TakahM: Good point. You should also reprimand anyone referring to “Israel” rather than using its proper name, Eretz Yisroel.
JosephParticipantIf you had forgotten, your Rov made one for you.
May 31, 2020 1:28 am at 1:28 am in reply to: Chasidus bans “informers” from using its facilities #1865953JosephParticipantThe Ran in Nedarim paskens that in Eretz Yisroel there’s no obligation of Dina D’Malchusa Dina. (Since the basis for DDD is Jews adhering to the kingdoms rules in return for the kingdom permitting the Jews to reside there says the Ran; but as Jews already have a G-d given right to live in Eretz Yisroel they therefore have no obligations to the ruling authorities in Eretz Yisroel, paskens the Ran.) As such, there’s no obligation to adhere to Israeli law. Therefore, for a Jew to cause another Jew to be penalized by the secular authorities for doing something that’s halachicly permissible, is impermissible.

Check your email for 8/6/2012 (sorry, my memory was off by about 15 months.) I was away from the city for the summer and you insisted it being in the city so I offered to do it when I returned. But you adamantly declined to share the necessary information.
Have an absolutely gevaldik and lichtig Yom Tov!

May 28, 2020 2:29 pm at 2:29 pm in reply to: Empirical data: how did we handle COVID vs our neighbors? #1865767JosephParticipantYY, they change their diet to kosher only and duly accrue said benefits.
If you have any additional questions you can learn the Gemorah and Chasam Sofer, and hopefully become a boki on this issue. Do ascetic Jains eat a 100% kosher diet?
May 28, 2020 2:28 pm at 2:28 pm in reply to: What can the company running a kosher Internet filter see? #1865765JosephParticipantJust because they have the technical ability to do so, does not indicate that they are actually looking at or recording passwords, bank statements or transactions.
JosephParticipantMr. Avi Weiss had no right to break the law when he chained himself to embassies or consulates and the other forms of civil disobedience he committed against the law.
May 27, 2020 11:29 pm at 11:29 pm in reply to: Empirical data: how did we handle COVID vs our neighbors? #1865612JosephParticipantThe Gemara suggests that the Shichvas Zera of a Nochri has different properties from that of a Jew, since the Nochri eats non-Kosher foods and is physically affected by his diet. The Chasam Sofer (Teshuvos YD 175) writes that this Gemara is relevant in practice. He rules that we cannot assume that a medical treatment that was tested successfully on a Nochri will also be successful on a Jew. Rav Elyashev zt’l pointed out that the Chasam Sofer writes that the physical characteristics of a Yid are different than a Goy, and that what applies to one may not apply to the other.
May 27, 2020 5:33 pm at 5:33 pm in reply to: Chasidus bans “informers” from using its facilities #1865498JosephParticipantIs there any legitimate posek in the world that purported to contrive some reason why there was a heter for mesira here?
Since none are known, there’s no reason to assume so any more than one would assume someone publicly seen sitting at the window in Burger King eating pork on Yom Kippur had a heter to do so.
JosephParticipantMeshimer provides the best and strongest filter for Android. Both on a technical level and, even more importantly, on a policy level where they will not permit inappropriate content or apps even if the customer requests it.
May 27, 2020 9:49 am at 9:49 am in reply to: Empirical data: how did we handle COVID vs our neighbors? #1865309JosephParticipantThen use 11219, if that’s more representative (than 08701). And compare it to the citywide statistics of New York City.
May 27, 2020 9:48 am at 9:48 am in reply to: Chasidus bans “informers” from using its facilities #1865308JosephParticipantThis is a very light punishment. Al pi Torah and al pi Halacha the prescribed punishment for mosrim is much harsher than what they are doing.
JosephParticipantn0m: Do you also blame the United Nations for having failed to expand testing? It is the responsibility of the State health authorities not the feds. Furtermore, as indicated, all hands were on deck and expansion was in fact done to the maximum extent feasible. Even though that was less than desired, it was as much as physically possible.
May 27, 2020 1:15 am at 1:15 am in reply to: Empirical data: how did we handle COVID vs our neighbors? #1865246JosephParticipantA good rule of thumb to obtain your desired statistical comparison would be to compare Lakewood’s ZIP code to the statewide numbers of New Jersey.
JosephParticipantGreat Britain also has almost double the US death rate, per capita.
JosephParticipantBenny, both Belgium and Spain have over double the US death rate per capita. All the other countries I listed also have a significantly higher per capita death rate than the United States.
Comparing countries total death rates when they have huge differences in total population is meaningless. Per capita is the only valid comparison.
