There was no limits to immigration to palestine until the White Paper came out, HOWEVER it was not seen as desireable to go, there was starvation , hostile neighbors etc. It was seen as a lower standard of living Palestine in the 30’s than Europe was, The USA was alaways seen as better

However there was a fairly large German Jewish emigration in the 30’s with the advent of Nazism.

Better a physical death in Europe than a spiritual death in America.

This is nonsense, Did Rav Moshe , Rav Aharon Kotler or others who were able to escape hold by this shitta.

Those who said to stay were wrong, What they should have done is send Rabbaim to the USA and built Yeshivas. Already around the year 1900 New York City had the largest jewish population in the World and it might have been the richest as well as many Roshei Yeshivot went to NY to Fund Raise, but did not say to use the money there to built yeshivas in NY

I agree do NOT confront him, it might make matters worse.

It bothers you, so its an issue, Here is what I would do. You sort of need to figure out if he looks at it alot or stumbled upon it or looks occasionaly,

This is what I would do. Tell your whole family you are installing Guard your Eyes, Everyone will monitor everyones internet use. Say it applies to you, your husband and all the kids.. Do NOT say any more.

Either one of 2 things will happend, He will stop all by himself or you will figure out how often he looks at it. If he looks at it alot, I think you will need to see a therapist more, if He stops problem solved and no harm done.

How do you know which times the gedolim are right and which times they are wrong? And can you please let everyone else know when you’ve made a determination that the gedolim are wrong on a matter?

Anytime someone points out a case when the Gedolim were wrong, an excuse is made like You didnt really understand what they said, or if had listened they would have been correct.

The simplest is, The gedolim who said to stay in Europe in the 50 year before WW II, when Jews first started emigrating to the US, the Gedolim said it was a “Traif Medina” and assur to go. When the US was closed to immigrants and in the 1930’s with the advents of Nazism , Palestine was still open to Jews (Until The 1939 White paper) and the Gedolim said Palestine was “Traif” and assur to go.

Had some gedolim emigrated to the US and Palestine (Rav Kook did go to palestine, but of course many Charedim didnt agree with him) Perhaps yeshivas could have been built in the 1910-1920’s in the US for example

The 1492 Explosion from Spain left a terrible mark on Judiasm and people were really ready for Moshiach, and really needed it as they were very downtroding, Out of that Rubble came Shabbtai Tzvi (One of the biggest False Messiahs in History)

WOW The Fall of the Romanav (Russia) , Hapsburg (Austria-Hungry) and Hohenzollern (Prussia/Germany) regimes after world war I ,very much affected the jews, probably more than the Arab Spring ever could.

And the regimes that replaced them were MORE radical than these.

There was much instability after the fall of these regimes and likely led to the Holocaust

    WOW

There has been many times in the past where people rose up and revolted against their leaders. The Arab Spring is not the first or the last time this has happend

It most recently happend in the late 1980’s when the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall fell. Communist country after communist country (starting with Poland) rose up against the Soviets and the communists and they communists fell.

But there was political instability in the Post World War I era (Czarist Russia fell)

There was instability during the Napoleonic Wars when the ancien regimes began to fall (Most of the Monarchies in Europe fell between the French Revolution and the Russian Revolution)

And some revolutions have failed, The 1905 Revolution in Russia and the 1989 Tianamen Square revolt in China.

There have always beed disasters, the only difference now is that you know about them, Hurricans, Tornadoes, Tsunami if it happens we all know about it which wasnt the case.

Did you know there was in Hurricane in NYC in 1788, Why didnt the Geolim write about it, Probably because they never heard about it.

Its One thing to Learn all day in the yeshiva and never leave

Its quite another to learn part of the day and Give Shiurim, perform Chessed and share what you learned with others.

The Charedim today in Israel, mostly do the former and not the latter and when Chilonim meet a Charedim, they Charedi is usually “Kiruving” him by throwing a stone

The other “strains” are inauthentic break-offs of Judaism. They have nothing to do with Yiddishkeit, other than in name only

Charedi Judaismsis also a “strain”. Chasidism stems from The Baal Shem Tov and his followers and the Litvish comes from The Vilna Gaon/ Chatam Sofer and their Disciples

No, gavra. Like I mentioned above, many Chareidim already never accepted government funds they are legally entitled to under the law

Except for Neutri Karta almost ALL Charedim in Israel take some government funds, Brisk does not take for the Yeshiva, but individuals still do it

How do you think people with 10 kids who learn in Kollel dont starve in Israel?

    They get government funds

Yup. That’s another problem. Which is why the rabbi’s gotta cater his decisions to the wishes of the masses, not halacha. If there’s a dispute between the machers and the rov, the rov should prevail and the machers put in their place.

Not everyone who is a Rov is qualified or able to led a shul, having a Board of Directors can rectify this situtation .

