youre right we shouldnt use our own seichel in searching for reasons. but reasons are of critical importance in poskining shailos of course, for those that have daas Torah and are able to paskin.

and reasons are also valid in discussions like this when based on daas Torah. IF the reason given by mw13 IS valid, with a mikor, then it is reasonable to use it as a basis for an argument. IF it has a Torah source.

but your point: “The reason is that Hashem said so.” is of course a beautiful point, and the essence of Emes, that we should always try to keep in mind. thank you for writing it.

in reply to: Sheitels in Halacha #692559

the reason for EVERY Mitzvah is because Hashem commands it, but most Mitzvahs have reasons or taamim, which is the same word as “taste” as well as “reason”

just like we eat to stay alive, but the taam of the food gives us pleasure and helps us to eat, so too we do Mitzvahs because we are commanded but the taam of the Mitzvah helps us to do it and gives us pleasure when we do.

reminds me of when someone gave me a hug in Shul. i moved back and gently explained he probably didnt know that the Halachah to not kiss your children in Shul applies to adults as well and other forms of embrace such as hugging.

a few minutes later i asked a Tzaddik, Talmid Chochom who was also present, about this, just to be sure i did the right thing. he said the Halachah is as i understood it, but if someone hugs you in Shul, hug him back and dont say anything about it.

popa for your edification and anyone else who may be inspired by your prowess, vigorous exercise will not cancel out very poor eating habits. kind of like aveiros and Mitzvohs.

remember jim fixx the one person who really began the jogging craze in america, who died at the age of 52 of a heart attack after his morning run one day.

you should live to be 120, at least.

in reply to: To Potch or Not to Potch #1190079

pashuteh i think you are quite correct.

in reply to: Techeiles nowadays #793899

    no they werent proofs.

but perhaps no alleged proof is ever a proof.

    except perhaps in pure mathematics

in reply to: Techeiles nowadays #793895

that isnt AT ALL what he said

He didnt say he doesnt wear them because he just doesnt want to think about it. he said he wont publicly discuss the issue

    there is a huge difference.

you dont know his reasons, and i dont know his reasons.

in reply to: Techeiles nowadays #793893

If you ask anyone of them that doesn’t, you will find that, for the most part, they simply don’t want to deal with the whole issue.

I doubt if that is Rav Elyashuvs reason.

in reply to: Techeiles nowadays #793892

ive never looked into the controversy but im guessing the consensus of our Gedolim is not to wear it because we have lost the Mesorah, regardless of the wonderfulness of the proofs. wonderful proofs have been unproved many times in the past.

in reply to: To Potch or Not to Potch #1190077

i dont agree with oomis but if you believe any kind of physical rebuke is violence and it will adversely harm the childs psyche forever, then there will be found no type of potching or situation in which it is warranted.

in reply to: Techeiles nowadays #793879

i think popa was telling him, in a non-controversial way and without appearing to give a psak, that it is probably not a good idea to wear it

besides the OP was CLEARLY asking for a discussion about the issue and not for a psak

in reply to: To Potch or Not to Potch #1190063

    potching does not preclude talking

in reply to: Kiddush Hashem #894284

tomim, yes, i think thats the most inclusive usage.

the phrase has a specific Halachich meaning

It has various generally used meanings as well

some use it exclusively for public matters

    some use it less restrictively

it all depends on context, but i think the listener generally knows what is meant

Then I must have misinterpreted your response to minyan gal.

no you interpreted my response correctly, i was mistaken

actually i shouldnt have made the statement you referenced, in response to that particular post. i didnt read it well, i just noticed the part about children strolling across the Bima

in reply to: Why I'm going to let my kids run around in shul #824459

thats wonderful wolf. i didnt say that a Shul shouldnt be family=friendly, of course it should

in reply to: Why I'm going to let my kids run around in shul #824458

yes there are definitely two sides

if a child sees his father going to Shul early and with enthusiasm, and when he is old enough to sit quietly by his fathers side and sees the awe with which he treats the Bais Knesses, when he sees how his father davens with kavannah and is b’simcha to be in Shul and isnt in a rush to leave and means business and doesnt shmooze, he will understand what a Shul is.

when the child comes to play and run he will have good feelings about a Shul, but he wont know what it is.

in reply to: Why I'm going to let my kids run around in shul #824455

These kids will grow up knowing that shul isn’t tedious or unfriendly or a place of Kedusha

in reply to: Should a 2nd date be protocol ? #692835

Now if I could just prove these two lemmas

i believe the singular of lemmings is lemming, not lemma.

and what does a game have to do with the theorem?

unless you are making a reference to game theory?

so your goal is to have people be moser nefesh in order to, possibly, if this is done in large enough numbers, accomplish a de-stigmatization of something that is currently a stigma and many feel rightfully so. some who are about to make such a decision may not be so lofty in their goals

in reply to: Mixed Seating #876822

youth in the eighteenth century that aren’t much different from what we see today!

so youth today do not behave more immorally than in the past.

well thats surely a well known fact borne out by thousands of studies. who could possibly argue with such an assertion?

How could something be so bad and at the same time so good?

    you mean like chocolate cake?

smoking too is quite pleasurable to those that smoke.

ive heard that tightroping across niagra falls without a net is extremely exhilarating

In humans, accidental or intentional ingestion of large doses of silver nitrate has produced corrosive

damage of the gastrointestinal tract, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, shock, convulsions, and death (U.S.

EPA, 1985). Respiratory irritation was noted following acute inhalation exposure to silver or silver

compounds. Silver nitrate solutions are highly irritating to the skin, mucous membranes, and eyes (Stokinger,

    1981).

