fascinating article
especially the story of Dr. Koop, the surgeon general
YW Moderator-80Memberi highly doubt that the poster wants an answer
i think its pretty clear he is interested in a discussion
YW Moderator-80Membercathy is more my speed
i wish i could say more
YW Moderator-80Memberthe people are certainly ultimately responsible to live properly
but the medical profession is not without a whole lot of blame
in general they talk a lot about “lifestyle” but are not really committed to the idea
they generally prefer to throw some pills at the “patient”.
thats the bulk
there are of course some exceptions
YW Moderator-80Membermy post was directed to wolf not dunno
i see how that could be ambiguous
YW Moderator-80Memberwell rudeness and bad manners create an environment which has a hashpoh on those immersed in it even if they recognize it for what it is
YW Moderator-80Memberim sorry,
that post of mr was deleted but he reposted it and it slipped by. he tends to post in a huge flurry and its hard to catch everything. you only see about 10% of his posts.
YW Moderator-80MemberYW Moderator-80Memberwhoah!
this is why some people are afraid to post here.
helpful pointed out that there is a preference for married people in some inyanim. you can apply it or not apply it where you choose.

YW Moderator-80Memberthis isnt going to happen without some direction (leadership)

YW Moderator-80Membersomeone might be interested to know that i knew sidney sheldon.
he also created a tv show called: “the patty duke show” among others.
one of the characters in that show was named after me.
November 30, 2010 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm in reply to: Very Interesting! The Reason Why We Eat Jelly Donuts On Chanukah #990779YW Moderator-80Memberolive oil isnt low in ldl and triglycerides
it doesnt contain any
it is a monosaturated fat and that is why it is healthy
(at least according to todays understanding of such things, that will inevitably drastically change within a decade or so)
and a persons blood levels of lipids including ldl and triglycerides is not related to their intake of said fats (except perhaps minimally)
YW Moderator-80Membereveryone agrees
popa was joking (reading aries post not as a suggestion of a midah but as a criticism of the idea of the thread)
his humor is sometimes invisible

YW Moderator-80Memberthis thread is specifically to exlude a Halachic discussion of the permissibility of dipping Challah in soup (see original post)
it is not a matter of chumras
feif un referred to using a tureen
without a tureen the issue is not clear cut and heavily depends on the way the ladle of the kli rishon is used
in my home the soup bowl is a kli sheni as the ladle is kept in the kli rishon and temporarily removed to pour the soup
YW Moderator-80Membercuriosity
YW Moderator-80Membermy wife drives a 2001 buick park avenue
on the state registration it is listed in abbrev form as a buick parave
YW Moderator-80MemberIt depends on whether there is a constructive purpose to their conversation and all the other factors relevant to toeles.
they certainly shouldnt be talking about their boys in front of you
and you shouldnt be listening.
the fact that it is with each other does not not make it Loshon Ha Rah unless they are not careful with the conditions of toeles
YW Moderator-80Memberi thought i would start a new tradition in my home of bagels instead of challah, but i guess not
YW Moderator-80Memberthanks tele and feif
i just found this browsing online:
Bagels are made by first boiling them in water and then baking them. One might think that since they are boiled they should be subject to the rules of Bishul Akum. Rav Moshe Feinstein (Teshuvot Igrot Moshe Y.D. 2:33), however, writes that since the boiling does not render the bagels even minimally edible, the bagels are not considered to have been cooked.
YW Moderator-80Memberno negative comments please
you may not think so but that is pure LashonHaRah
YW Moderator-80Memberthank you SJ
YW Moderator-80Memberwhat is rosenthal china and why does it need toiveling
i couldnt find out much on google except that its expensive
YW Moderator-80MemberAnyway, I didn’t have any real Turkey this thanksgiving. Does that make me holy?
could be…
unless you had pumpkin pie or cranberry sauce
YW Moderator-80Memberi have no idea
YW Moderator-80MemberI wish people who object could just look at it a little more objectively.
YOU are the one looking at it subjectively.
objectively the only question is what do the Poskim and Gedolim tell us is the correct behavior re this matter.
they HAVE spoken about this because there are important Halachic considerations and on this there is a difference of opinion.
YOU on the other hand have determined the correct course of action based on your own personal analysis.
YW Moderator-80Membermaserati!?…a go-kart.
i will only drive a Bugatti Veyron
you think some people possibly were lying?
the “super sport” version of the Veyron sells new for about $3,000,000
but i got a great deal on a used one.
November 29, 2010 4:03 pm at 4:03 pm in reply to: Give Gentiles Presents During Their Holiday Time #724708YW Moderator-80Membermyfriend: Why wouldn’t you tell someone to enjoy their holiday?
well minyangal perhaps it is an issur, prohibited by the Torah, which you are commanded by the Creator to follow, sometimes to die for. this is called Halachah.
perhaps it isnt an issur, perhaps it is in some circumstances. it certainly behooves a Jew to investigate these things and not just decide based on what feels good to ones wholly american mind.

