It really depends on what you are trying to do, creating an object in Javascript is pretty fast. Running a long calculation in Javascript will cause the browser to block as there is only one thread of execution. Though with modern browsers you can use web workers. But the two tend to be used for very different things.

I have to say Javascript is one of my favorite languages, and I spend about 80% of my work day working in it. (Though I will admit haskell and erlang are growing on me)

Is there an actual difference in process time between the two methods, Zach?

I suspect not much if any, it would depend a LOT On the compiler and language we are talking about. In Haskell you must have the else clause for reasons that are not worth going into here, in other cases it just depends on programmer style and things like that

I do know that when my wife and I got married we had a hard time finding a ketubah in Meah Sharim (Its her second marriage, my first).

As I recall the difference is only a few words.

    In Javascript:

    var totalCartonsOfMilk = hasEggs()? 6 : 1;

    lisp:

(let (totalCartonsOfMilk (if (hasEggs) 6 1)))

First of all what are your skills, and where are you located?

Second almost no one gets a job these days by sending a CV to an add on a web site. The typical web site will put up an add and get 200 resumes, so this is not the way to go. What you need to do is network. Go to trade shows or other events where people in that field will be and meet them, shake their hands and give them your business card. Talk to your friends and see if there are openings where they would that you might fit into and so on.

There are a few good books on this:

48 Days to the work you love

    Who Moved my Cheese

    Fired to Hired.

    There are probably others.

Also you need to make yourself stand out from the pack. If I am looking at a stack of 100cv’s I need reason to pay attention to yours

Keep an eye on the clock. Really, its one thing to have a few dvrei torah, its another if you don’t start eating until 11:45!

Actually our house rule is that Dvrei Torah wait until the meal, we just let the text of the haggadah speak for itself.

Once it gets running I plan to take it at least once. I live in Israel but don’t get to Jerusalem very often.

As for it having cost to much at this point is is sunk cost. Which is to say that the money already spent, so there is nothing that can be done about that.

Don’t make promises! Don’t say something like A year from now you will have made a brit because well if in a year she has not she will feel worse.

As a good rule of thumb, say what would I want to hear if it was me?

That being said my wife and I went threw this and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Jobs that pay a lot of money do so for a reason, not everyone can do them, or they involve a fair amount of risk. As such if you want a job that pays $100,000/year you need to figure out what skills you need to get that job. And its not going to be a matter of reading one book or taking a 3 month class. It will probably take years to get there.

And how much do you pay the cleaning lady here in NY?? How much better is that than slave wages?

Well it depends, are you holding a gun to your cleaning lady’s head? When I say slave labor I mean slave labor. As in people who don’t work get shot on the spot, not someone paid minimum wage to clean a house.

And for the record we clean our own house.

If facebook is the worst thing in our generation life is not so bad!

Our ancestors had to face Pogroms, epidemics that could kill half of a town or more, Expulsions and worse. We have facebook.

Plus I’m not sure its fair to blame facebook if someone has an affair and then posts pictures to facebook getting caught.

the Idea that an engagement ring MUST be a diamond dates to the 1950’s or so and probably did start with DeBeers. If you want to give a Diamond ring by all means do so, but don’t think its some custom that has always been there, its modern.

Oh and if possible find out where your Diamond came from. Some come from parts of Africa where they are mined by slave labor.

Practice! The few times I have had to give a talk for one reason or another I have found that giving it in advance to a few people can really help. I had to give a talk in university, my professor made me give it to him first. He then made me do the entire thing over again. (The new version was much better)

Ok folks just remember the wedding lasts a few hours, the marriage will last for (we hope) a lifetime! What do you bet that 10 years from now this is the funny story that is told around the dinner table.

The quality of the wedding has very little to do with the quality of the marriage.

We are rather fond of Flux. There is also phase 10, 5 Crowns and a bunch of other card games. I think there is a really good game store in Manhattan, If you go there and tell them what games you have liked they will probably be able to steer you to other games.

My 3 year old has become a jigsaw puzzle machine. Last week I think we did the solar system puzzle 5 times!

My wife and step daughters also love Settlers of Catan.

IANAR, but I don’t see any good reason why you should not have good live insurance. OK Sure we all want to live to 120, but not all of us will. People die young, it happens. And if by some chance it should happen to me I don’t want my wife and kids to be destitute!

