the dog may be man’s greatest civilizing influence.

there are some anthropologists who have no seichel and like to say amazing things that are illogical, and make ridiculous inferences

in reply to: kosher lamp #724946

    yes of course

i just was careful so no one would jump on the analogy and discredit it because of an unrelated problem.

in reply to: kosher lamp #724944

i made the same point here

    http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/kosher-lamp?view=all#post-184744

however i was careful to mention CLOSING the window shade.

OPENING the window shade is actually a shaila in some circumstances, if you open it deliberately to shine on your plants to make them grow.

i heard the tape a long time ago

i think the name was something like Rabbi Feur

if this isnt right maybe it will jog your memeory

in reply to: Tehllim at night? #723153

My guess is that you really don’t like it when someone makes blanket statements about another’s eternity (which is essentially trampling on Hashem’s domain), and are using a very deadpan satire to bring it to the forefront.

clearly this is the case, as i have said a few times before, but you said it better

wolf will not admit this however

in reply to: Frum Jews and College #1073099

    im guessing anarchism was meant

    i forgot to add:

    i apologize to charliehall

    he was absolutely correct

in reply to: kosher lamp #724929

    brisker

    yes

i just object to the connotations associated with the word “loophole”

in reply to: kosher lamp #724928

    apashutayid

    my point exactly

in reply to: kosher lamp #724926

wolf thank you for saying it might have been a typo (when you figured it probably wasnt) very kind and erlich of you.

it wasnt a typo, i was completely wrong

    i wasnt thinking

    thank you

in reply to: kosher lamp #724923

real-brisker im sorry i dont understand what you are asking or saying.

but whatever it is im tired of the word loophole already and have said enough about it

okay just this: “loophole” has an unpleasant connotation of essential dishonesty and disrespect for the law (without technically breaking it) this was applied by the poster to an application of Halacha and i objected to such a word being used in that regard.

in reply to: kosher lamp #724918

    moshe

i think thats just about exactly what i said. the “intent may be evaded”

the kosher lamp is not the evasion of the law forbidding the turning on and off of a light. it simply has nothing to do with turning a light on and off. it is blocking a light. there is nothing assur about closing your window shade. closing your window shade is not a “loophole”

blocking a lamp light is not a loophole either.

there is no intent to get away with performing an assured act because the Rabbaim forgot to state something in the law. that would be a loophole

in reply to: kosher lamp #724914

exactly eruv is not a “loophole” but it was an enactment of the Rabbaim to allow carrying which an forbidden m’ doraisa.

    t

in reply to: kosher lamp #724909

    it is a jab.

a loophole is a way found, to defy a law, that was not intended and is not in the spirit of the law

the kosher lamp is simply a clever way of applying Halacha

    do you use a blech?

does your question have something to do with going to college?

im not sure what you are referring to. he was extremely pro-kollel.

he also said it may not be for everyone.

    you asked me a question

    i answered you

if you want further elucidation, think about it

in reply to: Pets & Halacha #1152802

    ruffruff

i would guess they were talking about goats and chickens and the like, animals that worked or were eaten i dont think anyone had “pets” living in their house in those days. maybe a cat to keep away mice.

in reply to: Frum Jews and College #1073059

Rabbi Miller, tz’l speaks very disparagingly about college. he holds professors are lower than the mafia. he says colleges are the greatest source of the immorality that is currently infecting the western world.

although he is careful to not paskin Halachah in his thurs night shmoozes, he said it is absolutely assur for a girl to go to college. as for boys he STRONGLY discourages it but if there is a need in certain circumstances, he wouldnt say it is mutar but he said each boy should ask his Rosh Yeshiva

he went to college a LONG time ago. the vast knowledge of the world exemplified in his books has little to do with that time spent in college.

he says the history taught in schools is pure sheker.

in reply to: Pets & Halacha #1152796

yes there are definitely cases where it is a good idea to have a pet.

    it is not assur

fish? no comparison to the problems caused by a cat or dog.

in reply to: Pets & Halacha #1152793

i think i had some duplicates there

just kind of thinking out loud

in reply to: Pets & Halacha #1152792

a few that come to mind

anthropomorphizing an animal, treating it like a person

treating it like a member of the family

being fooled and showering Love upon it

making decisions such as how to utilize your precious time, taking the animal into consideration

    dealing with the Halachic pitfalls

giving the animal your food, buying its food, spending money on it, sometimes a great amount for health issues, when perhaps it should go to a Jew instead.

    spending time caring for it

in reply to: Pets & Halacha #1152788

it is not assur to have a pet

doing so however is fraught with practical Halachic and Hashgufic problems

i dont know anyone who has a pet or would consider having one, its not even a remote consideration.

but for others, who are presently holding somewhere else, it certainly is not assur, but should not be entered into lightly.

