Just remember not to be insulting. Shaming a person (even a female) is a serious Aveirah.

I think popa_bar_abba would disagree with this because he holds women aren’t Jewish so there is no issur to shame them. This is also why it is assur to say Good Shabbos to them because you are in essence saying Good Shabbos to a non-Jew

I sometimes allow birds to sleep on my roof. And you certainly qualify as one strange bird. Was there a Starbucks on your friend’s roof? A television?

I davened mincha in a shul in chicago yesterday. There were a whole bunch of pushkas and plates on the table for people to give money for kapparos. I see some people put a quarter in each box, some put a dollar in each, then popa walked in and put a headless chicken in each. I thought that was bloody brilliant!

True. Eiruv tavshilin is probably on of the hardest things to remember because of all the other yom tov preparation going on and because it is not part of the usual yom tov preparations that we go through several times per year it can be easily overlooked. In today’s day where many people have smartphones to receive real-time email notification, this is a very useful service.

I didn’t say it last night. For that matter, I didn’t say any selichos last night (other than slach lanu in maariv). But I did pray selichos in the morning before shacharis. Does that make me a heretic that I decided I was too tired to follow that minhag and rather davened in the morning when I was able to concentrate better?

People in today’s world are so distracted by everything around them (such as the CR) that they can no longer remember to do basic mitzvos. if there’s one thing we can work on this Yomim Noraim season, it is Focus.

I heard an interesting pshat in eishes yifas to’ar, that it seems a strange thing for Hashem to just randomly matir something just because it is a hard nisayon. The answer is that during a war, the avoda of the people fighting is to concentrate completely on the war which means that you can’t focus properly on overcoming the yetzer hara. But, in most other non-war circumstances, we are required to constantly focus on beating the yetzer hara.

I guess the heavier bag is a bigger tircha for the baggage handler.

Still, I was always of the opinion that each passenger should have to stand on a scale with all of their bags, both checked and carry-on, and be charged by weight accordingly…

T613, I have been complaining about that for years. I often travel with a bag that is close to and sometimes slightly above 50 lbs. I can theoretically put a bunch of the stuff in my carry-on but then I have to shlep it around. It’s the same weight either way so shouldn’t make a difference to the airlines. Adaraba, they should be happier if I put most of the stuff in the overweight bag so that there is more room in the overhead. The bag takes up the same amount of space either way.

I usually take off my stilettos before shmona esrei of mussaf because it is very uncomfortable to stand in them through a 42 minute shmona esrei.

Popa wears his through shmona esrei because otherwise he is too short to see the machzor on his shtender.

in reply to: Why should I be proud to be Jewish? #971289

I always wondered why it is that people feel pride when a local sports team wins. I’m not talking about big fans, but people who might not even be able to name one player on the team. For example, if a little league team from Brooklyn goes to the Little League World Series, everybody in Brooklyn, and even throughout NY, is so proud of them even though they had never even known of their existence until now. But when they hear that this “local” team won, they feel pride. This seems to be a natural thing that people feel a connection to the people who they have some sort of “shaychus” to. This shaychus can be that they live in the same city or country (olympics) or it could be that they are somehow “related”. That same pride can be felt about “family” even if it is family that you’ve never met. And all Jews are “family”.

This doesn’t have anything to do with Judaism itself, it is just a natural feeling. Once a person has that feeling you can try to use it to bring them closer to the religious part of the religion.

On a different but related point, nowadays, many men (I’m not sure about women) have stopped wearing wrist watches because they are always checking their cell phones. So it has now become basically a “beged Shabbos” for these people although not necessarily because it is a fancy piece of jewelry. I wonder if this somehow affects the halacha regarding carrying.

With all due respect to Rav Kanievsky, I don’t understand this supposed psak.

He is supposedly quoting the Chazon Ish who lived many years ago. Fashions change with time. I understand that in the Chazon Ish’s time, men wore pocket watches and women wore wrist watches; but nowadays, almost nobody wears a pocket watch and wrist watches are a normal thing for both men and women to wear (at least here in America). In fact, one of the gifts that a kalla “traditionally” gives her chosson is a fancy watch. So unless you hold that lo yilbash is based on what they wore at the time of Moshe Rabeinu, I can’t hear any svara for watches to be a problem (unless you are making a gezeira because of Shabbos but that is very different than lo yilbash).

The houses actually cost an arm, a leg, and a few teeth which is why you need a good dentist ^_^

And I didn’t say that the Presidentt went to Cambridge I I said he went to University near Cambridge – an area which includes Harvard, MIT, BU, Brandeis, etc. The University of New Hampshire can even be called “near Cambridge” depending on how near you call near. Outside of NY, you can be more than daled amos away and be considered “near”.

    YW Moderator-42

Can someone give an example other then eggs of something that is definitely davar shebiminyan?

I can hear a svara that eggs are not davar shebiminyan because the fact that they are sold in dozens rather than pounds is for convenience sake. Eggs are fragile and therefore need to be sold in special containers that are shaped specially for them and these containers happen to have 12 slots (or 30 etc.). So when you buy “a dozen” eggs you can say a svara that it is as if you are buying a pound. (The fact that Europe switched to selling by the pound might over turn this svara though)

Seeing a bachelor in their 60’s & 70’s still not wearing a Tallis is so sad, not to mention how humiliating it must be for them to parade their celibacy.

I think I once heard that this is the reason why men don’t wear a tallis until they are married – it is to make them aware that they are missing something and encourage them to get married.