How many people have you seen collecting for some widow who’s husband died young? Don’t let it be your family.

One thing my wife and I have been doing of late is the Envelope method. At the start of every month we take 4,000 nis out of the bank and put in envelopes for different uses. So some is marked “Food”, Some “Pessach”, “Clothing”, “Vacation” and so on.

There are a few good points to this plan:

    1) We know how much we want to spend on each topic, and how much we have spent.

    2) We agree in advance. If there is 500nis in the “Kids clothing” envelope and my wife goes and buys clothes from the kids, I won’t be mad at her, we agreed to it! (or vice versa)

    3) Money is saved in Advance for things, We stared the Pessach envelope 3 months ahead of time.

Its nice to not fight about money!

@tomim tihye: It depends, I don’t think everything in a normal news cycle is a message from above. Its just with a 24×7 news cycle these days it is way to possible to let it drive you nuts.

I don’t know if these events are messages or just normal life. But either way I’m going to keep doing what I am doing, provide for my family and be the best man/husband/father I know how to be.

Why would you even consider the possibility that he should sell his house, considering the aforementioned halacha that he should be supported to live at his original standard of living?

I would guess because he can no longer afford to keep it and if he doesn’t the bank will foreclose on it.

Personally I’m not rich but I do OK. I had a rough patch last year and a few people helped us out. I kind of felt really bad about it because even with all that was going on I was pretty sure I was still making more than one of them. Mostly we got a lot of moral support, which really did help up keep going.

A psychologist can help you, but its not magic. You need to do the hard work, pretty much all he can do is give you good directions. Of course if there is something physical wrong they might be able to point you in useful directions.

This type of crazyness happens ever so often. Ok right now a lot of it seems to be happening all at once, and we have better news reporting so you hear about it more. But its not the first time nor will it be the last. IN 1848 about half the countries in Europe had revolutions, in the late 1980’s all of eastern europe changed with several ugly wars.

But really don’t put too much mental effort into things that you can’t control.

It makes sense to rent if you don’t have enough cash on hand to cover problems that may come up with your house, or if you think you will need to move in the next 3-5 years.

Even if you say Well my house payment would be $800 but my rent is $900 that is not the whole story. If you are renting and the house needs a new roof its your landlord’s problem, If you own its yours!

If you can afford a house on a fixed rate loan where the payment is less then 25% of your take home pay and you have an emergency fund it can be a good choice.

(My wife and I rent, but would like to own at some point)

You probably can from google docs, search their template library. The other nice things about google docs is that it is free, can be used from any computer with a web browser and can be shared. You can also see who made what change.

I’m using google docs to work on a book proposal with a friend, he is in DC I am in Tel Aviv and we can both edit at the same time and see changes in real time.

@a mamin: it may be so, but i don’t know. I do know that the job market is ruthlessly competitive, at least in software (which is what I do). If you want to be employed don’t just be capable be extra-ordinary! Because if I’m looking for people thats what I am looking for.

And @cantreq said education, not a degree. While they often are seen as the same thing they are not. And while it does not guarantee you anything it does improve your odds quite a bit. Most jobs these days pay you not for what you do, but for what you know. Mine sure does! Anyone could sit here and stare at this screen 10 hours day, very few people can write code as well as I can. Learning to do this took many years and you can be sure I’m still working on it.

The problem is that to be hired someone (Jewish or otherwise) needs to be hire-able. That part of the equation seems to be left out of this conversation much of the time. If you want to earn more than $12 an hour you need to have a good work ethic and the skills that an employer needs.

A company hires people to create value for the company in some way. If you can’t do that they are not going to hire you, end of story. If the only value you can provide is doing menial work in a warehouse well then you are not going to get paid much because a lot of people can do that job. Jobs that pay well require specific skills.

Crying “Well people should hire more Jews” is pushing the buck to someone else. What have you done to make yourself a person who someone would want to hire? Start with that question and you might get some where.

What the wolf said, use a google docs spreadsheet! It will do exactly what you want, and you can share it over several people so everyone can edit it.

You may even be able to find a template for what you need that will set everything up for you.

You know instead of just shouting at the original poster, try giving a polite and reasoned response, maybe he (she) doesn’t know and wants to know? One of the best way to turn people of yiddishkite is to shout at them over simple questions like this one.
