In my personal experience and from what I’ve witnessed, cold turkey (as opposed to the weaning process) is an excellent way to beat MANY bad habits. (I stress “many,” because obviously not ALL issues can be solved in such a way).

Since last summer. I guess I’m still pretty much a newbie. I ran a few times, then entered in to a 5k, and have been hooked ever since. My stats are on the 5k website. I think I had a 10 min mile back then as well.

Right now I’m not at a very good pace, I keep to an 8 minute mile, and the beginning is kind of hard because my body’s not pumped yet until I’m past mile 2 or 3, once that happens, it gets a lot easier, but that’s until I run 13 miles then I start to get tired, and push myself until I nearly fall to the ground.

I’m not sure, but I know there are charity groups that do it so maybe they get a discount. I have to pay $11 processing fee, and $171 for the race, but I think that includes the chip that costs $35 which you get back once you return the chip. I hope I get in too! I’ll keep you posted on my status 🙂

    Thanks for the welcomes!

Yep, I’m training for the NYC Marathon, I sent in my application today, hoping to get accepted! I never knew it was a lottery thing. I thought anyone can run if they want 🙁 . So now I have to wait till around June to find out. But, I’m still going to train no matter what. Got my bodyfat % checked last night by a nurse doing free screenings, and I have 11.1 % body fat. WOO HOO!

WOW! It’s so nice to see that this thread is still alive! YAY! How has everyone’s running been in this bitter and windy cold winter? I hate running in the cold, and I hate having to wear so many layers, it just weighs so much to run with. I just wanted to announce that I’m up to 13.5 miles now and approximately 70 miles a week!! I just hope I’m able to make it more than 26 miles by November…

ames, I very much disagree with your seatbelt comment.

If C’V that person gets into an accident, they can fly through the windshield and injury bystanders, and/or other drivers. Also, if there are other passengers in the car, this person can fly all over the inside of the car and injure the others. Wearing a seatbelt benefits everyone involved, not just yourself.

What you can do the next time you have someone stare at you, you could just stare right back at them, until they look away. Also, try tricking your brain into thinking it’s something positive. For instance, think, wow I must be beautiful, and that’s why people can’t take their eyes off me. You can also go right up to them and say, I’m sorry, but do I have a booger in my nose? Turning this uncomfortable situation into something positive and/or comical makes it all the easier to handle.

Where I run, there are several ice patches (especially when I run in the early mornings). When I come face to face with the menacing ice patch, I hop right over it (praying that I don’t miscalculate and fall flat on my face). Does anyone recall the endless rain we had a little while back? There were puddles everywhere. One was so deep, I practically swam across it (no joke!). My toes were icicles and my sneakers were drenched and were terribly heavy.

Hey, anyone have funny, or interesting running stories they’d like to share?

I’m hating the cold right now, it’s just awful! If I didn’t have a ski mask to run in, I don’t think I could withstand the wind factor, and it’s only going to be getting colder. waaaaaa

I have at least 8 cups of tap water a day, but usually more on my longer runs.

Most sport drinks do have some electrolytes, but are loaded with sugar. Powerade now makes sugar free sports drinks. There are some electrolytes in them to keep you going, but if you are a hard core runner, then you might want to talk to your doctor about taking potassium supplements, as well as a B complex. You shouldn’t take extra vitamins unless you have a blood test and/or your doctors orders.

Anyone in NJ into 5ks? Every sunday of January, they are having a 5k race in Freehold, and it only cost about 5 bucks to enter each time. Its smaller, but loads of fun, you should check it out.

    1) What was your initial motivation for taking up running? (i.e. weight loss, excersize, marathon)

I was getting so bored of the elliptical, so I decided to try running one night, and even though I hardly could do one mile at the time, I felt great! I’ve grown a love for running for exercise, and it helps clear my mind, and I love running in races!

    2) Where you successful in meeting that goal? (lost weight, got into excersize routine, ran a marathon)

My list of fitness goals are infinite. I make little ones at a time, but I never stop making new goals for myself. As of right now, my goals are to up my number of reps in different exercises, up my mileage in running, and run in this years NYC marathon.

