I am not from Chicago, though I visited a few times. When I was there, I saw this guy with a black fedora in shul, was that you popa? Or were you the guy eating the Burger Buddy at the table next to me in Great Chicago? Or were you the guy shoveling the snow in front of the kollel?

Moshe was told by Hashem to go down because B’nei Yisrael had built an egel. He didn’t “beleive” Hashem until he actually saw it for himself so as not to be mekabel lashon hara. Once he saw it with his own eyes he broke the luchos

I heard a similar story where he came late to Kol Nidrei and he said that he had heard a Jew crying from hunger so stopped to feed him.

If your laptop doesn’t have a number pad you can use the one within the regular keyboard when num lock is on.

You can also use the “character map” under the start menu under accessories.

I was in the supermarket the other day trying to decide between two boxes of cereal and I decided to pick the one that did not have pritzus on it. Leka darka achrina is a very hard thing to pasken. On the one hand, we are allowed to live “normal” lives, on the other hand, if something is not necessary and causes an issur, it is assur. Defining “necessary” is the hardest part. In this particular case I really couldn’t care less which cereal to choose so I chose the one without pritzus. But what if I davka wanted that one, am I allowed to buy it or am I mechuyav to pass on it since there are other choices even though I don’t like the other choices as much? What if I have a child screaming for the other one?

Another story that comes to mind is a friend of mine was giving somebody driving directions. He mentioned that the fastest way was to take a certain road but that road has some bad billboards so he suggests taking a different route even though it could add a few minutes to the drive. This really struck me because I always wonder why people are in such a rush when driving. I see people swerving between lanes and wonder how much time they actually save and what risk they are putting themselves and others into to save a few minutes and often they will hit traffic down the road and not save any time anyway. In this case, the person was davka suggesting to add a few minutes to the drive to avoid pritzus. Those people who are always in a hurry would never think of this and even after hearing the reason might scoff and say that it is an extra, unnecessary, holier-than thou, chumra. But is it? There is a halacha of leka darcka achrina and here there is clearly another derech. Does the extra few minutes take away it’s status as a daarka achrina? Every case is different but it is… something to think about. (Sorry Rabbi Salomon I had to do that)

I don’t find any problem with it. Just smile and say “Amen”, you are receiving a bracha. I was always taught not to take a bracha lightly even a “birchas hedyot”. Even a “hedyot” has the power to give brachos, especially at a time when he is in the middle of doing a mitzvah (simchas chossen vkalla). Always answer Amen when someone gives you or someone else a bracha.

In terms of actually saying “IY’H by you”, If everyone would look at it this way it would be fine. But limayseh many people are hurt by it so perhaps it’s not a good thing.

That reminds me of the guy who said he would rather die peacefully in his sleep like his grandfather, not screaming in terror like his passengers.

And about your comment about not driving, that’s all great if u live in Brooklyn where u have a shul, school, kosher supermarket, etc all within a block of where you live. If you live in “the suburbs” it just isn’t practical not to drive.

Many (if not all) nisyonos in this world would not be nisyonos at all if we could see the big picture in front of us. I don’t stick my hand in a fire because I know it will hurt immediately. Some people have the self-control to understand that even though smoking might not hurt them immediately, it will hurt them when they get older. some people see the same when it comes to aveiros. Aveiros are a lot harder because the damage we are doing is to our spiritual self, and our physicality blocks us from seeing this clearly. So yes, there is din v’chshbon, but don’t make a blanket statement that all non-smokers have self-control and will therefore be held more accountable for their aveiros. Hashem is the ultimate fair, honest judge who knows everything that goes on in a person’s life and everyone will be judged based on their situation.

But if you want to use this case of smokers as chizuk to stop yourself from sinning, kol hakavod!

Why should someone carry a mincha-maariv with them when they have a blackberry/iphone/etc that they can daven from?

With the little mincha/maariv’s you have to worry about bringing them into bathrooms etc. Phones are a lot easier. And it’s the same davening they are reading from the phone then from the printed siddur so what’s the problem? (They should turn off the network though so that they don’t get calls while trying to daven)

Mother101, if someone is not going to buy it because it looks funny, I don’t think that it matters whether they read it here in the CR. On the other hand, some people might not have known about them and will now buy. In many cases like these, any publicity is good publicity.

I agree with popa, complimenting a name is somewhat unusual for a first meeting. Perhaps he had never heard of a name like yours before. Is he perhaps ashkenazi and you have a sfardi name or something? Or stam you have an unusual name?

If I met a girl for the first time and she was wearing a large basket of fruit on her head and I complimented her for it, would I be out of line?

Bar Shattya, with 31 games left the Cubs are 57-74, 20.5 games behind the 78-54 Brewers. So if the Cubs finish 26-5 whille the Brewers finish 5-25 they would end up tied. So yes there is still a chance. Go Cubbies!

I actually un-stickied it as an experiment to see if there are people who don’t notice the sticky threads. By un-stickying it after a new post it goes into the regular thread of threads. I’ll put it back up when it’s close to falling off the page.
