No. My problem is not the donating. It is just strange the concept of BUYING a segulo. It is a warped idea: You give ????, and in that ????, you are ???? to a ?????. That is tried and tested for thousands of years already, dating up to the ????. But the problem is how much people seem to think that you are simply buying – let’s say it doesn’t work??? Is that less of a reason to give???

Country A and Country B were at war together. The ONLY way to get from one country to another was by crossing the bridge, which was manned by armed guards. Anybody caught trying to cross would be sent back to his own country.

It takes ten minutes to cross the bridge. Every fifteen minutes, the guards would enter a tent to eat/drink for two minutes. Mr X needs to cross the bridge. How should he do so? [Without swimming/parachuting or crossing any other way; without turning invisible and without using a Disillusionment Charm]

Yentingyenta: Here’s one for you then [which isn’t a riddle…]

There was a very lazy, rich man who paid his servants to carry him around wherever he went. When he needed to use the bath, his servants would place him inside, and close the door, locking it from the outside. He would shout ‘HOT’ and they would pour hot water down a tube until he shouted ‘COLD’ or ‘OFF’. One day, he lost his voice. He shouted ‘HOT’, and they began pumping hot water through. To his horror, when he shouted ‘OFF’, they couldn’t hear him over the sound of the water. So water was coming in still.

The room was so small it had exactly enough room for the bath on all sides, and the door opened outwardly to let him out. There was no way of getting out. The water was rising in the tiny room, and eventually he would drown.

WHAT SHOULD HE DO TO SAVE HIMSELF?

    Simple. Borrow the neighbors horse, to make 18. 18/2 = 9; 18/3 = 6; 18/9 = 2. 2+9+6 = 17. Give the guy one back.

Problem is – you didn’t divide 17 horses and give a 1/2 to the oldest, nor a third to the second, nor a ninth to the third. You gave a fraction of 18!!!

Hi – just noticed the riddle, yentingyenta. Is the answer something mathematic, something ridiculous that will find a way around the question without answering it, or something logical, like each person adds a certain number of horses onto the lot and then divide it???

Only on Tuesdays, definitely. Nothing to talk about.

    – On a more serious note, it is a problem. One poster writes something slightly off the point, and it’s all downhill from there!!! I started a thread about questions to ask missionaries, and the majority of posters did nothing like that. Why can’t people start their own threads if they have something to add?

    flyer –

actually only 1% of americans are in the army and they manage fine.

Israel is the only democratic country with conscription. Israel is the only country which needs conscription.

I already wrote before that i am against the forced draft of charedi learners. But your reason begs argument: USA lives in peace at the top of the world, and don’t need defence. I haven;t worked the numbers, but i guess that the 1% of americans is much more than 100% Israelis. Israel is surrounded on all sides by enemies who want to destroy Israel. Nobody in the world wants to assist them. How will they win???

Israel cannot be compared to America.

What I want to know is – what will happen if/when the government make conscription unavoidable, and Chareidim sitting in Yeshiva will all have to go – what will the Gedolim do?

There will be Mecho’os, of course [hopefully peaceful ones, if the Gedolim have their way] – and then what? Will R’ Elyashiv pick himself up and move to America? Are they just going to make a mass revolution to oust the government? Simply evade the draft and send thousands of bochurim to prison???

in reply to: Responsibility to serve – without the politics #884255
    Chortkov
    Participant

I don’t believe anybody actually is unsure of what to

=> The Gedolim say don’t fight; sit and learn. So don’t fight; sit and learn!!

=> The IDF unfortunately don’t make it very easy for Chareidim to serve – some of the stories reminded me of the Russian armies in WW1 where they tried to take the soldiers drafted away from Yiddishkeit!!! Forcing them to sit in rooms with Kol Isha is an atrocity. So there is no question – if your yiddishkeit will be compromised, there is no helping. If the IDF want any cooperation, they may as well become slightly more reasonable.

=> The main focus of a Jew should be his Torah. If that is not possible for personalfinancialother reasons, there is a HETER not to learn. But the whole world was created for Torah only, and without Torah, no country will be successful. Cancelling the Torah learning of the country with the most Harbotzas Torah is unheard of.

There are two types of singing without music: Something like the Maccabeats, which is one guy singing and the others making sounds r singing as the music – that may be assur and is definitely not in the spirit. You can also get something like Dudi Kalish, which is just a choir of people harmonizing – no music. THat is even in the spirit of Sefira to listen to.

The Ben Ish Chai brings a story about SHidduchim:

A carpenter called Avrohom living in Yerushalayim had a large sum of money stolen from his house one night by a thief. The thief escaped to Ein Gedi desert, where he got lost and died of thirst. A guy called Eliyahu was touring Ein Gedi, found a Meis Mitzvah and buried him, taking the money for himself, before returning home to Bnei Brak and hiding the money in a hollow tree in his garden.

That day, his father died, and he forgot about the money. During the shiva week, a big storm uprooted the trees all over the neighborhood.

After the Shiva, it was Eliyahu’s job to provide money for the family, and he traveled to Jerusalem, looking for a job. He was hired as an apprentice by none other than … Avraham the Carpenter.

Avraham went to collect lumber from the lake, where all the fallen trees were lying. He opened up one, and found his money, lying in it’s original wallet. He told Eliyahu the miraculous story of how his money stolen from him was returned in a tree. Eliyahu told him HIS part of the story.

Avrohom insisted that Eliyahu should take the money, but Eliyahu refused. So, suspecting that Eliyahu was embarrased to take the money, he asked his wife to bake a cake and hide the money inside, and gave it to Eliyahu before Eliyahu’s holiday.

Eliyahu unsuspectingly took the cake, and rode on his horse and wagon out of Jerusalem. A border guard searched his carriage, saw the cake and asked to buy it. Eliyahu sold it to him.

Meanwhile, the guard went and gave the cake as a wedding gift that night… and you can guess who made the wedding. Avraham the CArpenter.

The conclusion was that Avraham, so impressed by the boy’s middos and charm, suggested that Eliyahu marry his daughter, and the happy couple took the money… and lived happily ever after…

Humility is a strange thing…. when you think you’ve got it, -you lost it.

Incorrect. Knowing that one is humble is not a contradiction to being humble.

Humility means understanding that any qualities and talents that one has is not one’s own work or success, rather it is God Who has given him these qualities, and one is therefore no better than one without these abilities.

Is Java a Graphic User Interface (GUI)? Is it code or can you actually design the program yourself by drawing up the buttons and text boxes, and simply filling in the code yourself?

Also, I found the program on my computer (the visual basic 6 interface), and i just started on it. VBA is also useful for macros in any Microsoft Office program.

Like the Internet – billions of good reasons to have [e.g. convenience, leisure, business, trade], it can be used too easily for the bad. The same it with Facebook. NOBODY has ever been killed from using YWN. Unfortunately, too many people – mainly teenage girls – have been murdered brutally through Facebook. People have left Yiddishkeit because of Facebook. One can create friends on whom we Daven daily ???????? ???? ??. How many stories are there of the countless people who have done terrible things online – on social networking sites – good, honest people whose temptation caught up with them? We are safer without the outside world at our fingertips. We are safer to simply stick to people we know and can see, without forging relationships with those anonymous.
