ZD, if the state doesn’t provide additional funding, it is the pubic school kids who suffer, not the private school kids.

LC, the Supreme Court ruled in 1972 in Wisconsin v. Yoder that state law mandates on secular studies cannot be enforced on religious communities that object to them as those law then illegally infringe on the free excersize of religion.

The Torah world in America today stands on the shoulders of Rav Moshe Feinstein, the Satmar Rebbe and Rav Aharon Kotler, who essentially built it up almost from scratch.

huju, the real fix is to get rid of all legal restrictions on public funding of private schools. This is legally and legislatively doable (whether state legislation or amendment.) And then school taxes should equally pay for the school of choice of each child, whether public or private.

    Yeshiva of Brooklyn, too.

But there were precious few yeshivos in prewar America, as most Jewish kids went to pubic school. And most were lost to yiddishkeit forever.

Matan1, oh I don’t know, maybe having university sponsored toeiva clubs, the masgiach having a campus meeting to publicly support baalei toeiva, the President calling Bnei Torah “cavemen”, are just a few of the things over the decades that immediately come to mind.

LC, you completely missed the point. If busing under two miles is eliminated, that will affect public school students far more severely than Yeshiva students since Yeshiva students are far more likely to live further from their school than public school students.

cherrybim, Goren would be correct that a conversion that didn’t have the proper kabbalos ohl mitzvos is invalid. Where he went off the rails was that in that particular case the convert did have a proper kabbalos ohl mitzvos and remained a fully religious Jew from time of conversion though death, but Goren for political reasons falsely claimed otherwise. Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Chacham Ovadia Yosef and many others said exactly this.

Fact: Most frum Jews who left Europe between the 1700s and WWII to come to America were no longer frum by time they passed away in America. Their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have a strong possibility of not even knowing they’re Jewish. Most intermarried.

Fact: There were very very few rabbonim in America prior to WWI. Indeed, many shuls were led by laymen without having a rabbi. Even shuls with a rabbi, more often than not said rabbi knew precious little.

    1. The district has a lot more Yiddish speaking children than Spanish speaking children.

    2. It would cost more to hire many full time Yiddish speaking special ed teachers than sending the kids to KJ where they already have full time Yiddish special ed teachers.

    3. If the board cuts back Yiddish speaking services for special ed, the board will also cut back Spanish speaking services for Hispanic public school students.

The public school parents will object very loudly.

    4. If the board cuts out school bus transportation for students living within 1 or 2 miles of their school this will be done for both public and private schools.

    5. 85% of public school students live within 2 miles of their pubic school, since they are geographically placed. 20% of private school students live within 2 miles of their school, since they can choose a more distant school.

As a result, if nearby school busing is eliminated, 85% of public school students will lose busing but only 20% of private school students will lose the same.

The public school students’ parents will object to this much louder than the private school body.

    6. The public schools in the district receive millions and millions of dollars for non-mandated services, curriculum and programs in the public schools. This will be first in line for cuts during an austerity budget.

Additionally, New York State law places no limit on the number of students per class in a public school.

Real fully Torah true observant Jews didn’t come to America in great numbers until the runup to WWII, and especially in the aftermath of WWII.

Prior to WWI the state of American Judaism was very religiously poor and bereft of much real rabbonim.

LC, no need to believe me. Do some rudimentary research. It is indesputable that in NYS after a second voter defeat of the school budget, an austerity budget is imposed with a 0% increase that cuts non-mandated services to makeup the school budget shortfall.

Rav Avigdor Miller on Empty Heads and Wandering Eyes

Q: What could I do to avoid seeing all the פריצות, all the immorality and immoral sights, that are so prevelant on the streets in the summer months?

A: First of all, most important, since you have to pass through the streets, you have to train yourself to keep your eyes on the sidewalk. It’s not too difficult and it’s very important. It’s possible. And it’s only when a man’s eyes wander, then he becomes vulnerable to the environment. Get into the habit of just looking at the sidewalk. Of course, when you have to cross the street, look both ways carefully, go across the street, and then look back at the sidewalk again. You can train your eyes. It takes some effort, though.

Hashem declared ולא תתורו אחרי עיניכם – Don’t go spying after your eyes. If your eyes are wandering, then naturally they will find things. And on the streets, it will not always be good things.

In addition to this, the Rambam says that into a mind full of Torah, a mind that is filled with Torah thoughts and Torah ideals, foolishness won’t be able to enter. Of course, it’s not so easy to do, but every person must develop a habit of thinking in רוחניות, thinking in avodas Hashem. When you’re walking in the street, why shouldn’t you be thinking about avodas Hashem? And these thoughts will drive foolish ideas out of your head. It’s only when the mind is a vacuum, so narishkeit, foolish things, come into the head.

When you walk in the street, why can’t you think about נפלאות הבורא, the wonders of Hashem’s creations?! Why can’t you sing to Hashem in the streets?! Walk and sing to Hashem, “Boruch Hashem, I’m well. I’m not on two crutches, not in a wheelchair. I don’t even need a cane. Boruch Hashem, המכין מצעדי גבר. I can walk. Boruch Hashem, I have my own two kidneys and I am producing urine every day properly. I don’t need any artificial kidneys.”

