I’m sorry. I didn’t realize 80 wasn’t invited. I thought he was bringing the bourbon.
YW Moderator-77Memberare there good benefits??
Great parties in the mods’ lounge.
YW Moderator-77MemberThere’s no set time. It depends on if there’s a mod “on duty.” It could be 30 seconds, it could be 5 hours.
There’s already a thread for asking questions of the mods. It’s called “Mods? Mods?” and is under YWN Issues.
December 20, 2010 8:13 pm at 8:13 pm in reply to: The classics, Yidden, and the recent closed thread #719329YW Moderator-77MemberGot the reference. It just got out of hand too quickly and went from satire to disgusting.
YW Moderator-77MemberPoint taken. Please note the topic was re-opened.
December 20, 2010 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm in reply to: A Radical Solution to the Shidduch Crisis? #719411YW Moderator-77MemberA suggestion was made in another thread to delete the posts that are in bad taste and re-open the topic.
Done.
But please keep this discussion civil and on topic.

My thoughts exactly.

YW Moderator-77MemberOne cannot be a player and referee in the same game.
You can if you own the ball. Or the field.
August 29, 2010 7:19 pm at 7:19 pm in reply to: Which Singers Are Your Top 3 Favorites, (list by order) #1109056YW Moderator-77MemberI fixed the spelling.
YW Moderator-77MemberThe truth is that there were about two Jews who died (as far as I know)and the question of “where were the hundreds or at least tens of Jews working there, on 9/11?” is a good question.
Was that typo? Did you mean to say “about two HUNDRED Jews who died”?
A footnote to the Wikipedia article:

YW Moderator-77MemberIf you are considering giving blood, you should ask your Rav. There are those who hold you shouldn’t give blood in a general blood drive, but only give when it is designated for someone specific. The feeling is that if you give blood, and then a few weeks later someone in the community needs blood, you won’t be able to donate.
That being said, I have given blood in the past and I wasn’t scared or nervous. I don’t remember why I decided to give. And I’ve done it more than once. I don’t think I’m able to give currently because of medication I’m on. But if someone needed blood, I would certainly find out.
I know I can’t give platelets. That require better veins than I have. I tried once and they couldn’t get them from me.
I have no idea how I’d feel about giving a kidney.
March 23, 2010 9:51 pm at 9:51 pm in reply to: Health Care Reform Bill Got Passed, What's the CR's take on it? #681998YW Moderator-77MemberFirst of all, all of us would like to SUCCEED. However, what the Southern states did was SECEDE. There is a difference.
Second of all, there is just way too much bashing going on in this thread. It is hereby closed.
YW Moderator-77MemberTell your Rav you are going to EY. Ask him if there is a problem and if he can accommodate you.
I recently saw an ad online for a takeout in Yerushalayim for Shabbos Hagadol and Pesach. Don’t remember the name of the place, but I’m sure if you search on the internet you should be able to find it.
YW Moderator-77Membervas1820 is 46. (I guess s/he is also 1820, but that doesn’t count.)
YW Moderator-77MemberICOT: Great job!
YW Moderator-77MemberMod-77: And it took me a minute to get “hypothesis.”
potpie: First of all, I figured out the word hypothesis. It was mod-77 who couldn’t. Second of all, while I may know what obfuscated means, it’s not a word I use in everyday conversation, and neither do most people.
First of all, taking a minute is hardly the same as not getting it.
Second of all, I think haifagirl and I hang out in the same circles. I use, and hear, obfuscated quite a bit. Certainly more often than I use, or hear, automobile.
YW Moderator-77MemberToday, in the secular calendar, is March 14. Otherwise known as 3/14. Since that bears a striking resemblance to 3.14 (pi), today is known as PI Day.

