On the Coffee Room Homepage, in the Table of Threads, right at the top there is a link stating “Add New”. Just click there.

But let me give you a friendly warning – if your first threads are about controversial topics, you will be labelled as a troll. So best leave it pareve for a bit before warming the world up!

BTW – Posters have to understand that discussions about Minhaggim and the like should not be taken personally. If somebody asked for the heter about Mitzvah Tanz, it is not at all a legitimate answer – and sounds pretty immature as well – to turn around and say “Well… you have mixed shmorg!”

You can start or continue another thread ranting about the lack of tznius at certain Chasunas, or you can shout about how you love to hold your wifes hand in public and are delighted to see others doing the same and encourage it (Tribute to ridiculous post from Old Man before) – on another thread. These things are neither here nor there.

When my father [not at all Chassidish; see my username!] was a bachur, he was at a very good friends [also not Chassidish, but “Chassidish inclined”] Chasuna, and the Bobover Rebbe zt”l (R’ Shloime) was dancing Mitzvah Tanz, and my father and some friends were standing on chairs and watching the Rebbe.

R’ Matisyahu Solamon shlit”a was at the Chasuna, and he walked over and tapped my father and said to him “Is there anything to see?” And smiled. My father got off his chair.

I have a Litvishe grandfather who refused to dance Mitzva Tanz by his own sons Chasuna, even though there was a Mitzva Tanz because the Kallas side insisted. My Grandfather just arranged with the badchan not to call him up.

R’ Yehuda Hertzl Henkin quotes his grandfather as saying that some pants are more Tznius than some skirts. R’ Ovadia says the same.

That does not mattir the pants (Trousers, for those who speak English!), it assers those skirts!

Halevi – you are saying that the “Eight” can be a count (Eight of something) or just a description (the Eighth of Something). But that doesn’t answer the terminology used – ???? ??? ????, which means the Eight Days of Milah. This is not true; there is only one day which is on the Eighth day of the Babies Life? (Unless you ??? ????? the whole thing with some sort of poetic lisence)

sm29 – But are the days leading up to important?

jewishfeminist – Experiencing a Shabbos beforehand does not make all eight days significant; in fact it does the opposite – the only significance in the number “eight” {according to this pshat} is that there should be a number “seven” involved! The other six days are totally irrelevant!!!

My Shul has a learning program where they do NOT pay, and the Rav at the Opening of Bein Hazmanim spoke about Torah Lishma, etc. etc.

However, it is not so shver to give a monetary incentive — most bochurim who come are bochurim who want to learn and would learn anyways; this just encourages that they all come to a central location with a Kol Torah rather than learning at home/random shul, and stops a lot of shmuzing that would otherwise inevitably happen where bochurim meet bein hazmanim.

Yes, it is not ideal for somebody to only learn for the money. But that is not the point of these programs. AND the Mishna says ????? ???? ??? ???? ??? ???? ????? ??? ???? ?? ????.

It obviously depends on what sort of style you are looking for, which is normally determined or seriously influenced by your Gender, Age, IQ Level and Background.

Some people prefer a basic Hagadda, without many extras, with only translation, and perhaps a few pictures. Those range from the Artscroll Childrens Haggada to the Boruch Chait/Gadi Pollack Hagodo (children up to six or seven generally prefer Artscroll, Kids eight-120 prefer the Gadi Pollak [which is more advanced]).

There is a “Visions of Greatness” Haggadda with a nice Moshol and Story on every piece, which is very illuminating and makes a great [ENGLISH] read for the Ladies.

For use at the Seder, it is very impractical to have a Hagadda with lots of Pirushim, which require lots of page turning, and there is no time to look things up at the Seder anyway. However, for preparation, there are thousands of excellently produced Haggados for sale! For nice, sweet “vertelach” of varied style and from a range of sources, see ??? ??. For a more heavy (buty excellent if you are leading the Seder), see R’ Shimshon Pincus’s Hagodo. (I think R’ Yackov Galinsky has a Hagodo as well).

