newbee, are you again mixing things up? I took no position. I simply asked a question and requested a source.
May 27, 2016 3:24 pm at 3:24 pm in reply to: Stealing permitted in order to save ones life? #1153393JosephParticipantTo save one’s life, yes. To learn Torah, no.
Source?
May 27, 2016 3:19 pm at 3:19 pm in reply to: Stealing permitted in order to save ones life? #1153392JosephParticipantThe second one especially is worrisome.
Why are you more worried about the second one than the first one? Is a spiritual life less important than a physical life?
JosephParticipantNu, tikun?
JosephParticipantWhat about the theory that there are only two posters in the CR. You and Joseph.
JosephParticipantkapusta, are you the same person who posted from this account for the last eight years? The comments you posted over the last number of days in this thread discussing the age gap are of a very different style than has been posted as kapusta anytime over the last eight+ years.
JosephParticipantHer registration was less than 10 years ago (by two days). Here are some that are over 10 years:

JosephParticipantShouldn’t the expressed opinions of the gedolim outweigh those lesser than them? Like us.
JosephParticipantWhere did ‘getting it right’ run off to?
JosephParticipantpopa, are fathers any more qualified, in your humble opinion, at being mentors than rebbeim?
JosephParticipantMammele, and who do you think all those extra Chinese boys are going to marry?
Obviously, non-Chinese girls. 😉
JosephParticipantA mod should please change the title of this thread so something like Age Difference Relevancy for Shidduchim, rather than this meaningless overlooked title.

May 26, 2016 4:28 am at 4:28 am in reply to: Zionist Rabbi: Hareidi Cities should Guard Themselves #1153046JosephParticipantNo, Rav Shteinman was never in favor of any such thing as chareidim serving in the Israeli army, despite any blog reports that spread that falsehood. Any he bears no responsibility for the creation of the so-called Nachal Chareidi, which is 80% non-Chareidi.