JosephParticipantReb Eliezer, if you produce a few hundred million tests and expanded labatory capacity, the country will thank you. So far there’s been a worldwide shortage of testing capacity that’s affected every very large country in the world since March. In the last couple weeks things have improved.
JosephParticipantReb Eliezer, absolutely. All the European countries I listed in my previous comment, as well as additional ones for a total of mine first-world European countries, have much higher per capita COVID-19 death rates. In fact, some of those countries have *over double* US death and infection rate.
And those are all first-world countries with world-class health systems. And the United States has done much better than all of them in the fight against the novel coronovirus.
JosephParticipanthuju: So far the United States has done much better fighting the virus than has the UK, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Ireland and a number of other European countries.
May 25, 2020 7:51 pm at 7:51 pm in reply to: $1200 for the Public but Trillions of Dollars for Corporations #1864712JosephParticipantn0m: If a corporation is a legal fiction, then government support of corporations is in fact support of people/citizens (as akuperma pointed out above), as the benefits accrued by corporations are received by the people who the corporation employ (that’s you and me) and people who are shareholders (that’s what you own in your 401k.)
May 25, 2020 5:59 pm at 5:59 pm in reply to: $1200 for the Public but Trillions of Dollars for Corporations #1864686JosephParticipantIf you don’t believe in corporate socialism, you should also not support personal socialism.
JosephParticipantReb Eliezer, if I were to run for president I would do a jig dance.
Doesn’t mean that’s a requirement for other candidates.
JosephParticipantReb Eliezer, if you have nothing to hide, why don’t you publish your tax returns on the web?
May 25, 2020 3:38 pm at 3:38 pm in reply to: $1200 for the Public but Trillions of Dollars for Corporations #1864581JosephParticipantAmil, that isn’t factually accurate. From the second Congressional bill re-filling the coffers to fund money to businesses, the vast majority went to small businesses. Large businesses, in fact, were excluded.
Many large businesses were even forced to pay back the money they got from the first Congressional bill.
JosephParticipantBiden needs to be held accountable for having allowed his son Hunter to take advantage of his office of the Vice Presidency to take a foreign do-nothing job in the Ukraine, paying about a million dollars a year to his drug addict son.
JosephParticipantA clear majority of the American frum world live in the NY Metro area.
May 25, 2020 2:08 pm at 2:08 pm in reply to: $1200 for the Public but Trillions of Dollars for Corporations #1864528JosephParticipantThe small guys got the $1200 + $500/child. As well as over $1,000/week in unemployment, with the additional $600.
And small businesses got the forgivable loans/grants.
May 25, 2020 1:24 pm at 1:24 pm in reply to: Why do some of us we think the rules do not apply to them? #1864490JosephParticipantI’ve noticed at least the same proportion of local non-Jews disregarding the virus rules as Jews who are doing so. Anyone blaming the Jews was an antisemite to begin with, before there was this virus.
JosephParticipantlot112: The chance of its return will remain the case for years to come.
A vaccine may be years, or longer, away.
May 25, 2020 1:23 pm at 1:23 pm in reply to: Lakewood Yeshivos closed because of Murphy not Corona. #1864488JosephParticipantPony, and which Lakewood Yeshivos do you know that have already opened — if any? If not, what are you hocking in chinik about?
May 25, 2020 11:36 am at 11:36 am in reply to: Lakewood Yeshivos closed because of Murphy not Corona. #1864424JosephParticipantPony: Who are “THE” local doctors? Every local doctor can have a different opinion. Especially on an issue such as this where the medical community itself doesn’t know too much.
The points you are debating are NOT agreed in one direction or the other by all local doctors.
May 25, 2020 10:34 am at 10:34 am in reply to: Lakewood Yeshivos closed because of Murphy not Corona. #1864415JosephParticipantSyag, everything I’ve been hearing says the medical community still does not know whether those testing positive for antibodies have any protection.

May 24, 2020 10:29 pm at 10:29 pm in reply to: Minyanim Legal in New York starting tomorrow #1864244JosephParticipantThat sounds like a very reasonable point, Milhouse.
But what if the President disagrees with you and acts accordingly by invoking that law in the manner I suggested?
JosephParticipantWho are you referring to? I only asked a question; I didn’t make a statement.
May 24, 2020 6:52 pm at 6:52 pm in reply to: What is EY doing in fighting Covi-19 that NYC can learn from” #1864194JosephParticipantIsrael: 16,712 Cases, 279 Deaths, First Coronavirus Death In Gaza Strip
Gaza, which is packed like sardines with a populations density of 13,064 people per square mile, which is about half the density of New York City (and about equal with Boston), just now had its first cornovirus death. They are doing far better than the State of Israel despite being much more densely populated.
