone that works on AT&T or T-Mobile networks (GSM) unlocked will work in Israel
October 28, 2011 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm in reply to: My $21000 sacrifice to get my daughter out of her misery #822130zahavasdadParticipantI know you dont get to keep all your credits, but you do keep some. But even if you lost ALL
In OP’s case $10,500 would be lost not $21K
October 28, 2011 3:51 pm at 3:51 pm in reply to: My $21000 sacrifice to get my daughter out of her misery #822128zahavasdadParticipantWhen you go to secular college, It goes by semesters. There are usually 2 semesters in a school year so lets say you go to a college and its not for you at the end of the school year (Usually December and May) you can leave
In the example the parent would only have been out $10,500K and not $21K
zahavasdadParticipantI never heard of the texting thing until it was posted here and a read up further and it seems teens were doing it because they were bored and isolated on Shabbos
Here is an idea instead of threatening them with stonning, how about showing them the beauty of shabbos (and others)
If you are a parent do you always threaten your children with punishment no matter how small the infraction, dont you try rewarding them if you do the right thing?
zahavasdadParticipantThe only way I could see that they could do this legally is a call up service
The bus does NOT pick up passengers off the street, HOWEVER if you had to call the bus to pick you up (Like you might call a taxi) then it might be legal. Then you can sort of make sure that only people you want will be picked up
zahavasdadParticipantActually I think Beis Din would almost always look for a way NOT to execute someone
zahavasdadParticipantThere is no appearance of discrimination if front/back either.
Google Rosa Parks

October 27, 2011 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm in reply to: My $21000 sacrifice to get my daughter out of her misery #822103zahavasdadParticipantIn my Senior year of High School we WERE pressured to go to Israel for a year. Basically they would not accept any other place.
I knew I wasnt ready to go away I went to a local college (I wasnt ready to go away for college either).
Most people I know who went had the best time of their lives , but I know a few who did not. It really needs to be done on an individual basis
October 27, 2011 8:41 pm at 8:41 pm in reply to: Do Online Halachic Discussions Cause Some to be Nichshal in Aveiros? #868033zahavasdadParticipantYou dont want to censor recipes
There are plenty of recipes Id Like to censor.
I personally cant stand schmaltz Herring

zahavasdadParticipantIve bought 2 new cars, the first one I had for 12.5 years and my current car for almost 10 years.
If you intended to keep them, buying is cheaper if you want a new car every few years leasing is cheaper
