Actually even after shooting down Adm. Yamamato’s aircraft I think Japan still didn’t know that their codes. The various efforts that the allies took to keep the axis from figuring it out that the codes had been broken was quite extensive.

The one time pad can be proven to be unbreakable as long as you can figure out how to distribute the keys to the people who need them. The problem is you need 1 bit of key for each bit of data you wish to encrypt.

The substitution cipher you describe is about 2000 years old. Julius Caesar used it.

During WWII the Nazis used a much enhanced version called Enigma that thankfully had a few critical flaws that enabled the Brits to break the code.

Modern codes are based on all sorts of complex math that is way over my head.

You might want to check out the book “Land the Tech Job You Love” published by the Pragmatic Bookshelf.

As for where to find jobs, NETWORK. Talk to everyone you know in the field, ask them who they know, go to user group meetings and talk to people etc.

You might also want to check out http://careers.stackoverflow.com/

Just sending out resumes to jobs on monster or the like is putting your CV in a stack with a LOT of others, not always the best method to find a job.

I think my worst date was the time that the girl showed up like 3 hours late. (The scary part was I was still waiting for her). Needless to say there was no 2nd date.

Speaking about the negev, on the way to Eilat there is a open wilderness area, something like a national park,

I think you mean Park Timnah (I may have the name a bit wrong). It is really nice but when I was there for an astronomy trip last summer they would not turn the lights off which rather frustrated a bunch of us astronomers who were there to enjoy dark skies.

If you like outdoor activities there is no shortage of things to do in Israel, and most are within a few hours drive of Tel Aviv or Jerusalem!

I dont know a source, maybe my fellow CRers can help me here, but I’ve heard a few times that a lunar eclipse is a bad sign for the Jews

It should be noted that lunar eclipses happen about twice a year somewhere on the earth, and can be predicted centuries in advance. Now this eclipse will be total and deeper than many so it should be quite a site, and at least as of now (6:35 pm Israel time) the sky looks clear so I hope it will be worth watching.

NASA has a very good eclipse page with info on every eclipse for the next 10-20 years at least.

My only regret is that my 4 year old is too young to stay up and watch it with me. Oh well it will wait for the next one

Maybe they have been introduced to the wrong kind of women? For a trivial example if a guy only wanted to marry a woman with blue eyes and you introduce him to 100 women with brown eyes there will not be a match. Now replace eye color with something actually significant, such as life goals.

Head down to Mizpe Ramon in the Negev on a moonless night and see a night sky the way it *SHOULD* be. With nothing above you but a sky full of stars. (Ok there are places you can do that in the USA too, but none within 3 hours of New York).

Yes I totally fell in love with the Negev!

See if he can find a surgeon in NYC. Yes there are some first rate surgeons in Boston but there are also some in New York. I would also knock on the door of every hospital administrator I can find with my hat in my hand asking for help. They don’t have to give it to you but you might get lucky.

I would talk to the Professor and see what resources are available to help you (there will be some). Make use of those resources! This will probably mean a few extra hours a week working on stuff.

The other thing is that in Yeshiva you probably got pretty good at memorizing stuff, this is a useful skill in bio and chem class.

Oh and remember to have fun! This stuff when taught well is very interesting. My father is a biologist so I grew up around science.

Dial back your lifestyle as much as you can. Every dollar you don’t spend today you can put to your house.

Choose where you live with care. If Boro Park is very expensive don’t live there, think about somewhere cheaper (Though most of greater NY is pretty expensive). For $200,000 you will not be able to get much of anything in New York, but you probably can get a great house in Say Pittsburg or St Louis.

Also get out of debt, drive a used car and generally live like there is no such thing as a bank loan!

I can’t speak to the issue of the OTD child, but I am a BT with a secular family that I get along very well with. I think there are two major things to keep in mind:

    1) Boundaries… You need to establish that My life is lived this way your life is lived that way. As long as there are clear boundaries it makes life easier. Of course this is easier if you are not living in the same house.

    2) Communications, keep them clear and honest. In general people who go OTD do so for reasons, don’t just dismiss them but listen, really listen to your child.

I realize that this might not be popular advice

Predicting when the world will end is an old game. There was some guy about 150 years ago who predicted it 4 times (all of them wrong) What was amazing was that after the 3rd date came and went he still had some followers.

The technical term for this is “Eschatology” for anyone who may care.