    What about you?

Ran in a 5k this sunday. Entering races is my big motivator.

Ashreinu, you’re 100% correct! Writing down the foods I ate helped start me off on eating healthy.

Food wise, I’m eating around 2,500-3,000 calories, depending on my activity level for that day. 50grams of protein, 30grams of fiber, tons of veggies and fruits, a multi vitamin, 8+ cups of water, and cheese products. I also allow a cheat meal a week, and a small piece of extra dark chocolate at night. I mess up sometimes, but I just pick myself off, and get right back on the wagon as if nothing ever happened.

What does everyone’s exercise regimen consist of?

I upped my running mileage to 25-35 miles a week depending on if I do a long run that week.

I do all different types of push ups, chin ups, bicycle crunches, leg lifts, lunges, squats, yoga, tai chi, and karate (I don’t do all these things every day, I alternate). Oh yeah, and the best exercise of all, running around with the baby!

I don’t know about the rest of you, where I live it’s not only freezing weather, but the wind factor is our of control! When I run I wear at least 5 layers, and every inch of me is covered, but the ski mask tends to scare people…

p.s. not a big fan of the cold!

If someone slips and injures themselves in front of your house, or gets into a car accident because of snow falling off your car, you can get a ticket, and get sued. So remember, you’re not just doing other people a service, you’re doing yourself a HUGE favor.

When you get your drivers license, it is implied that you will follow the traffic laws or suffer the consequences. If you can’t accept this responsibility, then do yourself and everyone else a favor, and don’t get your drivers license.

Those who work in EMS, been in or witnessed accidents, or had a loved one in an accident, are more sensitive to traffic laws, because they have seen and felt the horrible pain first hand. Look and learn from these people, think before you act, so you can prevent yourself from ever having to deal with such anguish.

Why is there even a topic to aid people in braking the law here on the YWN CR?

What example are we setting for our children?

How are you portraying the Jewish people to the outside world?

    This thread is extremely distasteful.

SJSinNYC – Since you recently had a baby, and haven’t exercised in a while, strengthening your pelvis is very important for when you are beginning a workout routine. There are several pelvic exercises you can do, that just use your own body weight and don’t require pricy equipment.

The next best thing to start doing, is strengthening your core. Pilates &/or Yoga, are excellent ways to accomplish that.

Walking is a great way to get your body used to moving around and a safe way to jump in to the workout world.

You can start doing push ups, & crunches – there are several types of workouts you can do for each. I’ll tell you from experience, that those exercises are really amazing when it comes to toning.

If you want to start running, then intervals are the best way to get there. When going for a walk, start running for about 30 seconds – 1 minute, then stop running and continue walking, then after a few minutes, run again then stop and continue walking. Repeat these steps until you can no longer physically do anymore. Every day you go out for a walk, add a little more time to running, and a little less time walking. In time, this will build your endurance up enough to cut out walking altogether and be a sole runner.

P.S.-The times I wrote are only examples, your walk and run time will vary, depending on your fitness level. Have a goal to finish at least one mile and calculate how much running you want to include with your walk.

Also, let your doctor know you want to start a workout routine. It is very unlikely for your doctor to disapprove of this, unless you had some health condition that restricts you from performing certain exercises.

And another thing, try to see if any of your friends want to start to work out as well. Having a partner in this is very helpful, and motivating.

    Hope this helped. Good Luck!

    Ashreinu-

    1. I do a short stretch before I run ( only a couple minutes worth), just to loosen up a bit so I’m not stiff anywhere when I run.

After a run I do at least 20 minutes worth of stretching.

    2. My warm up is basically walking to the park where I do my run. I usually cool down from my walk back, and my stretching.

