Most people I know don’t sign tanaim until the night of the wedding so there would not be a problem to change the date.

Simchas chasan vkalla is a big inyan so if it’s a difference of having 10 people one day or 200 the next I assume it is better to push it off.

Public schools are closed. I assume some Queens schools might re-open wwhere there is power. Far Rockaway is less likely to re-open that soon. Call your school administrators to find out.

I figured out pshat. Mod 80 had his “website” in his profile set to the CR (everybody now has it set to link to their profile by default but he had it set to the main CR page). So Google picked up “Moderator-80” as the title of that link. I have changed his website to link to his profile.

People should not be on the road unless it is necessary. If you are driving, even in a place that is supposedly safe, use seichel and drive slower and with more caution than usual, especially at night.

The mayor said to use 911 for emergencies only (such as if you see someone selling a 16oz soda).

For things like downed traffic lights and trees, call or text 311.

The fact that Hashem is intimately involved in everything that happens is a basic of our belief. The fact that everything can be explained scientifically is part of the way Hashem created the world with a concept of tevah.

Yes, Monday Oct 29 was the 2nd Monday of BeHaB according to the normal American yeshivish calendars. As most of us should know by now, 147 follows his own, made-up calendar.

It stands for: Summer Educational Enrichment Development.

It is usually used to refer to high school or post-high school age boys and girls who go to out of town communities to run a camp/kiruv program. Sometimes it is for younger kids in which case it is more of a camp. Others are for older balebatim and baalei tshuva which is more like a bunch of shiurim.

Sorry, I’m just annoyed by people’s attitude toward raffles as if they really think they are going to win. I have no problem with people giving to mosdos and even buying a slight chance of winning something in the process, but be realistic and give for the sake of tzedaka.

My nerves are made of mithril, 95’s nerves are made of steel wool, and popa’s nerves are as strong as a wooden bench.

The short answer to your question is that we don’t know that the verdicts given in these cases were in fact correct, there are many facts pointing against the verdicts. Even if these people did do “something” wrong they were given unjust punishments and unjust appeal opportunities. As fellow Jews, we must help them.

Even if they did, in fact, do something wrong – “Keivan she’nikla, achicha hu…”. We don’t have to give them Shlishi when they get out of prison, but we must help them get out.

At $36 per ticket with an $18,000 prize, they have to sell at least 500 tickets to break even. And that’s if people buy the smallest package, if some of those 500 come from the bigger ticket packages they have to sell more than 500.

in reply to: Seminary raffle #900810
    YW Moderator-42
    Moderator

Ok, so a few hundred. Though depending on how much you are selling single and multiple tickets for, it could very well be over 1,000.

But either way, it’s still a long shot. This thread makes it sound like this is some awesome idea to raffle off a free year in seminary. I’m just pointing out that this has nothing to do with seminary, it is a raffle with a cash value to it, other institutions raffle off “a dining room set”,”an apartment in Israel”, $25,000, $100,000… It’s all the same thing, an incentive to give tzedaka. Give it as t2daka, not because you think you will win.

If you have a class of 50 Beis Yaakov 12th graders and you raffle it off among them – that’s another story.

So you have a one in a few thousand chance to get free seminary, only one person can win so don’t count on this as if YOU are going to be the winner. It is a raffle supporting a tzedaka like any other. If you want to use your masser money to give tzedaka to this particular institution, kol hakavod. Otherwise, support your local tzedakas or whatever you would normally put your maaser towards

Chessed or service. Call it what you want. Whatever it is, it cost them money to run. The shadchanim work there for free and should be paid by the couple upon a successful shiduch just like any other shadchan.

The mitzius is that people won’t pay for something if they can get it for free, hence the restrictions on free accounts, it is just a trial, if you like it, sign up for the paid version.

Think of it as a singles weekend where you have to pay, you are paying to cover the cost of the event, not the shadchanim.

It happens to be a great service and I think it would be great for the “shidduch crisis” if ALL singles signed up so that the shadchanim on the site can have more of a choice to choose from. (We’ll leave it to AZ to tell us at what age each gender should join).

AZ, ehrre did you get that from? I was under the impression that long term learners stay away from SYAS because it is “the Internet”.

I think the problem is that people consider SYAS a sort of last resort and won’t even sign up for it until they’ve been in shidduchim for awhile (I assume this is the Internet stigma or just the stigma of not dating in the “classic” fashion). Girls feel “old” sooner than boys so therefore the group of boys on the SYAS island is much smaller in number and older in age so the shidduchim being made have the same age gap problem as classic shidduchim.

WIY: YWN already does that, they have Divrei Torah articles every Friday.

Wisey: that empty space that you see is actually sometimes sold as advertising space for a lot of money. YWN cost money to run, they are a business not a chesed organization. Advertising space is worth a lot of money to them and they sell it when they can. Giving away ad space would destroy the whole business, why would a tzedaka pay money for ads if they can get it for free?
