CA: The OP is multifaceted, including talking about Torah.

In either event, I gather the Five Towns is picking up the Queens-type of guys not so much the Flatbush or Lakewood types. How fast is the 5T growing and how large is its current frum population? I understand that housing in the 5T is very expensive.

The assertions that most poskim are mattir natural wigs or that their wives wear such, are both factually incorrect.

Check out the many sh”ut on wigs. You will find yourself surprised. Most are assur. The heterim are weak.

And Rav Elyashiv’s Psak isn’t “alleged”. It is real and undisputed that he issued it.

Yitzchok, the issue of Yeger having first run against Chaim Deutch is something I find disturbing. How do you justify that?

Yoni Hikind has learnt the political ropes by being close to his father for many years in the State Assembly. This is a much better background than Yeger’s “community board”.

Yeger had initially started running against Chaim Deutch. This is very troubling since it indicates naked political ambition even if it means going against the communities established councilman who is doing a very fine job. (In addition to attempting to take away a Yid’s job, which isn’t halachicly permissible.) He only switched to Greenfield’s district when he announced he’s retiring. Otherwise he’d be going against Deutch.

That all said, being he’s the official Democrat candidate, he will likely win as the Democrat political machine will supply Yeger enough votes on Row A.

You’re incorrect in asserting that a majority of (gedolei) poskim’s wives wear human hair sheitelech.

What you are calling “silly” is the precise point of vhayisem nekiim.

You can’t “put to rest” the gedolei poskim’s ,”claim about a”z”, since it is a serious and valid “claim”, even if others disagree.

You raised the issue of single girls, and it was only to your point I responded about single girls. People know that Mrs. A is an eishes ish. So if she’s seen with what appears to be uncovered hair, then the prohibition of “vhayisem nekiim” kicks in. If Miss B is walking outside, no one has reason to think she’s married because no one knows she’s married (since she isn’t), unlike a married woman’s acquaintances who do know she’s married.

The a”z issue and the vhayisem nekiim prohibition are obviously two completely separate issues.

Gavriel: The one’s who haven’t issued a psak one way or the other hold that, at best, it is a very weak heter or, at worst, not even that but they feel their communities will ignore and disregard them if they announce it is assur. And their hamon am will simply continue using them despite being advised it is assur; thus they feel it is counterproductive to officially pasken an issur.

And they have a valid basis in Halacha to not so pasken when they know they’ll be ignored.

do you really not see the difference between the two?

    No.

I don’t think considering the religious backgrounds of “Official Christian Holiday A” and “Official Christian Holiday B” has an effect in what way a Yid can participate or partake in either of them. Even in the context of giving gifts or sweets to those celebrating Holiday A or Holiday B.

The religious reasons the church established either of the two holidays should have no bearing on the limits of our commemorating or interacting with those holidays, however minor or major.

In short, there’s no halachic or hashkafic difference between giving Halloween candy to your neighbors for a Happy Halloween or giving Christmas presents to your neighbors for a Merry Christmas.

“so there is no difference” … “I happen to think there is a difference”

Which one is it? You are saying contradictory responses in the same breath.

If you “happen to think there is a difference”, I asked you to please explain what the halachic/hashkafic differences are between giving Christmas presents and giving Halloween candy bo b’yom.

(It is indesputable that Halloween is an official Christian holiday today, for both Catholics and Protestants. This can easily be confirmed with any church clergyman. All Hollows Eve begins on the evening (Oct. 31) prior to All Saints Day the same way Christmas Eve begins the evening of Dec. 24. These are both holdovers of the church beginning a holiday the evening before the day.)

Gaon: You are simply, and completely, and absolutely incorrect about the *METZIUS* of Halloween, otherwise known as All Saints’ Day and All Hallows’ Day. It most certainly is an official Christian festival celebrated and consecrated TODAY by the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Methodist Church, the Lutheran Church, and other Protestant churches. Christian celebration of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day stems from a belief that there is a powerful spiritual bond between those in heaven (the “Church triumphant”), and the living (the “Church militant”). In Catholic theology, the day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven.

Everything you said about the halachic status of Halloween applies equally to Christmas and vice versa. Christmas, too, is celebrated today in a mostly secular fashion, even by those who aren’t religious and aren’t Christian.

To paraphrase you, the fact is that Halloween is an official holiday directly associated with religion.

Something tells me that if it was an influx of Modern Orthodox Jews, there wouldn’t be the same resistance.

When the Jewish community in Wyckoff, NJ applied to build a synagogue in the 1970s, one of the opponents arguments against permitting it was “do you want Wyckoff to become another Teaneck.”

apy: You were asked three times whether you acted upon your own daas or asked a shaila, and what you asked, and you deflected an answer each time. Even now when pushed you simply say you “asked” something but you still decline to say what you asked and what the answer is. You can’t blame folks for being skeptical in the absence of a response. What was the exact shaila and what was the exact response? Whatever it is, is fine. No one needs names, we’ll take your word, but please simply be clear when commenting.

You received a psak that it is okay to give Christmas presents to non-Jews on Christmas? Only around Christmas? Only around New Years? Only if it is a New Years gift but not a Christmas gift? These nuances make a difference.

Queens uses a crazy street numbering system. For example, you got 159th St followed by 159th Ave and 159 Pl before it goes to 160th and does the same thing. Brooklyn goes in numerical and alphabetical order in an easily understood street grid plan.
