A. The current uptick affecting certain states are nowhere remotely close to the hospitalization rates and especially to the death rates New York and New Jersey experienced.
It is mostly now affecting younger people who much easily can handle it. Previously it mostly affected older people.
Furthermore, the younger idiots are the ones who for the last few weeks have been gathering in the mass BLM riots/protests, with masses of leftist fools standing on top of each other in close proximity. What did they expect?
B. The current uptick is also affecting deep blue states California and Washington State.
“A” is the more important point.
JosephParticipantN0m: The Titanic is a textbook case as described in the Mishna and Shulchan Aruch. It directly describes the situation. There’s no ambiguity. You are avoiding this fact by trying to twist like a pretzel what the Halacha is and how it directly describes such a situation. You’re being intellectually dishonest by taking a virtual carbon copy of the situation in trying to fardrey it somehow differently.
JosephParticipantRav Yisroel Salanter would have very strong critical words for a sheigetz anti-Semite like Dinkins, who literally has Jewish blood on his hands.
Calling him a washroom attendant would’ve been too nice a description.
JosephParticipantopinionated-2: whoha! You CAN find working boys who are the biggest maamin and yirei shamayim. True, it may be harder to find that among working boys than among learning boys, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look (and insist) on those attributes. So I don’t know if you should be excluding working boys.
As far as divorced parents, don’t even think about it. Just go about shidduchim as normal without worry. If asked about it, treat it as if asked about your schooling history, shul membership and any other myriad of shidduch related questions. Answer them and move on.
Are you heimish or chasidish?
JosephParticipantN0m: You’re going out on a huge limb to avoid acknowledging that the Halacha is a practical one that’s in effect in the normal course of life. I dare speculate that the reason you’re going so far out of your way to avoid acknowledging the practical effects of this mitzvah is a result of being ashamed of it when having to explain and justify it to non-Jews and secular Jews who, with their 20th/21st century Western mindset cannot conceive of such a law set by G-d.
It’s the same thing other people do regarding kaparos, mezitza b’peh and even plain ‘ole Bris Milah itself, among other “archaic” Mitzvos and obligations.
The facts of the matter are that on the Titanic you had masses of people congregating on the deck angling and pushing to get in to the limited number of lifeboats. They were all there together, many masses of people, that the crew had to select from right in front of their noses. As such, this is certainly a very clear case of were this Halacha we’re discussing in the Mishna and Shulchan Aruch would certainly apply.
JosephParticipantCS: Is it fair to say wealth plays no role in shidduchim, by your family?
JosephParticipantN0m: If a non-Jew in Eretz Yisroel, during the times of the Sanhedrin, violated a Sheva Mitzvos Bnei Noach, he would face capital punishment by Beis Din.
JosephParticipantN0m: Firstly explain, in detail, your understanding of the aforementioned Halacha in that Mishna and Shulchan Aruch and when it does apply. Please also give a realistic example.
After explaining that, then secondly explain how you think the Titanic is different and doesn’t fall under that Halacha’s parameters.
Please label the first part as 1 and label the second answer as 2.
JosephParticipantCS: Would you sooner do a shidduch with an honest rich person than you would with an honest poor person?
JosephParticipantN0m: The Titanic would fall under the Halacha in the Mishna and Shulchan Aruch that we’ve discussed above. Why would you think otherwise?
JosephParticipantCS: Yes we are supposed to be the morality police. Our butei dinim are supposed to enforce, with capital punishment, observance of the Sheva Mitzvos Bnei Noach. And they must judge our own, as well, with punishments.
JosephParticipantN0m: A police officer has either the obligation or certainly the authority to arrest a drunk driver. If the drunk driver resists arrest the police officer needs to enforce the arrest with physical means. And the resisting arrest criminal is responsible for what happens.
And if a criminal grabs and obtains an officer’s weapon, the officer is absolutely obligated to retrieve it however necessary.
These two heroic officers did everything BY THE BOOK. By the book under police regulations and under the law. They deserve an award for removing a criminal from the streets.
JosephParticipantCS: Why are you categorizing a child of an imprisoned father as a “misfit”? You’re guilty of the same thing you malign the shadchanim with. Just as a child isn’t at fault for their parents divorce, similarly a child isn’t at fault for their parent’s imprisonment.
