i get the feeling from the op, that although he wishes to try and collect the fee in this case, he sounds like he doesnt want to make his shadchanus in general a “business” and would probably be uncomfortable discussing payment up front. sounds like he gets a lot of pleasure in doing this as well as some Parnassah?

    am i right?

so sometimes a case like this might occur and then the question comes up how to handle it, not how he should change his practice so thaat it doesnt happen again.

    am i still right?

if i am please dont say well if he doesnt discuss payment up front he has to expect problems sometimes. true but thats not the point. what is asking is how to handle this case now, yes?

Cooking is done over a seal oil-lamp. A soapstone pot is hung over the lamp, continuously providing a soup or cooked meat whenever it is needed. The hunters catch seal, caribou and fish which the women prepare and cook. Sometimes meat is left to freeze and thin slices cut and eaten raw.

not sure if you are kidding but i had that same idea

however 1. she didnt say it was an igloo, but thats a minor point

    2. i think eskimos cook in the igloo, isnt that the main reason for the chimney? i think the heat just hardens the walls.

MAIZE is the Spanish word for corn

    not entirely true

maize is the word for what we call corn, could be it has a spanish origin but:

corn is a generic term for grain

columbus, or some professor who came with him, called the maize there “corn” meaning this is grain

maize is a specific kind of corn

the on the cob stuff is really maize in all languages

    i hope you are confused

in reply to: I Also Want One!!!!!!! #1017437

Kapusta, i have a question for you

why IS the k in your name capitalized? (not serious)

in reply to: I Also Want One!!!!!!! #1017436

    okay

ive got a few minutes to post

ive written this already a number of times

    im speaking for myself only

if someone will write ***exactly*** what they want as a subtitle

and i happen to see that post

and im not too busy i will usually do it

i do not want, usually, to be burdened with thinking up my own idea for the subtitle, i dont know all the posters that well

in reply to: Why is corn on the cob not kosher??? #1021300

some kinds of corn are eaten by humans

some kinds are only suitable for animal fodder

it also depends at what stage it is picked

    wikipedia has a nice description

Is there something wrong with driving with the windows down and playing Jewish music semi loud?

    most certainly

chronic exposure to loud sound damages the hearing. f you want to be able to hear your anyclach when they talk to you, guard your hearing when you are young

in reply to: Who thinks I am Joseph? #826018

    daniel

i think its a bandwagon thing.

now that a poster sees how everyone is criticizing joseph, its easy to do so yourself, without fear of one being considered rude.

in reply to: Why is corn on the cob not kosher??? #1021293

yes quark, until very recently there has been no problem with cotc in america according to all (or certainly the majority) of major kashrus agencies. although the interview with R’ Vaye was from a year ago and indicated there IS a problem, he lives in Yerushalayim.

this apparently is a problem only a few weeks old, as far as i can tell so far, that is why i didnt know what the op was talking about in his anectodal reporting of an incident.

in reply to: Why is corn on the cob not kosher??? #1021286

it was closed because of all the anti-frum posts coming in (deleted) decrying the unnecessary chumros.

it was re-opened because smartccokie understood that there IS a problem in america and that my post was mistaken and could cause some people to stumble. on the chance that he was correct i felt it important to modify my post and hear some more discussion

in reply to: Why is corn on the cob not kosher??? #1021281

on the other hand an alert from kashrut.com, dated 6/3/11:

“Corn on the Cob: Recently, kashrus agencies have reported finding insects in corn on the cob. When the husk is removed, these insects scurry inside in between the niblets. Frozen corn on the cob and canned corn do not appear to have a problem.

Guidelines to preparing corn on the cob:

Do not cook with the husk on.

Do not barbeque raw corn. Cook it first.

Remove the husks, wash the corn, and inspect well. Do not cook what has holes or is rotting.

After cooking, check the water, especially the top of the water. If insects or worms are found there, discard the corn.

Ed. note (6/15/11): The cRc and Star-K have not found infestation in the corn that they examined.

in reply to: Why is corn on the cob not kosher??? #1021279

starK and cRc both say there is no problem. you just have to take a look and make sure there is no obvious bugs present. you dont even have to wash it. i cant find anything on the OK site

in reply to: Why is corn on the cob not kosher??? #1021277

i have been informed by “smartcookie” that indeed there is a problem in the us as well

in reply to: Why is corn on the cob not kosher??? #1021275

It is not allowed in eretz yisroel. There is a major and ubiquitous infestation there. It is not a problem in the us. I dont know what the op was talking about.

proof from how our Fathers conducted themselve in those days as to how we must conduct ourselves today is far from amazing.

do you want to squeeze some ketchup with some cold roast beef gravy at the tip onto your cheese sandwich?

