YW Moderator-42ModeratorMany people don’t know how to phrase what they want to say in a nice way. They usually mean well but come out insensitive. That being said, I hope this comes out ok.
I think that the mashal your family member was using is wrong but the message is correct. What she was saying is that at this point in your life you should learn to accept your problems for what they are and try to make the best of your situation. Everybody has their own sets of problems, some people went through the holocaust, others might have a stomach ache. But to each person, Hashem gives their own nisyonos for them to make the most of. Hashem doesn’t give you more than you can handle. Try to look at the bright side of life. Think of all the good that Hashem has given you and focus on that and let that affect your mood and the way you go about your day. Try thinking about all the random people in your life and what kinds of problems they have that you don’t and think about how they handle them and how it would be if you had those problems instead of your own. Also, you can think about the temporary problems that you have had over the course of your lifw and how hard they were and how good it is now that those are gone (something like a stomach ache, flu, etc). Imagine if these things were permanant and how that would make your life so much more unbearable than it is. Thank Hashem for the good that you have that those are not permanent and be happy with what you have.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorIf you think Baltimore is creepy, check out Brooklyn. ^_^
YW Moderator-42ModeratorI think that the general daas of husbands davening kabalas Shabbos early is not to be mikabel Shabbos for their wife so the wife can light as late as she wants (up to shkia)
When there is only one shul in the town and that shul is being mekabel Shabbos early then it might be more problematic. But in Brooklyn where there are 42 shuls on every block each starting a different time it shouldn’t be an issue.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorI read that years ago and don’t remember much. Something about rhyme and reason was in there. And jumping to Conclusions. I was told I should reread it as I might actually understand it now that I’m a few years older.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorNo gefen, first I sepnt 18 years in yeshivaa after which there was 12 years of 24/6 studying at the Eastern Mod University.

YW Moderator-42ModeratorDaas Yachid, I don’t think you need to download an app lock. There is a restrictions section in the settings that has its own password. From there you can restrict new apps, turn off safari, youtube, etc.

YW Moderator-42Moderator“There is no chazal that considers your inability to cool off comparable to death.”
Chazal compare losing ones money to death as well. If someone who used to afford a swimming pool now can’t, we are mechuyav to give him tzedaka. That is “day machsoro”
“Not only do some executives of charities derive huge salaries, but so do some of the fund raisers themselves. The average meshulach can take 50% of the donation as his pay. That is why they work so hard to obtain larger donations. (Not a bad incentive.)”
If the incentive helps them raise more money why not? The meshulach needs a parnasa too.
“Some drivers that shuttle meshulachim around some frum neighborhoods are also greedy and take a percentage of the till.”
Greedy? They should do it for free? Again, being a driver is a parnasa as well. If his way of charging is by percentage so be it. Those drivers will try extra hard to get you a lot. incentives are part of business and completely muttar.
“It is true that not every dollar given to a fundraiser reaches its target; some goes to pay the collector and the expenses of the process.”
Expenses are part of life. If a Yeshivas Lilmod Ul’lamed sends out a meshulach to collect for them, what is he collecting for? For the yeshiva’s expenses! Fundraising expenses are part of a tzedakas expenses just like their electricity bill. Obviously it should be done with seichel and not be excessive as you said, but when done correctly, the more you spend the more you get back.
Side note, I know of some people who will davka not give to a meshulach/fundraiser but will take note of the organization and give separately so as not to cost them the percentage that goes to the fundraiser. I think this might actually be a chashash gezel from the fundraiser who put in the work to get you to donate and doesn’t get his cut because you are circumventing him.

YW Moderator-42ModeratorCan somebody in Israel post on the CR motzaei Shabbos if the post is being recorded on a server located in the US on Shabbos? Same question would apply to email, if my email is located on a server in California (Google) can I use it during the first 3 hours after Shabbos is NY, it is “writing” to a server on Shabbos.