November 26, 2010 7:40 pm at 7:40 pm in reply to: Shidduchim, What do boys look for in a girl? #712744YW Moderator-80MemberMaybe little boys can be sullen, but men in general…?
oh yes
at home, with their wives, not with their friends
wives, please chime in
November 26, 2010 7:20 pm at 7:20 pm in reply to: Shidduchim, What do boys look for in a girl? #712742YW Moderator-80Memberi think women tend to change moods much more quickly than men
but men are grumpier and kind of wall up in their quiet sullenness.
obviously these are very broad general statements
YW Moderator-80Memberi see
thanks for clarifying
YW Moderator-80Memberhomeowner i dont understand the point you are trying to make.
are you saying we shouldnt be thankful every day?
are you saying modeh ani is not a daily expression of thanks?
do you really think the fact that we only say shehechyanu on particular special days as instituted by Chazal that this indicates on other days we do not express our gratitude in many other ways?
do you have a point or are you just trying to find some fault in saftalas very sweet post?

i think (other than the nagging part, men generally dont nag)you have described a common male picture not female.
men are more likely to be moody and brooding and grumpy and lash out at their wives when they are upset about something else.
YW Moderator-80Memberto repeat:
This poster has determined how to conduct him(her) self and is asking for advice on how to approach the problem practically.
We dont need another discussion about the permissibility of shaking hands.

November 25, 2010 2:47 pm at 2:47 pm in reply to: Modern Orthodoxy, Chassidus, and the Rambam #712213YW Moderator-80Memberi certainly didnt say or imply “all” modes
the chareidim shitah is that chumros arent “unecessary”
i wasnt aware that MO are machmir on many things that chareidim arent, thanks for pointing that out
and of course dave hirsch is correct
YW Moderator-80Memberi also heard sever comes from sevara but with a different teich,
that you should show thought in them on your face, just not a greeting with no interest shown on your face
November 25, 2010 1:44 pm at 1:44 pm in reply to: Modern Orthodoxy, Chassidus, and the Rambam #712210YW Moderator-80Memberthe shitah of modern orthodoxy is to assimilate the modern goyish modes of conduct into their lives of adherence to all aspects of Halachah (generally, in practice, being as makil as Halachah permits).
while in this generation, in the western world, many Chareidim have also embraced the goyish culture and values in many ways, for them it is not a shitah, but rather a failing.
therein is the critically significant difference.

YW Moderator-80Memberi admire you
YW Moderator-80Memberhow cute

YW Moderator-80Memberlooks to me like bp was interested in information as to what had changed regarding the status of bourbon. doesnt seem like he actually asked a shaila.
but there is also such a thing as thinking things over, or changing your mind, or dealing with internal struggles, or improving your character or working on prishus
YW Moderator-80Memberof mice and men
YW Moderator-80Memberwhoah popa, lets be fair and honest here.
i lost a great deal as well and kept it off (the loss was over 5 years) and it was easy for me.
BUT
and this is a very big but
losing weight and keeping it off is for 99.9% of people who need to EXCEEDINGLY DIFFICULTand pretty close to impossible. quite a bit harder than stopping smoking which is a matter of totally rejecting something which you cant safely do with eating.
we all know this from experience and very clear large studies as well (if you go in for such things)
although it is popular now for overweight people to claim they are happy with how they are, many of them would sacrifice many things that are dear to them if they could lose the weight they so wish to.