I guess that makes me 39. Me, and Jack Benny.
In addition, rdreyfuss requested a number but never “called” one. Should we give him 40? Let’s take a vote. And ishman is waiting for 82, so we’ll need a lot more people to grab numbers before he gets his wish.
YW Moderator-77MemberReally haros? Never heard that!
Yes, according to several reports, his ex-wife is Jewish and their son is a chareidi rabbi in EY.
YW Moderator-77MemberThere is a frum lady who owns a store down the street from me. I pass it regularly. I always wave and/or wish her a good morning/evening. The other day one of her employees was outside on his break. I said “good morning” to him. He stopped me and said nobody ever did that before. He went on and on about how happy he was I said “good morning.”
So, yes, Jews being nice to each other apparently is amazing!
YW Moderator-77MemberAnd? Just kidding.
Verbiage.
And it took me a minute to get “hypothesis.”
YW Moderator-77MemberAnd if the vgbaerie is emeeltxry ecsievsxe and ofcsabuetd?
YW Moderator-77MemberThis thread is going to deteriorate rather quickly.
You’re right. It did.
Why don’t we just blame the whole thing on dov hikind and close the thread.
Don’t know about the first suggestion, but the second one was good.

YW Moderator-77Memberplaid and oomis1105: It’s nice to know there are some other “dinosaurs” here who have heard of the song.
YW Moderator-77MemberThere’s an old song (before my time) called “Chatanooga Choo-choo.” The first line (I think it’s the first line) is “Pardon me boy, is that the Chatanooga choo-choo?”
YW Moderator-77MemberAn oldie, but a goodie:
Roy Rogers and Dale Evans had recently bought some shoes. One day they left them outside, so as not to track mud in the house. During the night a mountain lion wandered into their yard and chewed up the shoes. The next day Roy went out with his shotgun in search of the lion. Dale heard a shot and ran out to see what happened. She saw Roy holding his gun and standing over the body of a lion.
She said, “Pardon me Roy, is that the cat that chewed the new shoes?”
(If any of the young’uns on this board don’t get it, let me know and I’ll explain.)

YW Moderator-77Membermost people follow the minhag of the chosson and kallah not seeing each other for a week before the wedding.
A friend told me her father-in-law (a photographer) used to love to work at Sephardi weddings because they didn’t have that minhag and he could get all the formal pictures done in advance.

YW Moderator-77MemberI was just listening to a shiur by Rabbi Dr. Akiva Tatz in his series on Medical Halacha. (You can Google it.) The title was “Dangerous Therapy – Risks in Medicine & Surgery.” Among other subject, he discusses vaccinations. Although this shiur is not recent enough to discuss H1N1, he does discuss other vaccines which are thought by many to be dangerous. And he quotes Rabbi Elyashiv as paskening that one has to vaccinate.
YW Moderator-77Memberand to have someone else hold the password
In one family I know, the husband and wife each know half the password, so both have to be present to use the internet.
YW Moderator-77MemberMore stuff I discovered: According to a web site about names, Shprintza is “possibly” from Esperanza which means “hope” (as Bear said) and Esperanza comes from the late Latin Sperantia.
I can easily imagine Sperantia turning into Shprintza. Interestingly, Shpresa is an Albanian name meaning hope.
YW Moderator-77MemberShprintza is the Yiddish word for the season Spring.
Do you mean shprinzin for spring?
In any case I think friling is more common for spring in Yiddish.
When all else fails, look it up! I just did. There are two words for Spring (the season): friling and vesne.
There are three words for spring (the kind in your pen for example): sprenzhine, sprunzhine, and spruzhine. (I don’t speak Yiddish, but since they are so similar, I’m guessing the difference is regional.)
There is also spring (source): kval, and spring (awaken etc.): oyfkumen.

And tzippi, what you said in your post, especially with the memory of newsreel I saw of soldiers running to the Kosel after the Six Day War, reminded me of my first trip to EY. In those days there weren’t “tv” screens at every seat. Everybody watched the same movie. After the movie, there was some documentary-type thing about EY. There was a scene where they took down the British flag and raised the Israeli flag. Even thinking about that scene makes tears pour down my face.
YW Moderator-77MemberBear: I don’t know, but I’m really hoping those aren’t numbers from a uniform such as worn in the federal Kollel.