YW Moderator-42ModeratorBasic religious compatibility will often be known before the first date but during the dating you have to get a more specific idea of whether you really are religiously compatible.
These kinds of things can come out naturally during discussions on the first date. On the 2nd and 3rd dates you might want to go into more of an “interrogation mode” but if it can be brought up naturally that might be less awkward. Obviously you both know that this is a shidduch date so it’s not such a big deal by the 2nd or 3rd date to be discussing it outwardly.
In terms of the discussion, it should be exactly that – a discussion and not a yes/no interrogation. Often people will have a question like “do you watch movies” and will immediately passul based on the yes/no answer. If you would discuss why, when, what etc you can get a better idea of what the person really holds and how willing they are to compromise after marriage. If you are already on a 3rd date and like the person, it is worth your time to put the effort into those discussions before breaking up. I’m not saying you should compromise your own religious level but rather that the answer that the other person gave might not be what it seems.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorOpenDNS on the router is a start. If there are any open wifi networks that do not go through your router available in the office try to have them blocked.
You can install something like WebChaver on each computer to monitor what each person does.
An admin can often watch any computer as well using something like Remote Desktop.
Having all computers face the open office can be helpful but is not always practical, especially if you have some employees dealing with sensitive data that others shouldn’t be seeing. In that case, you can try to arrange the office in a way that at least one other employee can see that screen. All depends on the layout of the office of course.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorA google search brought up something called jnet mobile for blackberry filtering though the site doesn’t currently seem to be working for me. (The posts I found were from 2008 so it could be it no longer exists) According to some old blackberry forums I found, it sounds like it is for people with BIS who connect to jnet’s BES network which filters content. Anybody who uses their own company’s BES would have to have the company set up filtering for them.
There are apps that will block the browser all together as well. (Appblock)
There was a big pdf going around that was given out at the Flatbush asifa that probably discusses this issue. I haven’t read through the PDF yet. If not, call TAG and they might advise you.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorYou can sort of fiilter an iphone. There are parental controls that can be set and only changed with a password, as long as the user doesn’t have the password he can’t override it (actually he can if he really knows what he’s doing but it is not easy). With parental controls you can turn off safari (the browser) as well as other things such as the itunes store, the ability to install and delete apps, etc. There is also a k9 app that can be used in place of the disabled safari if you feel that the iphone needs some internet access.
June 11, 2012 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm in reply to: Need MacBook Pro 15" fact to return lost laptop #879152YW Moderator-42ModeratorIs there a filter on it? If not it might be lifnei iver to return it…
YW Moderator-42ModeratorNo. I did not mean to equate those, was trying to make a point that they are different.
Health – that is my point as well, people seem to think that supporting Torah is the most important thing to do with their money. It is certainly a great thing, but whether it should be the priority over other chasadim is a big shaila.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorRandom side note: The comment about the pool reminds me of a thread about whether it is proper for a young couple to buy a new house if it means in the future their kids will have to be on scholarship because of their mortgage while another couple who rented a smaller house/apartment will never be able to get a big house because they “missed the boat” by not getting into financial difficulties earlier.
We live in a generation of entitlement. Every kid is entitled to a Jewish education whether they can afford it or not, every couple is entitled to infertility treatment if they R”L need it, every kollel couple is entitled to expensive life-styles at their in-laws expense.
Everything cost money and there is limited funds within the frum community. Everyone is fighting for each others tzedaka dollars.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorHow about Chai Lifeline, do you feel it is unimportant for your tzedaka dollars to go toward kids with cancer going to summer camp? If they can’t afford it should they stay home and suffer?
Everyone needs to make their own decisions (with the help of their Rav) about what “tzedakos” to give to. I think the OP might be under the impression that “hachzakos haTorah” is the most worthy tzedaka, this would only include shuls, schools, yeshivos, and kiruv but would not inlcude things like tomchei shabbos, chai lifeline, bonei olam, hatzalah, etc

YW Moderator-42ModeratorIf a kohain has a shayla about the avoda, will he post it in the CR?
Will there be no need for mods?
I assume that a lot of technology will be used. The accounting system for the minchas, etc will all be computerized. The Beis Din HaGadol will use the Internet and Bar Ilan-type software on their ipads for quick reference.

May 21, 2012 10:34 pm at 10:34 pm in reply to: with the asifa behind us, what will you do about it? #875669YW Moderator-42ModeratorIt was a great, inspiring event despite the fact that I didn’t understand much of the Yiddish and felt that many people left confused. This needs follow up. It was mentioned that each Rav needs to help his community deal with the Internet based on their own needs. The real sad part is that most of the people that really need the followup help, the explanation of exactly what should and shouldn’t be done, are looking to the Internet for it, and the ichud isn’t posting anything on the Internet. So everybody is left to get their opinions from the Lashon Hara blogs that exist to bash the Gedolim.
The Chofetz Chaim mentions on the mishna in Avos “???? ????? ?????? ???? ?????: ????, ????? ????–??? ????? ????; ????, ????? ????–??? ???? ????; ????, ?????–????; ?? ????, ??? ????–???.”
The Chofetz Chaim mentions that there is a 5th category of those who go in order to scoff. They get “schar” for going and “schar” for doing. In other words, they lose out on even the mitzvah of going because their going is for bad.
This is what the Lashon Hara bloggers do. Some went, some didn’t. Those who didn’t go got “reports” from those who did go. And they looked for anything they can find wrong with the event and with the message and then spewed their drivel about it online for all to see and for all to join them in their Chilul Shem Shamayim to counteract the great Kiddush Hashem that took place.
It is this stuff that is being read by those searching for answers, those who left the event confused about what exactly the message was and what they should and should not be doing. Unfortunately they then get sucked into the leitzanus.
What these people should be doing is going to their Rabbonim for hadracha. ??-????? ???? ????, ?????? ???? ??, ??????, ????? ??. Hopefully those who are mivakshei Hashem will do what is right.
May 21, 2012 10:07 pm at 10:07 pm in reply to: with the asifa behind us, what will you do about it? #875666YW Moderator-42ModeratorWhat I got out of it was an answer to The Wolf’s question. He mentioned somewhere that he works in an office with a professional IT department and that department doesn’t allow filters on the Internet. We now have an answer for him. He can now demand of his IT department to install a filter in order to conform with his religion. The same way they must let him take off for Shabbos and Yom Tov, they must give him a filter because it is a gezaira by the Gedolei Hador. As Rabbi Wachsman said, “vayihi biyeshurun melech…”. When 40,000 people get together it is an acknowledgment that there is a melech in Klal Yisrael and that melech must be listened to, when that melech makes a gezaira it is binding. It is no longer just a chumra, it is now a chiyuv just like Shabbos and kashrus. He can sue them for discrimination if they don’t comply.
May 21, 2012 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm in reply to: I have a problem with internet filters.(And I'm frum) #878384YW Moderator-42ModeratorEvery rule has exceptions and not every filter is the same. Use seichel. Get a filter that fits your needs. If you have a husband and/or children at home make separate accounts for them with different filters. They announced at the asifa that TAG is available for free to work with you to “kasher” your devices. It was mentioned that each person should work with their own Rav to make their own gedorim. There is no one size fits all. The message was to use a filter, the meaning of this is different for each person.
