In the Garden of Eden , Adom Harishon told chava, not to TOUCH the tree, which is not what Hashem said, making a chumra and when the snake pushed Chava against the tree nothing happened.

Chazal have said that Adom’s aveirah was making chumras where it doesnt belong.

Today Chumras are being made where they dont belong and can actually be more harmful than good

I heard from RABBIS that such chumras as

    Women Cant Drive

    Women Cant Vote

Photoshoping of Women including world leaders out of photos

Women in the back of the bus

    Are more HARMFUL than good

And if you dont belive me, google Yossi Sarid who posted a piece in Haaretz saying Othodox judaism treats women worse than dogs.

And the Sikirim are jsut following chumras, but some of the are probably mentally ill and dont know the difference between chumra and Halacha they have gone overboard

Seems like some have had time to issue directives to ban Mishpacha, College and going into the army

But no time to issue for other issues

He has seen this activity for months and most people in the shul knew about it (I wasnt so friendly with them , so I didnt know)

I have heard from more than one Rav that some Charedi Rabbis do not know how to get a message out. Their message might be clear to a follower of that particular Rav, but means something else to everyone else.

Someone might ask a Rav a Shaliah and the Rav will answer with a Posuk assuming the questionaire understands the answer.

Someone might ask a Rav a Shaliah and he will answer with a Riddle that a follower would totally get, but a not follower would not get.

A Rav might give a statement in a letter written weeks after event.

This is how things were classically done. I dont think some gedolim understand this system doesnt always work

When the world changed from the Jullian Calander to the Gregorian Calender, 11 days were skipped

In most of Western Europe The Day After March 10,1582 was March 21, 1582

In England the and US Colonies September 2, 1752 was followed by Sepetember 14, 1752

And in Russia Janauary 31, 1918 was Followed by February 14, 1918

I think the Gedolim like Rav Elyshiv , Rav Kanivesky and the Chassdic Rebbes should go there and condem the violence without expection.

I like this idea. It will never happen, but it is a good idea

And thats part of the Problem.

Ive read many reports of the incidents , One thing that I do think is an issue is Charedi rabbis seem unable to stop the Sicarim. Charedi Followers who dont agree with them (Who might the majority) run scared. and unable to stop them

By they silence it seems they agree with them even if they dont

Actually if a RELIGIOUS jew knew about the history of Chanukah, they would want to abolish it

The Hashmoneon Disobyed the Rabbis because they wanted to become kings

The LOVED Rome and made a treaty with them (This treaty was the real reason they won) and if you read the Megilah of the Maccabees they PRAISE Rome

Actually the treaty allowed Rome to make Judea a province of Rome

the Aguda has not properly condemed these acts, I saw the statement and they blame the victims.

If this didnt involve charedim and someone was stalking out 8 year old girls, They would be called pedaphiles.

In fact one of the protesters said he was concerened about being led on by an 8 year old. he is a pedaphile.

I would accept internet bashing from my relatives because they dont have it except they would not bash the internet in front of me because they know I make my parnassah from it.

And for those who condemn me for not listening to the gedolim on this, you are on the internet too.

Most of my Charedi relatives are not on the internet, EXCEPT MAYBE e-mail (If they need it) not YWN, Not The Shumz, not ANYTHING

No I just agreed with ravshalom that the Gedolim in the US see things differently than the ones in EY.

But I am not sure the ones in EY will see it any differently any time soon.

I dont think the ones in Israel want any part of the non-charedi world and want to force their adherents to be totally seperate, and not just about the internet. They even ban speaking English which of course is impossible in the US. You cant really use the internet properly without speaking english (Most of the internet is in English – Of course there are other languages represented ) But English Dominates

I think the communities in E’Y are more isolated than those elsewhere ESPECIALLY New york City

As isolated as Borough park is, Its STILL NYC, The buses that run on 13th Ave have NYC ads. If you Ride the Subway on new Utrecht you will meet all kinds of people.

Williamsburg besides being a Chassidic community is also a Hipster community with the BQE running down the middle

Even lakewood is only about 50% jewish so living and dealing with Non-Jews is common

HOWEVER in Israel its very different other than Meir Sharim seeing tourist who want to see that community it is isolated

Its more So for Beit Shemesh or Bnei Brak, outsiders dont really go there as much.

This is why I think these things are all happening in Israel more than the US, The People in Israel dont understand and dont need to understand.

I have not been to Gateshead, but I have been to London (Golders Green) and Ive been to Paris and Italy and I can tell you I am confused about Kashruth , I am not even sure about Chalov Yisroel in Europe. I do know how far Gateshead is from London (About 400 miles)

Since I am not sure about Kashruth (and Ill assume the girl did not either) I only buy from the jewish stores and I doubt she ever heard of Tesco or knew where it was (If you’ve never been somewhere, the store could be a block away and you wouldnt know it, and even if you did, What could you buy there) Kashruth in Europe is different. Until someone tells you what you can eat, you sort of have to wait. Its not about Chumas, this is actual Kashruth.

I think she flew into Ireland or something and then flew into Newcastle (Gateshead), She did take a train to get to London.

My neighbor was recently in England and I asked her if she went to Gateshead, She told me as part of the trip she was required to visit a seminary.

She had taken 2 planes to get to Gateshead after a long flight arrived there and was Starving. She walked into one of the stores to get and sandwich and was told she could not be served because “It was the Boys time”.

So she BEGGED the owner to sell her a sandwich and he refused because it wasnt the girls time.

She had to WAIT until the Girls time to get some food (She did not know anyone in Gateshead)

While the wait was only a few hours, When you are tired after a long trip and starving, it might as well be forever.

This is a case where a Chumra overtook a HALACHA

    @Melamed

You said I cannot understand why chatrooms and the Coffeeroom are taking the place of research and asking one’s Rav.

In general there are alot of issues people are for whatever afraid to discuss or ask (Not Just Halacha) Its much easier for many to ask these questions online anonymously and get an anonymous answer.

Do you feel you can ask your Rav ANY questions (Empasis on ANY), maybe you feel you can, but there are many who do not feel that they can ask their Rav ANY question

I was reading a book by Rabbi Berel Wein.

    He tells the following story

He was in Jerusalem and was wearing sweats and jogging. While jogging he ran into Rav Sholmo Aueberbach.

He was embarrased that Rav Shlomo should see him this way, but before he could say anything, Rav Shlomo said, NU, your health is important too

I personally do not like them, because I dont like tight clothes.

But I see plenty of Israelis who seem to wear them even on Shabbos and they seem to be Shomer Shabbos

<em > A. Don’t keep the community’s level of chumrah (ex. maybe a mainstream Lakewood school refusing a child whose mother wears bright colors.)

    B. Don’t keep some actual halacha. (ex. shabbos. Or doesn’t cover her hair).

I can tell you of some more modern yeshivas who WILL take kids from homes who are NOT Shomer Shabbot and NOT even Kosher and even these kids will become religious.

It is just as likely that a kid from a non-religions home (especially younger ones) will be influenced by religious kids and rabbis than the other way around. I know PLENTY of people who fall into this category