May 24, 2020 6:49 pm at 6:49 pm in reply to: What is EY doing in fighting Covi-19 that NYC can learn from” #1864189JosephParticipantYY: At least eight nations just in Europe alone have a higher per capita death toll than the United States. Some of them have a more than double the death toll than the United States. And the others are also far higher than the United States.
Obviously Pres. Trump has done a better job at fighting the novel coronovirus than Prime Minister Wilmes of Belgium, Prime Minister Sanchez of Spain, Prime Minister Johnson of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Conte of Italy, President Macron of France, Prime Minister Lovfen of Sweden, Prime Minister Rutte of the Netherlands and Prime Minister Varadkar of Ireland.
North America and Europe likely have the most reliable data, comparably, thus making them better comparisons. Unlike third world countries with poor health record keeping and/or politically manipulating their coronavirus health data. It is highly unlikely these first world European countries (than did worse than the US) did worse than the third world.
And if you’re going to blame the federal government for the numbers, then certainly far more blame lies on the doors of the state governors, like Cuomo, for starting stay at home orders very late in March, thereby resulting in tens of thousands of additional deaths. The governors are far more responsible than the feds, who do not order school closings (also late in New York) and stay at home mandatory orders.
May 24, 2020 6:48 pm at 6:48 pm in reply to: Lakewood Yeshivos closed because of Murphy not Corona. #1864180JosephParticipantYour doctor or my doctor? If the doctor the Rov consults believes it is safe, why should he disregard his doctor because some other doctor is screaming otherwise?
JosephParticipantMilhouse, you could ask your same question regarding meat plants. Yet the President invoked it for meat plants.
Furthermore, even if your question is valid and on target, if the President simply asserts the Defense Production Act in ordering places of worship to reopen as he did with meat plants, perhaps by stating America needs prayers for the wellbeing of our national defense, after the fact I don’t see what could stop any house of worship from reopening at that point under the rubric of the presidential order, even if it is in defiance of the state governors executive orders.
JosephParticipantShould everything remain closed for the next two years, if it takes two years to develop and produce a vaccine?
It may take that long for a vaccine. It is also a realistic possibility that no vaccine will be found altogether.
JosephParticipantWuhan lab admits to having 3 strains of bat coronavirus on-site
The Wuhan Institute for Virology has admitted to having three live strains of bat coronavirus on-site, though the lab insists that none are the source of the current coronavirus pandemic, AFP reported.
The lab’s director, Wang Yanyi, said in an interview aired Saturday that the lab has “isolated and obtained some coronaviruses from bats” since 2004, AFP reported…
May 24, 2020 5:47 pm at 5:47 pm in reply to: Lakewood Yeshivos closed because of Murphy not Corona. #1864161JosephParticipant2q: There are hundreds of shuls that have opened in the last few days.
May 24, 2020 4:04 pm at 4:04 pm in reply to: Lakewood Yeshivos closed because of Murphy not Corona. #1864134JosephParticipantPony, rabbonim are making the final call when to reopen the shuls.
JosephParticipantFellows, even with the Minyanim being open in the regular shuls, even if all shuls are open, nevertheless most shuls are limiting the number of people being allowed to come (at the same time.) As such, not everyone can come to shul so there will still be ad hoc side Minyanim outside shuls, in people’s backyards etc.
JosephParticipantBret Stephens, a New York Times op-ed arch-liberal has a commentary in back of yesterday’s New York Times saying Flynn is innocent and was railroaded by the FBI and courts.
May 24, 2020 2:36 pm at 2:36 pm in reply to: Lakewood Yeshivos closed because of Murphy not Corona. #1864071JosephParticipantMedical professionals are only to be consulted. With that information it is the rabbonim shlita that make the final call about opening shuls and Yeshivos; not the doctors who make the call. The doctors give the info to the rabbonim who use that info to decide.
May 24, 2020 10:04 am at 10:04 am in reply to: Lakewood Yeshivos closed because of Murphy not Corona. #1863947JosephParticipantHaimy: If he really feels that way he should reopen, just as we defied the governmental orders of Czarist Russia and Hellenist Greece.
JosephParticipantMilhouse, well workshop was a typo (probably spell check); it should’ve read worship. Otherwise, I don’t see why the president, as a technical legal matter, couldn’t do for houses of worship what he did for meatshops.
Then again, I’m not a lawyer. One could argue against it. But if the President actually did invoke this, presumably houses of worship would have a leg to stand on and reopen until it was otherwise litigated.
