Find a geshmake rebbe! Learning how to learn isnt done from reading, but from looking at how Torah shaped a person. Htazlacha!

    1. Some people eat matzah in the succah 1st night.

    2. Chag Haosef is a time when we gather in our grain (paychecks) and Pesach is a time when we pay taxes (tax season)!

    3. We do the same routine: eat, sleep, daven, read, learn…

Here is a dvar torah mix from my Rav, Guest speaker & Rebbe:

There are 2-4 mitzvos which you can do with your whole body: Succah, Yeshuv Eretz Yisroel (My Rav added Mikvah & Bias Bais Hamikdash because these arent actually mitzvos but its the way to get to it-hechsher). The lowest part of the body is the foot. The malbish (ornament) of the foot is the shoes. One is not all allowed to wear shoes in the BH”M. The question is: how can you wear shoes in the succah if it’s on the same level of the BH”M, is the succah more kodesh? The answer is in a way it is. Hashem wants us to be m’taher the whole guf!

The gemara says: “Usid HB”H lasos machul (circle) l’tzadikim”. Why a circle? Because in a circle, nobody is ahead of each other, we’re all together as 1 unit (achdus). So there is no greater way of showing this greatness than by dancing with your feet which have shoes on them in a circle on Simchas Torah!!!

May we have this in mind during hakafos & at other simchos as well & serve Hashem with kol gufo! Gut Shabbos & Moed!

I just heard the real reason why we wear non-leather all together! (Probably 5% of people know lol)

It’s because since Adam sinned on Rosh Hashana and after he realized he was “arum” and put on “chagoros” which is LEATHER belts (skirt), so we don’t want to remind ourselves from cheit (kitrug) and we dont wear them. My questions is, why is this done on Yom Kippur & not Rosh Hashana? Maybe bec its harder for 2 days than 1…

I have another pshat. If anyone is maskim let me know. We know from Moshe that Hashem told him to take off his shoes bec he was standing on holy ground. We also find that the Kohanim weren’t allowed to walk around in BH”M with shoes. So there is a thing about tumah from shoes & Yom Kippur were kadosh like a malach. But that only answers shoes all together, how about leather? So maybe I”ll stick to 1st pshat:)

I heard 2 stories first hand from a person who is around 35 & it happened with R’Elyashiv during his Eretz Yisrael year (go figure which year lol).

    1. It was Erev Succos 2 hours before Yom Tov and he was putting up a string succah & boarding it up with cardboard in order to hold it up in case of wind etc. R’Elyashiv was passing by on the way to Shul when he came across the scene and he stopped. R’Elayshiv asked him “What are you doing?” He replied “Im giving strength to the succah in case of wind/rain.” Without a flinch, R’Elyashiv paskened “Since between Pesach and Succos it’s a ruach sheina metzyua (abnormal wind) in Eretz Yisrael, it’s not necessary to put the cardboard on. Ironically, it rained Hoshana Rabah!

    2. Shmini Ateres that year (Simchas Torah for Eretz Yisrael), in the Meah Shearim Shtiebel (R’Elyashiv’s Shul) were 2 minyanim going on at the same time. One was laining V’zos Habracha (Eretz Yisrael) & upstairs was laining Aser T’aser (Chutz L’aretz). The shamash screamed “Tarta D’sasri!” (contradiction). His minyan continued, so the gabbai started hitting bal koreh with his shtreimel! He told the shamash (humorously) “lets go to the Rav!” Then he thought–oops! The both went to R’Elyashiv & he told over the story. Again R’Elyashiv gave a fast psak. He looked up & said firmly “It’s wrong to lain 2 different lainings in 1 shul AND it’s wrong to hit another yid. But such a Tarta D’sasri Hashem loves & I permit you to continue!!!

This was R’Elyashiv zt”l’s gadlus & pashut p’sakim with a vast Torah knowledge!

I hear many girls when speaking to a group of friends will say “guys”. I don’t see any problem with it or any hava amena for it to be wrong. It reminds me of how the shvartzas call themselves “niger”, despite the fact they hate if people call them by it. However, it is purely assur for one to call a name to someone who doesn’t like it!

I was zoche to hear his nightly gemara shiur 2 1/2 years ago. I remember he was saying on Perek Kol Hakeilim in Shabbos. I was so exhausted from ruuning around to all the yeshivos but when the “milchamtan shel torah” went on it was a sight to see! When the chashuve bale batim asked R’Elayashiv kashyos on the gemara with a bren, R’Elyashiv would simply reply back (in his calm voice) that its found on Daf 6b Rashi etc…

I was told by a mispallel in my shul how to get a bracha from him. He said, stand by the doorway where he leaves the shiur & ask his son if you can get a bracha. I did as he said, I asked his son “shayach bracha?” He replied “Lo achshav.” However, I felt the kedusha in his 4 aamos as he walked through the line of people!Aww oh well…Then R’Elyashiv got onto his golf cart to get driven home, people started chasing him to ask shaalos or get brochos. I couldn’t belive how you can bother a person who is 100 years old, let alone kavod hatorah?!

This was my experience with R’Elyashiv & I will never forget it. May R’Elyashiv zt”l be a meilitz yosher for gantz klal yisrael & may we be fortunate not to have to sit again on the floor this year & rejoice with the Binyan Bayis Shlishi! B’suros tovos!

This year there is a kulah, that since Tisha B’av is a nidcha, it is mutar m’ikur hadin to listen to music right after the fast but our minhag is to wait til the next morning (before chatzos). This applies to meat & wine as well, but everything else is mutar already after the fast.