Ingestion, inhalation, or dermal absorption of silver may cause argyria, the most common indicator of

long-term exposure to silver or silver compounds in humans. Argyria is a gray or blue-gray, permanent

discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes that is not a toxic effect per se, but is considered

cosmetically disfiguring. Chronic inhalation exposure of workers to silver oxide and silver nitrate dusts

resulted in upper and lower respiratory irritation, deposition of granular silver-containing deposits in the eyes,

impaired night vision, and abdominal pain (Rosenman et al., 1979). Mild allergic responses have been

attributed to dermal contact with silver (ATSDR, 1990).

In long-term oral studies with experimental animals, silver compounds have produced slight thickening

of the basement membranes of the renal glomeruli, growth depression, shortened lifespan, and granular silvercontaining

deposits in skin, eyes, and internal organs (Matuk et al., 1981; Olcott, 1948, 1950). Hypoactivity

was seen in rats subchronically exposed to silver nitrate in drinking water (Rungby and Danscher, 1984).

there is a huge amount more about it. i could find nothing positive except from those who manufacture or sell it

in reply to: Tips for building immune system #715959

of course they seem to know what they are talking about. they are trained sales people who make their living from you purchasing their products.

Vitamin C, Silver (it’s looks like water), and Kyolic (garlic juice)

“Silver – The Dark Side of a New Health Craze

Ads for it litter the Internet and alternative health magazines. “Phyto-silver” (such as in the product previously sold by Seasilver USA until the Federal Trade Commission cracked down on them in June, 2003), colloidal silver, metallic silver, and silver salts are being promoted as the new germ-killing regimen. These writers and silver manufacturers cite hundreds or even thousands of years of “safe use” of silver for fighting germs and enhancing health. “Seasilver” was sold by a “multi-level marketing” (MLM) organization, so that the claims of efficacy were magnified by thousands of people who really wanted to believe in what they are selling to their friends and neighbors.

    Silver is toxic

But for more than 40 years we have known that silver is a hard, proven carcinogen – a cancer-causing agent. Metallic silver is listed in the 1979 Registry of Toxic Effects as causing cancer in animals. Claims that it is safe have come primarily from the companies that make silver products – hardly a trustworthy source of unbiased information. Silver in any form is a bio-accumulative toxic heavy metal, like mercury, lead, and arsenic. Its action as an antibiotic comes from the fact that it is a non-selective toxic “biocide…….”

Dr Pepper posted this in the other thread where this was mentioned:

“In my shul they tried it but it created too much controversy so it was discontinued. I generally stay out of shul politics so I don’t know what the issues were.”

    SJ, I agree with you

as far as the youth minyon, i know a lot of people are against them, i am not familiar with the two sides, but you might possibly want to start a thread on that, should be pretty argumentative.

    everyone has very good points.

oy we are truly entrenched in Golus.

in reply to: Why I'm going to let my kids run around in shul #824434

there is a sancticty, a Kedushah to the Bais Ha Knesses that derives from the Bais Ha Mikdosh. There are numerous Halachos that dictate proper conduct and AWE.

This is the way the Jewish People, Avdei Hashem, the kingdom of priests that we truly are, have always conducted themselves.

Yes the Bais HaKnesses has also been a place for the community to get together and discuss community problems, needs, and to fast in times of need. and for Mitvahs and sometimes the associated Seudas.

But it NOT a social hall to get to together to shmooze and party. At least not until america, where many have learned the meaning of the Shul from goyish attitudes, subconsciously of course

in reply to: Why I'm going to let my kids run around in shul #824431

when children come to Shul to play, they absorb and learn that a Shul is a place to play. this is quite pashut. they forever remember this lesson and when they grow up they still think of a Shul as a place to play,

to eat, to drink, to play with your blackberry and your friends, to shmooze about business and sports, (and also to daven).

Jews for J really bother me. At least pick a consistent side. Don’t waffle under “I’m a Jew and I believe in J.” [not that I’m advocating Christianity, but this just really bothers me]

i dont believe this is what they are. they are full-fledged Xans in their minds. they only use their previous Jewish identity as a ploy to attract Jews.

Mod-80, as opposed to all the brilliant studies quoted before in this thread?

According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year). In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years glued to the tube.

Percentage of households that possess at least one television: 99

Number of TV sets in the average U.S. household: 2.2

Percentage of U.S. homes with three or more TV sets: 66

Number of hours per day that TV is on in an average U.S. home: 6 hours, 47 minutes

Percentage of Americans that regularly watch television while eating dinner: 66

Number of hours of TV watched annually by Americans: 250 billion

this is not big news, pretty much everyone is aware that television occupies a prime role in the life of most americans

I know a lot of people with TVs in their house and most do NOT watch 2 hours a night. At least once they have kids.

well that sure proves your point that most people dont watch 2 hours of tv a night

who has 2 hours a day to watch TV?

very many people who have tvs in their house.

    congratulations to you though

    nice post bomb

    also

even given the very best and most moral programming,

would you invite a stam goy into your house, a nicely dressed well spoken person, perhaps a religious church goer who is always polite and kind.

invite them to sit in your livingroom every day for two hours and speak to your children, no proselytizing of course, just to speak to them, perhaps about daily events in his life, about his thoughts, his aspirations, his values, his beliefs, his entertainments. every day, for hours, over and over, day after day, pouring his mindset into your children’s receptive fresh minds, as they sit mesmerized, their minds absorbing like a sponge.

    well, would you?