A guy (or girl) who is a jerk will not be any more or less of a jerk if their grandfather is a Rosh Yeshiva. Nor will a kind an polite person be any different if their father is not.

(For the record my father is a university microbiology professor and my grandfather is a retired shop keeper)

Also do you want similar things in life? For example if you want to make Aliyah and he doesn’t (Or vice versa) it would be a problem. But even within the USA there is in town vs “Out of town” and general life goals. These are things that need to be figured out.

And if your gut is going “NO DON’T DO IT” then don’t!

    1) Don’t carry plastic of any kind

    2) Each month put aside a set amount of cash for clothing (put in in an envelope) and only spend that

    3) Stay out of stores.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to publicize one’s (own) wrongdoings. It’s a bit of chilul HaShem to do so.

If you did something dumb (and lets face it we all have) and then learned from it sharing that can give others hope! I mean if I know that someone else had (for example) way too much debt but managed to cut up his credit cards and live for many years without debt, then that can give me hope that I can get out of debt too.

(Actually I cut up my credit card ages ago)

    Taught myself (Did some reading)

all of those were taken with film cameras. The moon shot (its just 2 printings of the same shot) was 400 speed b&w film with the camera hooked up to a telescope, so in effect there was 1900mm F15 lens.

The dark sky shots were a simple old film camera (I think its older than I am) on a heavy duty tripod. I used Provia 400 Slide film and held the shutter open for 15 seconds with a cable release. The real trick is getting a very stable tripod and a very dark site. In this case they were taken from the middle of the Negev (around Mizpe Ramon)

As the person himself (or herself) what happened (and ideally what they learned from it). If they are an honest person they should tell you.

I was engaged to someone else a few years before I met my wife, and it was broken off. While I don’t talk about it (or even think about it ) very often if someone asks me about it I will give a brief explanation of what happened and why. And before anyone asks my Wife does know about it and did before we got married.

The very short version is we realized that our lives were going in very different directions.

As my friend The Wolf said, if you need the paycheck (and I expect most of us do) then it is time to move.

As for staying because you are afraid that he won’t pay you the back pay all I can say is don’t let him go deeper into the hole. If you work for another 6 months chances are that at the end of it he will owe you *MORE* back pay then he does now.

Find a job that pays on time. Best bet is that if he hasn’t paid you its because he does not have the money and probably won’t have it going forward. A job isn’t much good if it doesn’t pay you in full and on time. (And hey halachah requires that too)

First of all good luck to him. The most important thing is to remember that entering the workplace can be hard and having a supportive wife will help *A LOT*.

I can’t tell him what the right job for him is, I don’t know you or him. But here are some ideas:

Check out Dan Miller’s book “48 Days to the Work you Love” and Maybe “No More Mondays”. You will want to read them carefully and probably make lots of notes.

Also remember that the more debt you have the more risk, so minimize both!

Secondly, we don’t need to worry – we’re being looked after. Remember, Hashem’s in charge and He’s running things according to His plan, not ours.

By this logic I should tell my wife to not bother cooking dinner, because Hashem will supply it ready made. I think we all know it does not work like that. I would prefer it not involve poverty if possible

I am an unapologetic Zionist. For all its faults I love living In Israel and I love that I met my wife about 3 weeks after I got here.

I try to remember from time to time all the generations of Jews for whom “Next year in the Land of Israel” was a dream that had as much chance of happening as “Next year on the Moon”. I can live here in Israel, in prosperity and health. Yes I am thankful for that. (Even if I do complain about the bus a bit too often)

Should we worry about what will be 20, 30 years down the line?

THere is an old saying “Failing to plan is planning to fail” I think that covers it. Yes the Almighty is in charge, but that does not mean that bad choices don’t have consequences. If you make a huge mess out of your finances it will catch up with you sooner or later.

I had no idea that there was any hallacha about this.

However never look at the sun without a proper solar filter. Number 14 welders glass will work and there are other products (B&H will probably carry them). I have seen some amazing photography done with good filters and even something as simple as a web cam.

If you point a telescope or binoculars at the sun it could blind you in a fraction of a second! really don’t do it.

As for taking pictures of the moon, you will need a very long lens, ideally a telescope. However once you have that it is pretty easy. In terms of photography the moon is a sunlit grey rock. A fine grained black and white film will do really well for lunar shots.