I LOVE food!!! Most of my favorites, are junkie type foods, like candy, chocolate, pizza, burgers, hotdogs, fries, pastries, chips, I don’t think I have the time to name them all 🙂

I try to keep my noshing to a minimum though, and make sure I’m getting proper amounts of vitamins, minerals, h2o, protein, fiber, fruits and veggies. But, I DO allow one “cheat” meal a week, and a little treat at night, as long as I’ve eaten well and did my exercise routine for that day. I’m hungry all the time, so fitting everything in, is a pretty easy task!

asdfghjkl – 2 hours is incredible!! Have you calculated your milage? I usually run around 5 miles 4 or 5 days a week, then run almost 10 miles once a week, but I don’t think I have that kind of endurance yet, to run for that long.

I began running consistently since the beginning of last summer.

When I decided to run, I signed up for a 5k, it was just incredible, and I was hooked ever since.

I had a lot of problems with one of my legs at first (because of a past sport injury), but when I switched shoes, the pain in my leg went away.

I was also stiff in the beginning, so I started stretching after every run for at least 20 minutes. I also took up yoga and pilates, which have helped with my balance and flexibility for when I run.

p.s. my $30 shoes are incredible! They are name brand, and a couple years ago they did cost around $100. My physical therapist approves of them as well, and I guess I’m just a thrifty shopper 🙂

Definitely awesome that you run that long and do it every day, Keep it up! I wear adidas running shoes. They are the most comfortable things. Got them at famous footwear for under $30!

    (Previously posted in NYC Marathon?)

Has anyone here ever run, or going to run the NYC marathon?

I’ve been training for it, and I’d really appreciate getting some feedback.

    Previous runners:

Tell me about your training, and your whole experience in the marathon. Also, how long did you train for?

    First time runners:

How’s your training coming along? What are you doing to prepare, and train yourself for the race? How many miles are you capable of running in a single run so far

intellegent – In the winter time, I’m as pale as a porcelain doll. Are you calling me ugly? waaaa – Jk hehehe 😉

I didn’t wear make up for the first time until I was in my 20s! I know it sounds sad, but I’m still learning. hehehe

For those who are married whether with or without makeup, should look nice for their husbands either way. Some husbands prefer their wives not to wear makeup. Some do. As far as single girls, most are so young and look beautiful without makeup, but for shiduchim purposes I don’t see why not. (a normal amount though, you wont be doing yourself any justice looking like a raccoon).

I have to admit though, that I’m a sucker for lip gloss, it’ so shiny and taste yummy! (along with my blistex)

Swimming is by far the best and safest for your body in a whole. Women in their 3rd trimester of pregnancy, older individuals, and people with physical disabilities can take advantage of getting their cardio through swimming.

But, if you are able, running is absolutely incredible. It helps relieve stress and keep you in shape.

If you have a knee problem, biking is not the solution either because of the repetitive motions you are doing throughout the exercise. Again swimming would be the best for that individual.

For those who are afraid of injuring their knees, or want to prevent the “runners knee,” there are several exercises you can do to help with that, but you are still not completely immune.

Just make sure to keep yourselves hydrated well, and that you’re getting sufficient amounts of vitamins (especially B vitamins, & vitamin D), potassium, protein, fiber, whole grains and calories. Plus you should be getting yearly physicals. There, you will have the opportunity to talk to your doctor about your exercise regimen and to make sure you aren’t deficient in any vitamins or supplements.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I LOVE running in the winter time 🙂

Thanks for all your answers so far 🙂 they could not have come at a better time, (Thanksgiving & family gatherings).

The person in question hasn’t been disrespected (to the best of my knowledge or intentions).

Believe me I understand the hardship of what it’s like to be the child living at home in this situation for several years.

This is many years later. It’s a different person, a different time, and a different place.

Our families have an interesting relationship. Gatherings as you can imagine are even more so.

Nobody- I’m not so certain there’s an issue of respecting ones age here. Need I elaborate?

I’m just curious, because I do not recall ever learning this. Obviously, I use common sense, and wouldn’t intentionally act in a rude manner or start any drama. I’m wondering if and where this topic is written.
