in reply to: Is makeup tznius? #768144

    im through

this will surely be a painful thread

in reply to: Is makeup tznius? #768143

Tznius does not mean that a woman is supposed to conduct herself in a way that is unattractive

correct. no one has said a woman should make herself unattractive. what what said is that certain women should not make themselves attractive, ie married women in public.

there is a world of difference between not setting out to make oneself attractive, and setting out to make oneself unattractive.

in reply to: Is makeup tznius? #768140

ahh but to defend my post partially, yid asked about wearing makeup in public and asked it daafka if unmarried women could wear it in public, ergo implying that married women could wear makeup in public.

in reply to: Is makeup tznius? #768135

yid although your post was specifically directed at women

    1. you are certainly correct about tznius in your first paragraph. this is largely ignored today sadly.

2.i believe the problem with wearing makeup in public is adaraba, it is a question with married women. unmarried women are encouraged to make themselves attractive in public to some extent.

    this is a lighthearted thread

no need for anyone to pull rank

no one has to give or defend any credentials

if any lawyers here are offended by the loosness or innacuracy of the discussion, then just dont read it

in reply to: I am sorry Pac-man #766380

    excellent!

i think hal meant (not moderator as in mod 80) moderator as in someone who moderates and counsels between opposing parties, as in referee, like what zees said about Aaron Ha Kohen.

im not taking any chances: closed

    from the NY Times:

“Most recently, such concern has been expressed over the dangers of eating raw saltwater fish in the forms of Japanese sushi and sashimi, Scandinavian gravlax, South American ceviche and raw or green herring, which is popular in the Netherlands.

When raw, most saltwater fish that are eaten can be carriers of anisakis simplex, a parasitic roundworm that may invade the gastrointestinal tract of humans, causing mild to serious complications.”

or perhaps the slimy black seaweed?

I wonder if we can start instituting all the women to wear veals.

i think it is an idea with some promise and should be considered. however im afraid peta would probably vehemently oppose the idea. besides the fact that it would be quite expensive and cumbersome, not to mention messy.

perhaps a scarf or veil would make more sense.

you are on very shaky ground when you start assuming why Hashem does things. hitler too, he should burn forever in the deepest pits of Gehenom, was an open nais. an ignorant nobody, an uneducated paperhanger from a lowly family, who in a few short years, through an incredible chain of events became the most powerful and dangerous man on the earth.

in reply to: Why are some Jews against Israel? #913134

no one is aagainst Israel. we love Israel.

that is why we are against the atheist, anti-Torah, anti Hashem political leaders of the government (in general, some are respectable Jews). Those who push for the murdering of babies, the celebration of abominations in parades in the midst of Holy Yerushalaim, eating pork, and the forced mixing of men and girls in the army. Those who most fervent wish is to be accepted by the nations of the world, and who are ashamed to be Jewish, and would like nothing better than to rid Israel of all traces of Religion, leaving “culture” alone.

A privately owned paper can choose to do what they wish!!!

not if they are accept a photo taken by someone else and sign a contract agreeing to not alter the photograph

i first learned trigonometry in the late 1960s, anyway i sort of learned it. it was very boring and difficult and aggravating.

i learned it again, if you can believe this, for fun, about 10 years ago, by myself, from a book. it hadnt changed one iota.

after the first time, i never used it.

after the second time i used it quite a bit, i started seeing things differently. i remember once thinking about how fast shadows moved, on fixed objects such as a light pole, at different times of the day. i had a reason for this question, nothing earth shattering, just curiosity about how the solar system works.

i was able to answer the question in a very clear and detailed and (continuous throughout the day) manner by using some very simple trigonometry, in my head.

ive used it in a similar manner many other times as well.

sometimes knowledge, like this, even can bring one to Simcha.

when you are old enough in experience to appreciate it.

in reply to: What Does Troll Mean? #764881

it comes from the expression “trolling” for fish.

where one lets a line remain in the water while one sits back and relaxes as the boat moves through the water just waiting for fish to latch onto the bait.

    the analogy is self evident

in reply to: Halachic Psaks in Coffee Room #764744

we have heard this expressed here over and over and over again.

you never discussed a Halachic issue with someone who wasnt a Posek?

you dont talk about Halachic issues with your friends?

do you meet with a Posek for every single question you ever had? do you call a major Posek when you forgot to say Yaaleh v Yaavoh at Shachris and you forgot the Halachah? maybe you should, but do you?

in the old days princesses married amphibians.

in reply to: Wireless Routers And Privacy #764654

    i believe that they exist.

but their utilitarian value has been way overated, the conformity to convention as an end in itself has some value, but in this case is not worth the price of extraneous effort and an increase in the likelihood of the dreaded accidental press of the caps lock key (located just above the left capital (shift) key.

besides in my youth i wanted to be a rebel like e.e.cummings.

in reply to: Wireless Routers And Privacy #764647

    icot

    glad to see you here

    i just installed a router

dont know much about it but i can follow instructions

    its like this:

cable to modem, modem to router via lan, router to computer via lan

now if i shut off power to the router will the signal bypass through the router so that it as if the modem was directly lan connected to the computer, as the setup that existed before the router was installed?

im guessing no and if i want to temp disable the wifi, while maintaining cable to the computer, i would have to reconnect the modem directly to the computer via lan

    yes?

    there was a Godol

the morning after the us presidential election he wanted to know who the president was

this seemed way out of character

he explained when he said the Brocha Lo Asani Goy he wanted to have a mental image of the most important goy in the country

that even in relation to him the Brocha applies.
