I didn’t see it this year but I remember the music from previous years being very moving. Gets you into the spirit of the day. Music in the 3 weeks is only assur if it live or gets you to dance, although many of us are machmir and won’t listen to any music during the 3 weeks there are poskim who even mattir any acapela or recorded music so certainly moving acapela should be fine in this situation. Like kapusta said, I assume they asked a shaila.

Aries, I think the point is to have a mature, articulate discussion without everybody putting in their two cents to pretend to be a kannoi. I don’t see any problem with that, it sounds much better than the previous discussions. No need for people to scream for it to be shut down.

I don’t see why it has to be just one person from each side, I wouldn’t mind if Feif Un, Charliehall, cantoresq, and SJSinNYC all represent their side.

As long as it is a bunch of civil people who knwo how to debate and listen properly it could be a great discussion.

It seems that they are not available to watch online. But are these available for purchase online?

I was thinking of the pros and cons of having them online. On the one hand many more people would be able to watch. But on the other hand there is something to the experience of watching it together with many others in a shul and if it was available online many people wouldn’t go.

Ayc, perhaps you are correct. In today’s generation everything is laitzanus. After each of the tragedies of the past few weeks I have heard jokes made about the situation. People try to justify it by saying they are making fun of the rasha who committed the crime but the whole lifestyle of laitzanus leads to such things as people calling each other dolts for no reason. They think it’s funny. Whether it is funny or not seems to be a matter of opinion.

In terms of the other issues you had, namely TV and movies. I wasn’t following those discussions so closely but the way I understood it was a way of understanding who our fellow CRers are. Although we all call ourselves Yeshivish or at least we consider ourselves the type to frequent a Yeshivish site, there are still many amoung us who do or have been involved with TV or movies. It is a nisayon that some people have and the concept is something that can be discussed in the CR. To start discussing specific shows or scenes might not be appropriate for the CR but to discuss in general whether or not we watch and the hashkafos behind it is a different story.

If you are going to say that this is Yeshiva World and therefore TV should automatically be given a blanket issur then with that line of thinking Internet should be in the same boat and the site shouldn’t exist at all. The very existence of this site and the fact that we all read it shows that these issues are not black and white and are something to be discussed.

Aries, thank you for your reasoned input.

Observanteen, whether or not to use goyish music to attain closeness to Hashem is a matter of opinion. It is not a black and white issue and is definitely not something that should automatically be banned from the CR. If one can truly acheive such a thing in a Kosher fashion than I think even you would agree that it is not just ok but it is a very good thing to do. The machlokes here is whether it is possible to have Kosher goyish music. You are a teenager and most of the goyish music you know of is probably more contemporary which makes it less likely to be Kosher. Gedolim of the past have listened to goyish music. There is goyish music out there that might be completely Kosher according to popa_bar_abbas interpretation. Like I said, it is not an obviously bad thing and therefore it is a matter that is fit for discussion in the CR. If people started posting examples of actual vulgar lyrics that wouldn’t make it through but to discuss the concept is fine in my opinion. I hope I have explained this to your satisfaction.

I never understood why people make such a big deal out of these Anti-virus programs. I have used Microsoft Security Essentials as well as AVG which are both very good and very free. Why would anyone pay for something like McAfee or Norton. I think they are all a rip off considering the free ones that are available. I understand that the ones listed are free after rebate but why hock with a rebate and as ICOT mentioned, they will get u for a renewal in a year. I have also found some of these programs to be annoying and slow down the computer. AVG doesn’t seem to do that. It just quietly runs in the background.

    An earlier post from popa_bar_abba:

80: You are slandering me based on deleted posts which you claim.

People: What can I say. He is not me. I don’t do alternate names.

I have confirmed this. See my edit in the post above – YW Mod

No that was not pba impersonating a mod, it was Mod-42 impersonating himself. And thank you Mod 80 for admitting to it. Sorry for all the trouble last night. I should have posted in my own post rather than as an edit that might look like an impersonation.