JosephParticipant“Voting for a candidate other than the one you believe to be best suited for the position is dishonest.”
… Assuming you limit your selection from among the candidates that have a realistic chance at winning the electoral college.
JosephParticipantIt’s a Rebbi’s job to guide. If he abdicates that responsibility he’s failed his duty.
JosephParticipantDon’t worry. Either the Democrat or Republican candidate will win. Only. Voting for anyone else, Green or Libertarian or other third party or not voting at all, is all the same.
May 26, 2016 2:30 am at 2:30 am in reply to: Taxes should be only to collect money that the government needs to run #1153356JosephParticipant“Why not?”
They reduce smoking.
JosephParticipantIn addition to being able to turn off data or texting from the accounts portal, you can also blacklist phone numbers from being called or make a whitelist of phone numbers that are the only numbers that can be called from the cellphone.
It also allows you to set service timers were the phone can only be used during specific hours or days of the week. You can also view a real-time itemized listing of every number called or texted.
May 26, 2016 12:35 am at 12:35 am in reply to: Taxes should be only to collect money that the government needs to run #1153353JosephParticipantAre you advocating the abolition of cigarette taxes?
JosephParticipantDY, why do you think that re: OTD, BT, MO, etc.?
JosephParticipantIsrael has a very sharp class divisions, and will probably self-destruct over that if it doesn’t address the matter which would be hard to do as the secular upper class isn’t about to share the wealth.
akuperma: I don’t think the Chareidim will rebel against being in a lower economic bracket than the secular Israelis.
JosephParticipantGIR, kapusta agrees that overall younger classes are larger than older classes.
JosephParticipantNeither is the Green Party candidate.
JosephParticipantAvi Chai Foundation studies show GIR’s points are correct.
JosephParticipantSam, ?? ??? ????? ?????.
JosephParticipantkapusta, how is Nasi or anyone playing with lives by, say, suggesting shadchanim focus on pairing 25 year old boys with 25 year old girls instead of focusing on pairing 25 year old boys with 22 year old girls?
JosephParticipantFirst prove that there is an age gap to close. Until anyone can do that, no one should be promoting it in any way.
So if it is not possible to prove either way, then in your opinion no one should be promoting or encouraging to close the age gap — even if anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that the age gap is a large cause for a disparity in girls having available shidduchim.
Therefore, in your opinion, even if the age gap is causing women to be unable to get married, it should not be addressed or fixed despite the anecdotal evidence that is happening, because it cannot be proven.
JosephParticipantkapusta – if it is impossible to obtain “proof” one way or another on the age gap issue and its effect in skewering shidduchim availability, then in your opinion nothing should be done to alleviate the age gap?
JosephParticipantThe problem is, “pro-vaxxers” over-inflate the benefits (and risks of inaction), while “anti-vaxxers” over-inflate the risks and downplay the dangers of disease. This leads to a lack of a middle ground and flexibility.
Avram, what would a middle ground constitute and how might someone taking a middle ground on this issue act on that position vis-a-vis vaccinating his children?
JosephParticipantA national scientific survey will cost far far more than some weekly ads in Hamodia and Yated. But the cost isn’t the only issue that make a scientific survey impractical. How will you identify all frum families with their contact information. And then how many will even respond.
And if a scientific survey isn’t feasible, should the age gap issue be ignored even if it may be playing a large role, thus letting it perpetuate?
May 24, 2016 4:51 pm at 4:51 pm in reply to: Why the lack of Tznius on Internet Simcha sites?! #1153632JosephParticipantShould we ignore public transgression of halacha and remain silent?
JosephParticipantAnd, kapusta, if the practicalities or cost of conducting an official survey make it impractical to administer, should the community then act as if the age gap is not a major factor and ignore that as an issue even if that admittedly may play a large role?
JosephParticipantkapusta – what would be the minimal requirements to conduct a survey to prove (or disprove) that the age gap is responsible for a large portion of the shidduch disparity, that would allow the survey to be acceptable?
Would every frum family in the US have to be surveyed? How would eligible frum families be identified for participation? What response rate would be minimally acceptable? What questions would have to be asked? Who would cover the (very significant) cost of this scientific survey?
May 24, 2016 3:44 pm at 3:44 pm in reply to: Why the lack of Tznius on Internet Simcha sites?! #1153627JosephParticipantI should say a large portion of the blame belongs to these sites even when the images themselves are not pritzus. They frequently post simcha images with no permission from any of the baalei simcha. I’ve seen multiple times where the baalei simcha were upset to find their pictures on these sites.
JosephParticipantadocs’ satire was a knock against the pro-vaxxers’ argument that it is a given that vacs’ are responsible for all the reductions in diseases over the last X decades/centuries by virtue of the fact that both occurred over the same rough time periods.
May 24, 2016 3:25 pm at 3:25 pm in reply to: Why the lack of Tznius on Internet Simcha sites?! #1153622JosephParticipantThe sites should at least pixelate the portion of the image where they are touching or are improperly clad (i.e. elbows/knees and above), if they don’t have the decency to not publish it.
JosephParticipantat least a semi comprehensive study before trying to change the system
What would you expect the minimal requirements to be for this semi-comprehensive study to be acceptable?
JosephParticipantkapusta, what kind of proof do you want? Will you accept anything less than a scientific study of the marriage demographics of the yeshivish/Orthodox community by Pew Research?
JosephParticipantCharlie, how many Wall Street paygrade jobs are there in Memphis and Rochester?
JosephParticipantAvi, I thought Lieberman is opposed to a Palestinian state altogether.
JosephParticipantDo Chasidim go to the mikva on Yom Kippur morning?
JosephParticipantDY: Most eligible American voters take that approach.
JosephParticipantcy: An individual can benefit from herd immunity without being part of the herd and thus avoid the risk of immunization from a particular rare, but treatable, disease such as diphtheria.
This approach would fit into the two quotes in my last comment.
JosephParticipantcatch yourself: As Feivel requested I field these questions, allow me to respond on his behalf. I refer you to his earlier comment(s), specifically, “I do not take into consideration how these decisions will affect the general health of the world. Only how those receiving the vaccinations ( in this case my family) will be affected” and “I wasn’t stating an opinion as to what I believe global public policy should be.”
(Feivel: How am I doing?)
JosephParticipantFeivel, can you share specifically which vacs you discourage your children/grandchildren from receiving, and your reasoning for each of those decisions?
JosephParticipant“The real question is whether a formal ban was necessary to
get the people who obey the ban not to have whatever it is.”
See the last sentence of Feivel’s last comment.
JosephParticipantgofish: Of course the bans helped. Just because some people violate them doesn’t mean it didn’t help the very many people who adhere to them.
TV is banned and yet some people violate that ban too. It still a tremendous benefit for all the people who don’t have a TV due to the ban, whereas they otherwise would have.
JosephParticipantnewbee: I’ve spent time with numerous gedolim in the city, an opportunity that I would not have had nearly as often had I lived elsewhere.
