Certainly it was allowed to hit a kid in goyish schools

Have you ever heard of the “Whipping Boy”? It comes from the time when the King was just a child. Normally in the olden days when I child got something wrong in school, He got hit, However you were not allowed to touch the king, so a subsiite child was brought in to get hit instead of the King. So if the boy king got an answer wrong, His “Whipping Boy” got spanked

The Life expentancy in NYC around the year 1900 was 41, Today is about 80

While infant mortality is not unheard of , its quite rare and children dying is also very rare, It was very common in those days. Most people did not make it to adulthood

Having Kerosene Lamps in peoples houses for light was a major cause of fire in the older days. While fires are still fairly common, they are not as common as in previous generations and we dont have fires that wipe out half a city

The reason why Israel took in the Russians is because of the way the law of return was written. it is basically written after the Nuremberg Laws which defined a jew as anyone with a jewish grandparent. The communists also defined people as jewish and put a J in their passports if they had a jewish grandparent even though the person wasnt halachically jewish.

Unfortuantly the non-jewish world calls someone with a jewish father ,jewish and will persecute or kill them for it. Those people get the worst of both world, they are treated like a jew, but not really a jew

Reform Bark Mitzvahs are not a problem, as a dog is perfectly able to reach the same level in Judaism as any other Reform person.

A reform jew can become a Baal Tshuva, a dog cannot

Reform today is not the reform of 50 years ago, it is very weak and dying (The numbers are only claimed higher because they claim unaffiliated jews are reform, but in reality they are unaffiliated not reform)

Some of the comments here are just childish, They will likely continue to get smalled and weaker except for a few congregations here and there. People take insulting their “rabbi” as a personal insult, so rather than insult the rabbi, show positive feeling to the lay people so they will become either Orthodox or a Friend of Orthodox, rather than an enemy

Reform Rabbis make more money because their congregations are bigger (800-1000 familes) and the dues at reform synangouges are also higher

If you are a Rabbi at a Shtelbel you will never get a large salary, 50-80 familes cannot support $100,000 a year salary

People rely on internet advice for all sorts of things, There is no shortage of sites where people discuss lots of topics especially things they might not be so familair and get a sense of the topic at hand

It stands to reason someone looking for a yeshiva would ask about one on a site called Yeshiva world news, especially someone not from a yeshivish backround who might not understand that its really not done this way in the yeshivish velt

I never heard of this yeshiva and dont know anything about it. and my point is in general However I do not like these questions. People will only say positive about a yeshiva even if its not warranted. While there are many great yeshivas unfortunatly there are some not so great (I dont know about this one and I am not commenting on it)

When they first started selling Kosher sushi, One of the most popular ones was Yellowtail, Yellowtail is a kosher fish, but was not sold by the kosher fish distributers at that time (I dont know if they do it now) because it generally was not eaten by jews. The Restaurant asked I think it was Ossies to get it for them and they got what the chef called lousy fish. The Chef went down himself with the owner to South St Fish market (The Main wholesale market in NYC) to get the Yellow Tail Fish and taught the owner how to buy it

I dont know where you live, but if you read, you can buy Salmon and other kinds of fish that you can indentify from a non-kosher fish store, Ask your local rabbi how to do it

Ive seen Salmon in the chinese Fish markets for about $3 a lb.

Fish is not like Meat where it has to be Kashered, It just has to be cleaned and its the same cleaning from a Kosher Place or a Chinese fish market.

BTW according to that OU website its just doesnt ave to be Salmon, It can be other fish too as long as you see the Skin and can identify it. Flounder is actually pretty easy to indentity as long as you see the fish whole as its a Flat Fish and its eyes on the top of it rather than the sides (Flat Fish do not swim like you think, they swim on the bottom of the ocean sort of like a floppy Pizza)

I am not poskening for you, but Fish isnt like meat, I do not do this, but there is opinions (and not conservative, reform or OO either) that you can buy Salmon from a non jewish fish store especially if you give them your own knife , Fish does not have to be kashered like Meat and there is no reason fish from a kosher store should cost more than than non-kosher store. If you do not have a fish knife, they can cut it for you and you just shave off the edges where their knife touched