Shira: You’re totally right! It’s combined talents.

As for composing stam: It used to be that the lyrics were made first, only then did the music chime in (Carlebach is the best example lol). Now, the music is the ikkur and the lyrics are the taful. That’s not real Jewish music, but some composers are able to get away with it and still sounds nice (idk about Fried but his stuff just keeps on getting better!)

I believe that a song is a real niggun when it can be sung at the Shabbos table. If not, then it’s lacking.

I’m curious to see what the olam says about my svarah…

I have too much to say!

    1. “The Shot Heard All Around the Country”: The best player on the Morris team (i think of all time) was Katzy. We were playing Heller and it was a back & forth game. It got down to the very end with a score of 58-56 Heller. Morris hit a 2 to tie it up. The place roared like you never heard it before. Can you imagine the sight of some of the Rabbeim at the game? well they were lol. So Heller was fouled and the hit both shots (shoot). Now with 6 seconds left, of course they pass the ball to Katzy & he went for a fade-away 3 pt & he swished it!!! Everyone in the gym jumped up with a victory cheer! Morris finally beat one of the good teams, but that was the last big victory of the All-Star Era…

    2. Ping-Pong is the main sport. I witnessed 2 famous guys who knows stocks etc were shmoozimng about stocks over a fast pace ping-pong game. I guess you can call them pros…

    3. The Morris Lawn. A place to learn with relaxation & feel geshmake breeze & gear up to get a hitch lol

    4. The Guesthouse. The 9 & 10th Grade bunkhouse. The head sleeps there so they don’t have much slack

The Ranch. The 11th Grade bunkhouse. They still have an OD.

The Doghouses. The 12th Grade bunkhouses No more OD! It consists of 2 rooms per bunkhouse with 4 beds in each room. Btw 1 of my friend’s room had a hole in floor so mice were invited lol.

The Barracks. The Bais Medrash bunkhouses. The place which Mesivta was dying for. Used mainly for grilling, playing chess, cards, reading Harry Potter (things in my days) & have nice rooms with 3 beds in each with good shower & quite spacious.

These are only a part of my memories & I’d like to hear others as well.

I can’t truly answer your question but what I could do is explain what a segualh is REALLY supposed to do.

For example (then you”ll chap easier), there is a segulah to have kavanah during bracha of “Al Netials Yadayim” to become rich. At face value, you say “oh wow so easy so lets strike it rich!” But then you dont see good results. Why? I did the segulah?

Well, I heard the real reason how it works & this is much harder:

If one will have kavanah in that bracha, he should focus on why he his washing. Because he is going to eat bread which is the food of man. Now, who sustains us? Hashem! So we’re thanking Hashem for providing us our food. If we would realize that what we have is enough (Someach b’chelko) then we would fill that Hashem gave us mamish what we need!

May we all do/think the emes what Chazal already instructed us becuase the segulahs are only once you chapped what Chazal means.

You asked the million $ question & it bothered me since 9/11!

I believe its a repeat of shibud mitzrayim “Nistimu Einei Yisrael”. We are so engrossed in the materialistic based & the natural course of events that we closed our eyes (nebach!) to all the calls. Most of us give a crechtz and say “Oy terrible tragedy” but it didn’t happen to me, I’m still alive….How could we?! It’s got to the point where it’s inevitable that by just moving on that things can change. Who are fooling? Ourselves!

Once we work on bain adam l’chaveiro, only then can we achieve bain admam l’makom b’shleimus-in its full state. May the Gadol Hador and all other cholim have a refuah shlaima, and if we treat our chaver properly (say Good morning!!!) only then can the geulah process begin!

Yea what happened to the good old days off to spend time with the grandparents or any other family orientated activity??? Why do we feel (really the kids) that we have to spend $$$ to enjoy vacation? Isn’t tuition high enough?

So we complain that we have to spend time with kids & spend. how can you complain where there are couples who don’t even have kids?

It’s all about looking at what we do with our kids in a positive light. if we can just pay attention to our kid’s needs & feelings and train them how a mentch should be (instead of texting & ignoring them) then they will follow in those good footsteps!

A wise man once said: Please don’t complain when kids are making noise in shul as much as we do because imagine if there were no kids…

Enjoy the vacation the way its meant to be:)

I was reading the above comments & I feel that people should definitely learn from a holy neshama like he had. I was around him from time to time in Chaim Berlin and Camp Morris.

Like sem20 said “Dovid was the perfect person to talk to when you needed to kill time, or to cheer yourself up”, but I did it for that and to give him chizuk. As was said, he NEVER showed any tzar from his inability to strive and think like others. Rather, he took every day at a time, thinking of how to make the world a better place. For those who know him from my yeshiva, you can usually find him in the coffee room having a geshmake schmooz before we went to seder. He always had a smile and said jokes to make people laugh which I think made him feel better. He was a chaver to many and a chizuk to all!

BDE. When I was in Camp Morris (his summer home for a number of years when i was there) he made a siyum on a Masechta on Gemara (I forgot which one)! The crowd that attended was overcome with emotion as he said the hadran. Everyone gave him mazel tov & we danced with him. It was an amazing simcha to see someone who worked on himself so much. It’s a major lesson to us who are able to grasp the torah easier, kol v’chomer how much we can accomplish!

May he be a meilitz yosher for his family, friends, and all of Klal Yisrael. Yehei Zichro Boruch.