in reply to: Are you allowed to buy cut up fruits in a non jewish store? #778535

im not sure what erudite means

but No you are not permitted to.

some rule leniently on this when a variety of conditions are fulfilled, such as there is no meat department there, or the knife is known to be used only for fruit, or other things (im apparently not erudite enough to know which)

no one in my circles would ever buy such cut-up-fruit.

in reply to: Mechitza at weddings #1088804

Could us people kindly remind ourselves of who we’re talking about. Those same girls (still available) danced once more. When?! Right. On the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur. OBVIOUSLY both bochurim and girls had something else in mind. Could we compare s=ourselves to that generation. The Kedusha and Tahara! Rabbi Miller says (somewhere), boys went to pick a girl then, like one inspects and buys an esrog nowadays. Their lives were filled with holiness, he married to fulfill Ratzon HaShem, he sought the most perfect one for that tafkid. If we’d have that mindset, we’d be in great shape.

i think you guys are putting us on.

i think you are making this stuff up

    in reply to: Chumras #792626

    mik

you are arguing to the wall

yes we know what Hashem means.

some feel more comfortable writing H-shem than Hashem (perhaps because we say “Hashem” so frequently it, to some, has taken on a bit of Kedushah itself, there are other reasons).

does that bother you? do you feel a need to speak out and chastise someone who does this? has anyone berated you for not doing this? do you feel anger against those who do something that you do not?

    in reply to: Chumras #792621

    you are right bomb

however i like to misuse and make up words

    not a Halachah

    not even a Chumra

    in reply to: Chumras #792620

    gavra

probably you are not understanding me

people sometimes conduct themselves according to a Toradik feeling.

i wont cross over someones lawn to get to my car (for those who live in ny, i can explain “lawn” in a later post if you wish) if a sidewalk is available. i always (by always i mean usually) enter a building with my R leg first. etc.

i dont “push this down anyones throat” (a commonly misused and overused phrase here) its just a personal feeling

have you heard those that use H-shem say it is a Halachah? i doubt it. they just “feel” it is more respectable.

    in reply to: Chumras #792619

her friend did not say it is assur for all.

this is what her friend said: When I mentioned I always see plenty of chareidim in the library, she said, “Well, they aren’t really chareidim. see haifagirls 3rd post or so.

you of course are welcome to enter a library.

    in reply to: Chumras #792612

i would like to meet your friend

    in reply to: Chumras #792611

going into a public library nowadays, is certainlty not something to be done by someone who is trying to become a Tzadik, and increase his closeness to Hashem. i would only enter a public library under a limited set of circumstances.

    in reply to: Chumras #792610

did she say the salads should be removed because they will otherwise become fleishig? did you interpret her as meaning this?

many people are makpid, and rightly so, if their salad usually becomes leftovers for later meals, to remove it before the meat or milk comes out to ensure that it will remain parave, and not accidentally become M or F.

    in reply to: Chumras #792608

    hergush: feeling

    in reply to: Chumras #792604

the use by some of: “H-shem”

has been explained before. no one is claiming it to be a chumrah, and certainly not a Halachah

it is merely a personal heirgush.

and should certainly not be denigrated.

    in reply to: Chumras #792600

I’m not sure. Chumra Creep is a real issue, and perhaps this was a humorous way of trying to get the point out.

    exactly

    in reply to: Chumras #792598

this thread was started as facetiousism

in reply to: Jury Duty #777742

Better yet, suppose the parties are not in court during jury selection, as sometimes happens, and after you get selected, you then learn that the litigation is between two Jews, what are you supposed to do?

    we did not discuss this.

what i would do is tell the judge i cannot serve,(and i would refuse to serve unless the Rav instructed me to).

in reply to: Jury Duty #777741

i didnt ask him every possible situation that could occur. but i did ask him this, and i had my phone. he said i should tell them that i am not allowed to serve on a jury case between two Jews because of my religion. if they questioned me i should have them call him. if it escalated i would have to have played it by ear (meaning to keep in touch with him and refuse to serve on the jury unless at some point he permitted it)

in reply to: SoUp PlEaSe?! #777783

cant give you an exact recipe

    but this is good

    water

    a few tblspns canola oil

    all kinds of vegetables

osem onion soup mix, a bunch, this contains salt, so dont salt the soup until youve added the onion soup mix and tasted it.

cook for a long time, a few hours.

    that is all

in reply to: Jury Duty #777737

i prefer you ask your Posek

in reply to: Jury Duty #777735

im not sure what you mean

he didnt say anything about a need to investigate the Jews degree of frumkeit. i believe he meant there is no distinction. youd have to ask him for further elucidation.