Anybody who has a healthy heart, should thank הקדוש ברוך הוא that he didn’t need any bypass surgery, that his heart is beating every day normally, functioning perfectly. There’s so much to sing to הקדוש ברוך הוא about. If you have Torah, think about Torah. Get into the habit, train yourself, that your mind should be full of singing to הקדוש ברוך הוא and thinking about the נפלאות הבורא and thinking in דברי תורה too. Repeat your Gemara lesson while you’re walking in the street.

In general, you must know, there are so many things for people to think about – good things. It’s only because the mind is empty and the eyes are wandering, that you have a problem. Naturally, if your head is empty, your wandering eyes will bring all kinds of garbage into your head.

NYS law precludes a tax increase after the second time voters say no.

Since full day kindergarten, gym and art are being paid for even though they are non-mandated, they will be the first things cut if there’s an austerity budget following this second vote against a tax increase.

    1) If the budget is voted down there will be no tax increase.

    2) If the budget is voted down, mandated services such as bussing to private schools will not be affected.

    3) Full day kindergarten, gym and art are not mandated in New York State. This is what austerity will cut back from.

They are under-funding private school kids bussing. They took away bussing on legal holidays that the schools are open on.

Is the safety of private school children going to school on holidays and Sundays unimportant?

Sure you can argue that bussing on legal holidays is non-mandated (unlike bussing on most school days, which is mandated for private schools.) But the board has the right to fund non-mandated options. Non-mandated stuff are funded in public schools, such as gym, art, full day kindergarten, etc. The safety of getting private school kids to school is at least as important as public school kids gym class.

If private school children will have their stuff taken away from them, the parents of private school children (representing a majority of voters) should vote down the tax increase.

Is it also prohibited to discuss Henry Kissinger’s level of observance?

Goren’s lax attitude towards geirus is amply documented. Three years before the Langer case, he converted Helen Seidman, a Christian woman “married” to a kohen and living on a secular kibbutz and the couple’s young daughter. In return, Seidman agreed to withdraw a suit to the Israeli Supreme Court demanding that the State recognize her Reform conversion. As was frequently asked at the time of the Langer case: If Seidman, who had consistently proclaimed her lack of intention to live a Torah life prior to her conversion by Goren, was a Jewess, why was Reb Avraham Borokovsky a goy? Goren converted dozens, if not hundreds, of people barely observant to not at all observant.

    JTA, Jan 5, 1973
    RAV YOSEF CALLS GOREN DICTATOR

Meanwhile new trouble has developed between Rabbi Goren and his colleague Sephardic Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. In an emotional speech to Jerusalem’s Oriental community last night. Rabbi Yosef described Rabbi Goren as a “dictator,” implied that he twisted halacha (religious law) for his own purposes, and begged the Sephardic community to support him in his confrontation with the Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi.

In a voice choked with tears. Rabbi Yosef said, “I live under a dictatorship. I am alone on the battlefield. I need your help to carry on. You do not know what is going on in the Chief Rabbinate. I am alone fighting every hour. I cannot sleep nights.” He alleged that Rabbi Goren imposed his will at Chief Rabbinate meetings by “banging his fist on the table and saying, ‘that is it.’”

Rabbi Yosef made no direct reference to the Langer ruling. However, he said. “I am opposed to extremism but I believe halacha should be dispensed without publicity and without sensationalism. I am of the school of Belt Hillel but I cannot make halacha so plastic that it can fit into any mold. I cannot tell the crowd that everything is permissible, everything is forgiveable.

RY, it was plastered all over the news, with pictures of them seated inside and names of restaurants, of where she and he dined. Both pre-conversion, when she was his girlfriend, and post. Fancy Manhattan restaurants famous for their non-kosher menu where they dated and went together for their birthdays. And this was years before Trump ever ran for President. They were both media celebrities in their own rights for many years (in addition to both of their fathers, for notorious reasons.) The wedding dress, which occurred shortly after the conversion she underwent at the behest of the mother in law who didn’t want a gentile daughter in law and was done for the express purpose of attaining marriage with a Jew (in contravention to prevailing geirus halacha) was immodest as well.

Avi, I’ve addressed all your points earlier. See above where I commented on the Langer/Goren case.

If the Jewish groom eats in non-kosher restaurants and travels on Shabbos, and she’s converting so she can marry him and intends to also eat in non-kosher restaurants that he took her on dates before she became Jewish, and otherwise like her Jewish groom intends to not observe the same mitzvos he doesn’t, that isn’t a valid kabbalos ohel mitzvos. It is no different than a Conservative conversion. Even if the people she’s relying on call themselves Orthodox.

Are you arguing that if a potential convert relied on Conservative Jews her conversion is valid even though the Rabbis she is relying on are wrong for permitting some of the abovementioned? Or that it is LH/HSR to say a Conservative conversion isn’t valid? Or that to make it valid they just have to call themselves Orthodox instead of calling themselves Conservative?