JosephParticipant1. Why are the only two possibilities you list either a. a long-term learner or b. long-term single-hood? Isn’t a working guy better than long-term single-hood?
2. Why are you mentioning that your parents are divorced? How do you believe that’ll affect your shidduch prospects?
JosephParticipantN0m:
1. It is proper for the police to arrest someone for drunk driving. The Atlanta cops arresting that criminal was proper.
2. The Atlanta DA directly stated that a taser is considered to be a deadly weapon under Georgia law. Furthermore, the taser manufacturer describes a taser as “less lethal”, not “non lethal”, clearly indicating it can be lethal. Additionally, people have died from being tasered.
JosephParticipantImplicitly.
JosephParticipantSyag, apology accepted for your previous comment here.
JosephParticipantA zoning ordinance cannot restrict religious prayers in private residences without violating the constitution.
JosephParticipantN0m: I’m sure you do not mean to suggest that police around the country permit drunken drivers to get off the hook and go home after failing a breathalyzer.
As such, the Atlanta officers appropriately attempted to place him in handcuffs and arrest him. Thereafter the criminal brought about his own demise with his action attempting using a deadly weapon against a police officer.
JosephParticipantAs akuperma pointed out, no law can stop anyone from praying in their private home or from inviting friends into his home or from praying in his home with all his invited friends praying with him.
June 25, 2020 12:40 pm at 12:40 pm in reply to: Why did NYC choose a Mayor like Bill De blasio? #1876493JosephParticipantLike I said, De Blasio is overall an Oheiv Yisroel despite being a deep leftist. (See, I can recognize this attribute in people other than the President and Republicans.) The mayor is bad for the city overall but has been good, generally, on religious issues.
That said, the next mayor will be much worse in all regards. Y’all will be wishing De Blasio had a third term.
JosephParticipantThis week the scientific community is reporting that the COVID antibodies wear off very quickly.
JosephParticipantN0m: Do you imagine that the Shulchan Aruch codified a Halacha (that is cited throughout the Rishonim and as you pointed out is based on the Mishna and Gemora) that is some exceptionally rare circumstance that is virtually inconceivable to transpire in accordance with the described Halachic description?
That asked, think about the Titanic and how the crew triaged who to rescue and who not to, because there wasn’t enough room on the boats offloading passengers. As you know the crew triaged based on gender. So much so, that Congress actually held public hearings on why some prominent men were permitted to have their lives saved by giving them the limited space on the life boats when there were still women who weren’t given that slot. Congress was angry that those men were saved before the women.
N0m, of course Yidden who follow Halacha would have done it oppositely of the triaged gender based decisions of the Titanic crew, based upon the Halacha we are discussing. But my primary point in bringing the example of the Titanic is that, no, it isn’t as rare as you seem to be making it out. And, yes, there are times when this Halacha would kick in.
JosephParticipantCTL: Presumably your aunt wasn’t surprised at the notice as she was cognizant of the 50 year time frame.
JosephParticipantN0m: It isn’t limited to the specific circumstances listed in the Mishna. The Mishna gives it as an example; it is a general rule. And it is codified as Halacha in the Shulchan Aruch.
JosephParticipantRLUIPA takes precedence over local zoning regulations.
JosephParticipantHow will owning title to property in Israel today going to help you when Moshiach comes as techiyas hameisim occurs?
The original Jewish property owners will reclaim all the property that was stolen from them by the Romans and all the other gentiles that seized Jewish property in Eretz Yisroel over the last two thousand years.
JosephParticipantWith absentee ballots Chaim will have gotten a bit more of the vote than the percent of this Congressional District that are frum Jews. The frum are about 15% of the district. But since 75% of the frum are not registered Democrats (most are Republicans and others are independents), they can’t vote in the primary.
June 24, 2020 11:54 am at 11:54 am in reply to: Why did NYC choose a Mayor like Bill De blasio? #1876060JosephParticipantY’all know the old saying — A conservative is a liberal who got mugged.