In Charedi communties they enforce community standards, they have signs posted on the walls of the latest Chumra

Everything is community controlled so if you stray, they will kick you out of shul and kick your kids out of Yeshiva

In the more modern communities, it doesnt work this way, the yeshivas and Shuls are independent of each other and cannot enforce rules.

The Charedi Shuls and yeshivas are generally run by a person and the yeshiva or Shul is personally his (Or his family), the more modern are run by Boards of Directors and the Rabbi is an employee of the Shul. basically if there is a dispute between the Rabbi and the Big Machers in a Charedi Shul, the Machers are gone, in the Modern Shuls the Rabbi will be gone.

An Italian couldn’t understand Spanish (if he only knows Italian) and a German couldn’t understand Yiddish if he walked around Williamsburg

I had always heard that Italian and Spanish were similar.

Last summer I was in Italy and I dont speak Italian, I would ask people if they spoke english and they said no, I would then ask them if they spoke spanish (I speak some spanish) and they said no.

I then asked them what I wanted in SPANISH, and they understood and was able to help me with my request. Eventually I stopped asking people if they spoke spanish and just asked them directly in Spanish what I wanted and I got what I wanted.

    @Golfer

IMO it is likely the MO people probably do leave more than Charedim, but I dont think it has anything to do with hashkafa.

It IS easier to leave if you are MO than Charedi, You likely speak english better , You likely dont have a jewish accent, you likely dress like everyone else, you likely have a secular education , you likely can behave in the outside world and most likely your family will not disown you.

If you are Charedi the break is much more extreme, and more difficult to do. Also they are married younger and breaking away involves kids and people cannot function in regular society.

If you want to say the keeping people in almost by force works better and keeps more in , you would be correct, but I am not sure if having miserable members is such a good idea either.

English is not derived from latin, Latin derived languages are called Romance Languages Like French, Italian, Spanish and Portugese.

English is probably derived from Old Norse, but around the year 1300 or so the language changed drastically, so if you see Beowolf, it is meaningless to a modern english speaker and even Canterberry Tales is very hard for a modern english speaker to comprhend.

However German and Yiddish are VERY similiar, like Spanish and Italian or Spanish and Portugese (These languages are very similar and speakers of each can mostly understand each other) A german speaker would not understand yiddish 100R%, but it would be significant

I hate German. It may be my upbringing – my mother was born there and she won’t even say that word! She says she was born in Europe. She has a stateless passport. –

I think you can’t beat the warmth of Yiddish.

How can someone say they hate German and Love Yiddish????

They are almost the same language and sound almost the same to the untrained ear (Sort of like Americans cant tell the difference between Australian and England English and Europeans cant tell the difference between US English and Canadian English)

FYI the IDF might have even had some clandestine help in the freedom of Rav Hutner.

Even though the Jordanians fought the Israelis in the 6 day war, they werent exactly enemies . They both had the same enemy (The Palestinians) and the Israelis helped King Hussein defeat Black September when they tried to overthrow King Hussein shortly after the Dawson Field Hijackings . Its likely Military intellegence at the very minimum was shared in the Dawson Field Hijacking to free Rav Hutner and the other Hostages

The charedim generally take more in benefits than they pay in taxes, since most dont work and 56% of them are in poverty, they get social benefits.

The can threaten to move to the US, unfortunatly many of them are not US citizens and even if they are married to a US citizen visas for spouses of US citizens have been more difficult to get since 9/11 (Its been a point of contention nothing to do with Charedim in particular, just with Israelis wanting to come to the US)

And then there is the cost, It costs at $1000 a plane ticket per person to come to the US, a minimum of $10,000 per charedi family just for the plane tickets (assuming 8 kids and 2 adults) then you have to pay for US passports and then you will have to pay the costs of settling in the US (IE deposts on rent, purchase of all new possesions) at least anout $500 per person. which is $1500 a person MINIMUM (A US passport costs $110 if you dont expedite it) with 600,000 Charedim in israel it would cost $900,000,000 to bring them all to the US (and thats a low number, restttlement costs would likely be higher as shipping costs of things like Seforim would be expensive)

Finally there is not enough capacity on the airlines to transfer that many people (You just cant add flights due to landing restrictions in major US airports due to overcrowding)

So they are for the most part stuck there.

Frankly I think its a game of chicken, with both sides hoping the other backs down (usually the Pro-Draft people back down) but with both sides egging on the situtaion it seems headed for a showdown.

I do think if they cut back on benefits at least some will give in and go. Some will never give in and will need to go to jail for a few years before more will give in and some will never give in compating themselves to the Maharam M-rotenberg

Actually the Army doesnt want the Charedim to serve, theyd rather not have them.

But there is a solution I think agrees with everyone , Someone said make it a positive to join, how about make it a negative not to serve.

The Charedi Gedoilim have said its a Shaas Shmad not to serve, but they didnt say the government had to give Benefits. Simple only give social benefits to those who serve. The charedi population is poor, they need those benefits or they will starve.