I forgot exactly, but I live in NYC and there is more competiton so most kosher items are cheaper. I buy them at the Kosher Supermarket (As opposed to the Kosher Fish Store (We have fully kosher Supermarkets in NYC))

KRM is one of the cheapest places to buy stuff

The item really in question is neither Gefilte or Ptcha, its something else (Actually its Herring )

I have read the Meisels book that was quoted here (There are actually 2 related one, Shabbos Secrets and Food Secrets) and he seems to have ideas of the holiness of certain types of food and is opposed to eating other foods. He for example thinks one should eat Chulent at Melava Malka instead of the minhag Hamakon of Pizza (Because there is some “Holiness” of Chulent over Pizza)

I am very gracious to my host and would never insult them or make it seems like I am ungrateful. The foods I dislike the most usually I have ways around it. I have mentioned more than once I dont really care for Gefilte, and I have a simple solution , its called Chrain, Just dump a ton of Charin on the Gefilte and I am good

Thnakfully the one I am really repulsed by (even the smell) is rarely served by anyone I know and if its done, Its only at Shala Shudos and never given to me on my plate. Its sometimes served at a KIddish in Shul and its almost never eaten except by one or 2 people and the rest is thrown out.

Like any other person there are foods you like and foods you dislike and some people dislike certain smells of things, Its not usually kosher , but I have walked past Indian restaurants (It might be the Cumin) for example where the smell goes into the street and couldnt wait to walk past that restaurant. But then again walking place some place of Bar B Q and that smell is amazing

Haimy I have never been to your house , but I really doubt they leave after 10 mins. When Rav Yaakov says 60 mins , he means from the start of Kiddush, not the start of the first course being served. Kiddish alone takes at least 10 mins and add Motzei and thats also at least another 10 mins , so you have 20-25 mins right there.

Do your kids go with you to Shul and is there a Kiddish in Shul? Many times when there is a kiddush in Shul people really arent hungry afterwards. You your kids pig out at the kiddush, they probably dont want any food at home. If this applies to you maybe try to avoid the kiddush in Shul or just eat later.

I would like to know of a Rav who paskens that if there is a food that you are repulsed by, that it is still required to eat it at a Seudah. And if a rav really does Posken such things, he really isnt that smart. Forcing someone to eat food they hate will cause a greater hatred than just the food as the it becomes associated with something else. I’ve seen kids being forced to eat foods they hated on shabbos and found out later they went OTD because they associated shabbos with these foods

Most of the the foods that are there because thats all the jews could afford in the Alte Heim. Nobody sane would eat Ptcha anymore

We have had this debate before , but there are certain foods that will never be found at my house because I really cannot stand. Not only do I despise them, I get totally grossed out by them (Actually its not Gefilte which some here think is my least favorite) Its some other items, Im sure other will tell me how much they love them. One of them I cant even smell as it really makes me nauseous. Having a food at the table that literaly makes you nauseous does not make a good seudah. and the other item I will only eat begrudingly if someone serves it to me in a plate and I dont want to be a rude guest. I will eat it sort of the way a kid will eat Vegiitables that they hate.

Ive read the Mesiles book and not impressed., Eat what you like, not because there is some “Gemtria” somewhere.

I am sure Barron Trump and all the Trump Anicalach do not eat at state dinners in the white house, Thats for adults only

I once heard a rav who was asked how he was going to stop talking in Shul, and he said he would speed up the davening. He noticed that when the davening lags, some people begin to talk and when you speed it up (within reason) , it does make a difference

You are tackling the problem from the wrong end. if the kids are bored or fighting with each other , A sefer isnt going help, forcing them to sit at the table or eat foods they hate isnt going to make them nessasarily love it, It might backfire

Shorten the meals. (I am serious)

Dragging along the meal with long dvar torahs only gets some kids ansy and restless.

As a parent you should know how long your kids can sit at the table and make the meal that amount of time.

Its a straw man argument to say money spent on opulent things should rather go to feed the poor, Nobody really belives that, its just used as an argument against anyone spending money in a way you dont agree with.

that being said, we can see clearly the decline of the doros, Unfortunatly many princes grow up feeling entitled because their father was the king, King Rehoboam is more the rule than the exception