June 24, 2020 12:58 am at 12:58 am in reply to: Why did NYC choose a Mayor like Bill De blasio? #1875921JosephParticipantWith the very notable exception of the election and assumption of office by America’s Mayor Rudy Giuliani, ever since Ed Koch left office New York has gotten a worse mayor than the one he replaced in every transfer of power.
JosephParticipantWith 80% of the vote counted, Yvette Clarke has 60.8% of the vote. Bunkeddeko has 19.1%. Chaim is in third place with 9.8% of the vote.
JosephParticipant“There is also a danger of an epidemic that will destroy civilization.”
True
Wolf: You take sci-fi seriously?
JosephParticipantn0m: The officer chased him because he wanted to catch him without resorting to a deadly weapon. The officer was only forced to fire his weapon when the criminal aimed and fired the deadly weapon he seized from the officer against the officer, after the chase started.
JosephParticipant“2. Having worked in both corporate America and the government I can tell you that if your halfway competent and black doors will open for you and never are open for anyone else, so to say that there is prevalent racism out there is bogus.”
Exactly right, CS.
Less is expected and demanded from black candidates and employees. They receive preferential treatment in hiring (affirmative action) as well as in continuing employment, as you pointed out.
The reality in America for the last half century is that the most prevalent racism, by far, is reverse racism against whites.
JosephParticipantCatch Yourself: Your most recent post demonstrates you understand, even though you refuse to admit, that the Torah is anti-egalitarianism. Since you brought up its dictionary definition, Merriam-Websters has the following two entries for egalitarianism:
1: a belief in human equality especially with respect to social, political, and economic affairs
2: a social philosophy advocating the removal of inequalities among peopleBoth of them fail when you consider your own words in your previous comment regarding Halacha.
JosephParticipantRegarding race, you’re also mistaken, CY. See the Rashi in Parshas Noach.
Of course if someone becomes a Ger Tzedek that changes the world. He then starts a brand new life under a brand new scheme. But you surely cannot make a general claim that color isn’t a factor in the Torah.
JosephParticipantRabbi Hillel David, shlita.
JosephParticipantNow that we’ve dispensed with your false drooling narrative, if someone here had drooled over the Halacha of putting Talmidei Chachomim first, would you cry “CH” over citation of that Halacha? Or do you only consider too much discussion of what you consider uncomfortable Halachos to be a CH?
JosephParticipantI know. Mere mention of it is drooling. Especially if its something that hasn’t been mentioned here literally in years. Even if it is related to the ongoing conversation.
JosephParticipantOy, Syag doesn’t like to hear uncomfortable Halachos.
JosephParticipantWhere’d you get this notion that New York isn’t wearing masks anymore?
JosephParticipantCY: Incorrect. There’s a hierarchy. If people are drowning, the Halacha is that you save men before women, etc.
JosephParticipantThat zip code goes anywhere from 18th Avenue and 47th Street to Avenue P and East 21st Street. It can take almost an hour to walk from one corner of the zip to the other.
Any particular area within the zip that you’re interested in?
JosephParticipantAmil: The only American women in Vietnam during the war were nurses.
JosephParticipantWe need another William F. Buckley Jr.
JosephParticipantRayshard Brooks was a criminal, with a warrant out, who had been violent to children. He was bused driving drunk. The Atlanta officers were very polite to him. He then hit them, grabbed the officers deadly weapon, shot that weapon at the officers, ran away while shooting the deadly weapon a second time at the police officer, at which point the officer rightfully shot back at him in self-defense.
JosephParticipantSchnitzel: What on earth are you confused with? They never killed their slaves. Because that would be shooting themselves in their foot by destroying their own property.
And they aren’t killing blacks now either. Other than criminals who cause their own fate.
JosephParticipantJohn Bolton, in an interview with ABX News on Sunday, said that Jared Kushner is the most powerful man in America after the President.
“Next to the president, who held the most power in the White House?” ABC News’ Martha Raddatz asked Bolton.
“It varied from time to time,” Bolton responded. “The sustained answer to that question . . . is Jared Kushner.”
JosephParticipantWhy are Anglo ghettos so much more expensive, takah?
JosephParticipantCTL, I believe any university that accepts federal funding, such as PELL grants, is by law obligated to accept the ROTC on campus. Otherwise they’ll forfeit millions in federal funding.
