Yitayingwut- Regarding Kevisha- Where is the Taz you quoted? I remember kevisha assuring.

Jothar- I second your comment on the Maareches Hashulchan, although it is useful at times.

If you put cheese on top of pork and fried it, were you over ishul basar bechalav?- No. You are allowed to do that. YD 87:3

2 hours after eating meat you take a piece of milchig candy and make a bracha on it. now what?- I believe we say to lick the candy or take a small bite. (Not sure if you are allowed to swallow)

Sunday in July, at a bris. Somebody is about to have a bagel with cream cheese and lox, and his father says “we don’t do that”. Why?- Based on a possible Taus Sofer brought by Shach and Taz in YD 87:3.

mommamia22- Priority 1, Our Place and the like are for kids who are/were frum and are falling/have fallen off the derech. Kiruv organizations are for people who are not (yet) frum. Both types of organizations should know how to respond to someone that is in danger of intermarriage.

“If the only way I can become her friend is by telling her that I might do things she does which are against halacha, should I? Is that not hypocritical?”

Ask your LOR. Many Poskim say that when doing kiruv you are not to compromise on your morals and beliefs or say things that are not true. Lying to her about your opinion of movies is probably not the best idea.

In regards to music and movies, you can say that the same way there are ratings on movies to indicate what they deem as the appropriate age for a particular movie, so too in Yiddishkeit there are certain things that are deemed inappropriate for certain age groups and at certain points in life (premarital)

nitpicker- The “famous story” is probably the one that is in Igros Moshe.

Dr. Seuss- A girl under bat mitzvah can be married off by her father min haTorah and by her mother/brother mDirabannan.

2qwerty- As far as I know there is no kiddushin without eidim. (other than possibly a shtar written in his handwriting that she has in her possession)

mommamia22- That is part of the question. Generally we say “D’varim Shebilev Lo Havi Devarim” loosely translated as intent which contradicts the actions that we see are not taken into consideration.

    I did it once.

Imaofthree- Whether you like it or not, wake up to reality. Guys want a girl that is pretty. If he doesnt think so when he first meets her, he is not going to try to develop a relationship and hope love will be blind. Im not saying its right, but thats just the way it is and you will not be able to change it by complaining about it.

The prevalent minhag is to eat all but mezonos/hamotzi(hagufen?) outside of the sukkah, unless you are being koveya seuda. But ask you LOR.

    Syag Lchochma, HLM, & lovinghalacha-

As mdd pointed out there is a halacha of “ein podim shevuim yoser al kdei d’meihem” — “we do not redeem kidnapped people for more than a regular price”. One reason given is that if we do so it will only encourage additional kidnappings. The Gemora does NOT say ” Hashem controls everything…. If its not meant to happen it wont happen, etc… The pashtus haGemara goes entirely against that line of reasoning.

Unfortunately the most recent poll shows 41% of those polled want Obama to be reelected. So he has a fairly decent chance of winning reelection.

I like Perry, but as Goq said his poll numbers have tanked. Cain has risen in his place, but I dont see him winning the nomination as of yet. The most likely Republican nominee imho is Romney. I cant say I love him, but he was doing well in the polls. The others- Santorum, Bachman, Gingrich, Paul etc… dont have much of a chance as of now.

yitayningwut-“Tznius is not showing everybody anything” Huh??

Tznius is modesty, not hiding under a burka. Modesty means many things- and applies to men as well.

In a nutshell, I would describe tznius as “not drawing attention too oneself”.

This could mean by not wearing enough clothing, too much clothing, too tight, too flashy, blabbing endlessly loudly, etc…

We are all confused. But just know that the unions are joining the protest, and the WH is quite pleased that this protest is taking place.

They are protesting that the rich are getting richer and are not sharing the wealth with everyone else. Wall Street caused the current economic climate and they are still in business and have the ability to cause another collapse.

Its a little quick, but doable. I have seen this so many times. Those who come late, or come on time and shmooze first complain that davening is too fast. If you come on time, put your talis and tefillin on and start davening you may actually see that you do have time to daven more than just baruch sheamar, ashrei, and yishtabach.

Why stop at Unemployment Benefits? What about health care? and food? and a home? and education? and transportation? ommon sense needs to kick in somewhere.

Those who are laid off are for the most part not to be blamed at all. Unemployment benefits are a good thing- but not when you can be getting them for over two years straight! There is no longer an incentive to work. For many of the unemployed, the logic is as follows. Why get a $10 an hour job if it means having to go to work, paying for transportation, pay taxes, pay for more child care, if I can just stay home and the govt will pay me anyway?

Toi- First off, No one here in the CR is deifying him.

Are you saying we should not recognize him and thank him for his contribution?

Using your logic, the same way a murderer is punished severly for his actions even though it was Hashem’s plan, certainly one should acknowledge and praise someone’s positive contribution even though it was Hashem’s plan!

I cant say we are necessarily mourning his death, but we are definitely recognizing his contribution to this world.

That said, Baal Habooze does raise a very good point that the frum world may have been better off without his products. But like everything else in the world- and Toi what you said “the test is what you do with it”- our test is how we use his products. Do we download movies onto out IPods, or get the ShasPd and the other thousands of electronic shiurim available?

Do we surf the web and sites we should not visit, or do we spend our time in the Coffee Room!! :-p

mommamia22- I’ve heard that concept of not apologzing directly, but never with a reputable source. Until then, I strongly disagree. Children are no less human than anyone else.

If you did something wrong you need to ask mechila like everyone else. From a chinuch standpoint its great to discuss how you will react differently next time so your child can learn to do the same.

But dont you see how much more you can teach them by apologizing? Some times kids feel that parents give them no respect -another thing that some parents wrongly feel they are allowed to do- and dont care about their feelings. Asking mechila will boost their self respect- and respect you more for it. They will see how hard it was for you to apologize and learn to do the right thing even when it is difficult. (I feel very strongly about this.)

600 Kilo Bear- While you do have some valid points, lets be honest.

“The technology he introduced is highly overpriced and gimmicky.”

    1. If millions are willing to pay the price then it shouldnt be called overpriced.

2.Gimmicky? What does that mean? My mac works great without any gimmicks or updates every two days.

    3. Gimmicky? There are way fewer viruses, trojans, malware, spyware etc. on a Mac than a PC.

“Everything Apple comes out with is quickly superseded with better and more economical alternatives from elsewhere.”

    3. “Everything”?? Not even close. Ask anyone that has had a PC and a Mac and they will agree that the Mac is head and shoulders above the rest.

    4. More economical alternatives- True, but inferior quality. A sweater from Old Navy is also an alternative to a sweater from Banana Republic, but the quality is inferior.

“Jobs was more a pitchman than anything”

    5. What?? He was the brains behind everything!

“Jobs had one real opportunity and blew it – that was licensing the technology for computers to run on the Apple operating system”

    6. One real opportunity? What are you talking about? You are totally ignoring every Apple product he created- Mac, IPod, Iphone, IPad etc

    7. Did you know that Jobs is the one who rescued Apple from almost bankruptcy with his innovations? Think 10 years back, few people had any Apple product. Now, who doesnt have at least an IPod?

“Android will make applesauce out of Apple the way Microsoft did.”

    8. What?? Apple made applesauce out of Microsoft, not vice versa.