im very close to being certain that you do not have to leave the store for recorded kol isha, even an aval. if there was live singing, im not sure

we all know ask your LOR. everyone knows this

nevertheless Halachic questions and discussions are very appropriate here.

in reply to: Thank You Hashem for Global Warming #723048

by the way i have no idea, indeed it is impossible to have an informed opinion on the matter, whether or not there is global warming, and if there is, its cause.

    maybe there is global warming.

    maybe there is global cooling.

    you got me

in reply to: Thank You Hashem for Global Warming #723047

besides the fact that the interplay of all the contributing factors to sea level is complex and they have no idea other than pure guesswork as to prominent cause 11 thousand years ago, even the very fact of determining the world wide sea level 11 thousand years ago is not an established fact, in fact it cant be, any physical measurement 11, 000 years ago can only be based on theoretical assumptions and tremendously lengthy extrapolations

of course if one is bamboozled by the authority of scientism even on the deep theory end of the scientific continuum, you can come to believe anything

even that the gases and metals and rocks and water on the earth (which itself, along with the rest of the universe came into being by the explosion of something smaller than a poppy seed)

these atoms and molecules picked themselves up by their bootstraps and became you.

in reply to: Thank You Hashem for Global Warming #723044

There is NO question that the earth has warmed over the past 130 years. That is the period over which we have decent temperature series worldwide

    so what?

it has cooled down over the last 5 minutes, is that an indication of a the trend for the last 130 years?

there is approaching ZERO significance to a warming trend of 130 years in relation to the pattern over 5 billion years.

in reply to: Abusive marriages #722136

sometimes the “cause” for a failed marriage is the male partner, sometimes its the female partner, probably in most cases it is both, sometimes the problems can be worked out, sometimes they cant. sometimes the wife exaggerates or lies about the husbands behavior, sometimes the husband does, generally they both have some hand in this. weve heard people from both “sides” generalizing all cases from their case.

the original poster received her answer and seemed satisfied with it. this thread is offending a number of people.

in reply to: Thank You Hashem for Global Warming #723042

It is the long term trend that is clear

    the long term trend!!?

according to science the earth has had up and down temperature trends and trends within the trends and sub sub trends, etc for 5.000.000.000 years. we have meaningful records of a few hundred of those years at best

picture a graph of the temperatures during this time stretching from chicago to new york. it would take you a few months to walk along cursorily examining the data as you walk along the graph.

THAT would give you some insight into the significance of the trend in the last 50 years or so.

unfortunately we are only able to see the last inch of the graph.

the rest of the graph is “supposed” by unproven theory, speculation, and wild extrapolation which may or may not be valid

    your question is not simple

requires at least a familiarity with learning Gemorrah

but those that hold it is stealing it is because the party losing did not expect to lose and does not willingly give up his money to the other

you will certainly say, of course he knew he might lose and of course he gives up the money willingly, he gives it up doesnt he, he doesnt protest or put up a fight. i cant explain it further but theres your answer, ask a Talmid Chochum to explain it better.

in reply to: Popularity of Bourbon #731379

on the other hand i dont believe it is “pretension and fakery”

there are well documented genetic differences among people in regard to the ability to perceive different tastes.

“Why do brussels sprouts taste bitterly repellent to one person and bland – or even delicious – to the next?

A study published in the February 22 issue of Current Biology confirms the influential role of genetics in determining the wide range of human sensitivity to taste, ultimately impacting how we each perceive the world in a slightly different way.

“Each human carries their own distinctive set of taste receptors which gives them a unique perception of how foods and medicines taste,” explains Monell Chemical Senses Center psychophysicist Paul Breslin, PhD, who shares first authorship and is a corresponding contributor for the study. “This paper shows that a single gene codes for multiple forms of a taste receptor, with each form having a differing sensitivity to taste compounds. Further, a person’s perceptual sensitivity to these bitter tasting compounds corresponds strikingly well with their genetically-determined receptor sensitivity.”

nfgo3 i must take issue with you in a very strong way

    you are completely wrong

whiskey tastes nothing like nail polish remover!

    it tastes like rubbing alcohol

except for some ive tried like lapphroaig (spell?) which taste like rubbing alcohol after having been filtered through a burned-out compost heap.

if you can give me the name of some that taste like nail polish remover ill give it a try and will be glad to retract if i find you are correct.

speaking of ad nauseum i think we get your point bombmaniac. this same point about repetitious threads has been made MANY times before and you are committing the very crime you are accusing others of.

there are constantly new posters here who dont search through every thread to see if it has been discussed before

in reply to: Thank You Hashem for Global Warming #723033

    no one doubts global warming

quite far from the truth. especially among those that hold that the earth is 5,000,000,000 years old, a few hundred years of temperature recording, maybe 50 of widespread and accurate recording, and some gigantic extrapolation from earth cores leaves plenty of room for reasonable doubt.

and THEN among those that accept it there is controversy as to the cause.

but you wont see this in the established media.
