All chasidim have beards. They get whiter as they grow older.

“Shut up” is what popa_bar_abba says to YCT talmidot when they ask for smicha.

I think you should go around to all of your neighbors’ sedarim and eat a kezayis of matzah from each one just in case yours wasn’t kosher.

I remembered to say melech oheiv tzedaka umpishpat rather than hamelech hamishpat tonight.

I also remembered to say v’lamalshinim. I’ll let popa_bar_abba tell us about all the special kavanos one should have during that bracha.

If you accidentally started saying weekday shmoneh esrei at Mincha on 1st day of Pesach, and you get past bareich aleinu, normally you just finish the current bracha then say yom tov mincha. But here, you lechora said v’sein tal umatar so do you have to start over?

This might make a nafka mina of whether you are allowed to say v’sein bracha 90 times on Yom Tov or is it considered hachana.

This is only true if your spouse is her own Rabbi. Otherwise we generally go by the husband’s minhagim and halachik rulings.

Sfardim hold of bitul b’shishim on Pesach. Ashkenazim hold that it is batul b’shishim before Pesach but not on Pesach itself. Chozer v’neir is only by yavesh. By davar lach we say that it is batul before Pesach and stays batel. I think this is the reason R’ Eider gave why some people buy milk before Yom Tov.

Come to think of it, Davar Katan’s answer doesn’t answer my question. My premise was that we rely on bittul before Pesach for milk but not other things. So my question would stand, why are we makpid on bittul for other things and not milk/eggs?

Sam2 seems to answer this by saying that the milk and egg issue has nothing to do with bittul b’shishim.

I’m still not sure why it is that we don’t rely on shishim before Yom Tov but I guess that’s stam a chumra.

Davr katan wrote: “Bitul issur lichatchila, not shishim, davar hamaamad, nosein taam. need I go on. people don’t buy things to be mivatel them on purpose, it’s a chumra.”

Perhaps yogurt was a bad example for this question because of davar hamamad. I can’t think of a good example off-hand but any item where you can tell based on common sense and ingredients that there is no chametz more than shishim. Basically if you have something that has no chometz in it but is made in a plant that also makes chametz, the kashrus agencies won’t give it a pesach hashgacha. But limaysa, the only real chashash there is that a mashehu of chametz from another product will get in. Since nobody wants it there, it should not be an issue of being mivatel issur lichatchila. So why can’t you buy it before Pesach and rely on the bittul?

“people don’t buy things to be mivatel them on purpose, it’s a chumra.”

I guess that’s the answer I was looking for. There seems to be this inyan of being overly machmir when it comes to Pesach.

So basically popa is saying that many girls aren’t married because boys are mean? #hadtosayit

About the bas kol: is this bas kol by every child? Male and female? For some reason I always understood “bas ploni l’ploni” as bas ploni is meant to marry the male ploni who is about to be born. Meaning it is being said about a boy about to be born, not a girl. Now that I think of it, it can probably be read both ways.

You seem to be equating airline miles with amex points. Even if the airlines don’t allow you to sell miles, what is stopping you from transferring your amex points into someone else’s airline account? You aren’t selling airline miles, you are selling points that happen to turn into miles. (Though if airlines have rules against this I assume amex does as well).

That being said, it seems to me that a lot of people are doing this business nowadays. The airlines aren’t dumb, they most probably know that it is going on and are allowing it to happen. From a technical standpoint it shouldn’t be that hard for them to detect it with all the technology nowadays. If they wanted to stop it, they most probably would.

I haven’t seen the movie but from reading this thread I would say that fluffy slippers are not a problem but Achasveirosh having a stomach ache is. I always wondered, did Bigson and Seresh really use a poisonous snake? Or did they stam try to poison him and the snake part was possibly made up. Also, was Seresh really Bigson’s boss?

Another point: If I were a kid, I think it would be better for me to be known by Daas Yochid then poppa bar abba 🙂

Interesting. That is the same phrase as in Yedid Nefesh. But in Tehilim it is not the end of a sentence like in Yedid Nefesh and Devorim. Though Devorim is a different form of the word.

The rhyming scheme is an interesting “proof” of how it should be read but there are some piyyutim (in slichos I think) where the Artscroll tells us to pronounce it as the correct Hebrew rather than in the form of the poem so this is not necessarily a solid proof.

    Yishaya 58:7 “umibb’sar’cha lo sis’allom”.

    Similar thing:

In the beginning of kaddish some use the Hebrew pronunciation of “yisgadeil v’yiskadeish” while others say the Aramaic pronunciation of “yisgadal v’yiskadash”.

Spoiled Brooklyn and Lakewood people think that a 4 minute drive to a store is a huge chisaron. The bigger chisaron is the commute to work for those who work in NY or NJ. The other chisaron is getting snowed in during big blizzards such as when they gor 3 feet of snow one Shabbos a few years ago.

Otherwise, it is a beautiful community, great people, great shul, great Rav, and very affordable.

I was always bothered by the fact that many people say mezonos on pizza. The situations in which I see people doing this almost always look like kivious seuda to me.

One specific story that really bothered me was when a certain guy refused to eat a vegetable slice because he thought there might be bugs in the vegetables, yet he ate 2 regular slices without washing when he was clearly sitting down to lunch.

Perhaps Oomis’s doctor meant that using Silvadine would help reduce pain in the long term. But, since Oomis understood it as immediate, it worked via a combination of placebo effect and vasaline effect.

The difference I see between silvadine and bacitracin is that Bacitracin is thicker (I think this is the difference between an ointment and a cream). The thicker ointment keeps it covered better but also does not let it breathe as well. Silvadine is also easier to spread on the painful skin because it isn’t as thick.

The Mesilas Yesharim also states “the obvious”. But as the author mentions in the introduction, sometimes it is necessary to restate the obvious over and over.

I am also wondering what the first sentence has to do with the rest of the OP.
