Which Roshei Yeshiva say it’s not assur to start smoking?

I understand the concept of teenagers and addictions so that explains why the Roshei Yeshiva put up with it (and might even do it themselves) but I don’t know of any RY who would say it is muttar to start.

That’s a moot point as any R”Y who smokes probably started many years ago before the dangers were so well known.

Sounds like you are asking for the answer to a specific question. There is a concept of goral haGra and other types of things like that but you probably have to be on the right level for those to work. Ask your LOR before trying something like that.

If you feel that you need a sign to help your emuna, here is a story about that. Correct me if I’m wrong, I might have some of the details wrong. I think it was about R’ Yisrael Salanter.

The Rav went to an inn that he had been to a few times and saw that the innkeeper was no longer frum. He asked him what happened. The innkeeper told him a story about someone who had tested Hashem by purposefully doing an aveira and asking Hashem to smite him down for it. The man was not immediately struck down and this affected the innkeeper’s emuna.

Later on, the innkeeper’s daughter came home and showed them a certificate she had won for being a great singer. R’ Yisrael asked her if she could demonstrate her great ability. She was shy and refused, when he pushed her to prove her ability she said “why must I prove it to you, I have this certificate and that should be proof enough”.

The Rav turned to the father and explained — Hashem doesn’t need to prove to us His power, the Torah is His certificate. The Torah tells the story of Yetzias Mitzrayim which shows all of Hashem’s powers. We tell it over at the seder every year to remind ourselves of its truth. We don’t need our own miracles until such time as Hashem decides to show himself again at the time of the final geula.

That being said, if you pay close attention you will realize that everything that happens in life is its own small miracle. We make 100 brachos every day, thanking and praising Hashem for the daily miracles he performs for us.

To bring in another side: I know a nice, good ben-Torah who has been trying to stop smoking for many years now. When he started dating, he stopped; when he got married, he stopped; when he had his first child, he stopped… As you can see, he knows the dangers yet can’t help himself. How/why he started in the first place I don’t know, but he is now a big talmid chacham and ben-Torah, although he still sometimes smokes. His wife was very against the smoking thing when they got married and still is, yet they got married.

Being overweight can harm you too. For many overweight people it is just as hard to become healthy as it is for a smoker to stop, in other words – they just can’t do it.

If I were a girl, I would rather marry a guy who works and doesn’t smoke then a yeshiva guy who smokes. Yes, there are always exceptions but most guys who smoke are not the “good bochurim” who you want to marry.

I have major taynas against anybody who started smoking in the last 20 years. I think it is a major tayna against them, either their upbringing, self-control, intelligence, etc or a combination of those factors.

And I love how yoyo said she knows someone who stopped many times! ROTFL!

I think boys should be required to stop smoking for a full year before being allowed to date. And for every time they cheat an extra month should be added to that freezer so if a guy cheats and smokes during that year he now has to wait 13 months…

You say this is the “only issue”. I think anybody in the shidduch parsha who smokes has a much bigger issue. Why did he start in the first place? It has been known for years that smoking is addictive and dangerous. The fact that he started in the first place should raise red flags about him.

Peer pressure? That’s not an answer, just another red flag. It means he might fall to peer pressure about other issues later on.

The $150,000+ being spent on this event could:

    – raise awareness about a very important issue.

    – begin the process of solving the issue.

If done right it will be money well spent.

in reply to: Listening To Non-Live Music On Sefira #1151846
    YW Moderator-42

If the alternative is not exercising then it is probably assur not to listen.

Side point: you say “it is difficult”. Many things in life are difficult. Lifum tzara agra. Hashem put us on this world to pass nisyonos. So just because something is difficult shouldn’t be a reason to go “looking for a heter”. Kol kula tzricha bdika. Take a step back and think about it before jumping to heterim.

When it comes to this particular question of music during sefira / 3 weeks in general (not for exercise), this always bothers me. I enjoy music, but I won’t die without it. I realize that chazal instituted a period of aveilus and it should be taken seriously. Think about the “spirit of the law”, rather than “the letter of the law”. It is probably better to listen to a slow, hertzidig D’veikus song then some of the acapela nowadays. I think the best thing is to listen to those type of songs without music or with only acapella music.

Of course, if you are lisheim shamayim and you really feel that you can’t exercise as well as you should without it, then by all means, find a heter. (Also, if you feel you need it to keep you awake while driving then of course you should listen to music)

Being a Mets fan on the other hand is a good mussar lesson in humility so that is a midas chasidus and is actually encouraged by most achronim.

Don’t ever tell anyone not to learn 12 hour every single day or not to do Bikur Cholim 12 hours every single day.

And don’t ever tell anyone being a fan of professional sports is not a negative.

If you see somebody learning 12 hours a day, that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Being a sports fan, is not necessarily a negative.

If you realize before saying Hashem’s name in “baruch ata Hashem mechayeh hameisim”, you go back to “ata gibor”. Otherwise you have to go back to beginning of shmona esrei.

For v’sein bracha, iff you rememberr before Hashem’s name then go back to “v’sein bracha”, otherwise go back to begining of bareich aleinu. If you said “y’hyu l’ratzon”, you have to go back to begining of shmona esrei.