Another extremely interesting Haggadah is the “Seder Aruch” – it is a 3 Volume set, and the Third Volume is the Haggadah. It goes into all the Minhagim and Halachos with all the different reasons (Pshat Remes Drush Sod!). Also very important for the one leading the seder.

The Toras Chaim Hagodo is not so easy to use, but another excellent Sefer brought out with a collection of the Rishonim (Rashi, Ritva, Rashba, Shibolei Haleket, Avudraham, and a few more I cannot remember) which are very “yesodosdik” to know, but with less things you would want to say over at the Seder.

I’m afraid I have no idea in the Chassidishe market, (although I had a Rebbi in school who was very into Likutei Kerem Shlomo, but I have no idea)

    — BTW — Lots of people are saying that Seder is not for Lomdus/Halacha, it is more for Hashkafa and Emunah — you are 100% correct that a focal part of the Seder is about Emunah understanding and reliving the Geulah. However, discussing the Halachos are also a chelek of the Mitzvah – See SHULCHAN ARUCH where the ???? explains ???? ??? ???? ????? ???? ??????? ????? ????? ????? ???????? ?? ??????? ????. This is HALOCHO.

(If anybody is looking for seforim who discuss the Lomdus involving Pesach, there is a set of Seforim by R’ Moshe Shternbuch called ?????? ???????, and another excellent set of seforim called ????? ???. [There is also a sefer brought out with a collection of all the Brisker Toros, but i don’t remember the name.)

When I was in Sixth Grade, I went with six friends collecting for our school. We were going to go in a Limo, which we managed to arrange for the same price as a taxi (The taxis charge per hour, and we found a Limo for the whole night) – it wouldn’t have cost us a penny more. However, we were advised against it by other groups who have taken limos in the past and found that they were received less warmly than in years that they took taxis.

BTW – There is a big difference between a collected from Israel paying airfare and hotel – if the collector told you he had a first class ticket and was staying in a five star hotel, of course you wouldn’t give him a penny. If a limousine is more expensive (which it is in most cases), then obviously using tzeddaka money is not ideal.

Utah — “Chazal made statements… I don’t think that they made statements about not saying Good Shabbos to the opposite gender”

Incorrect. Chazal definitely did make such statements, as quoted by posters before – ??? ?????? ????? ??? ???. A simple transalation of this is that a man is prohibited from “asking peace” – aka greeting – a woman. (Halevi before explained that it is not necessarily the intention of the words, but the statement is there to debate).

Anyways, “#takingbeingfrumtofar” is a bit harsh – not everything Chazal had to say explicitly; the Shulchan Aruch says “Hisrachek min Hanoshim” — distance yourselves from women. The Gemara countrless times numerates the issurim of having too much contact with the opposite gender. Whether greeting is specifically ossur is probably irrelevant; if it causes Hirhurim, it is Ossur.

There is a similar maaseh brought down where somebody asked one of the tanoim about why it is correct to heal the sick – if G-d gave them an illness, apparently it is His will that they be sick. The Tanah answered with the same analogy, by giving him some wheat and telling him to eat it raw.

Apparently, regarding things that are in our capacity to control, HKB”H gave us the abilities to enable us to control.

The Gemara Kesuvos already gave the answer to all such moral dilemmas:–

    ???? ??? ???? ??? ??? ?????? ??? ??? ??? ?? ????? ?????? ?????? ???? ??? ?? ??. V’dok. (??? ????? from R’ Shlomo Zalman zt”l before!)

Which means: The Gemara brings a story about R’ Acha who used to pick up Kallas and dance with her on his shoulders [which is obviously pritzus in our circles]. The Rabbanan asked him if they could do the same, to which he answered “If she is compared to you like a plank of wood , then go ahead. If not, then don’t!”

The same pretty much sums up all such dilemmas. If you feel, unlike most normal adolescent males, that your casual contact with women does not cause impure thoughts, then it is the most decent thing to do to greet (unless of course SHE will feel uncomfortable, which is sort of counterproductive). However, the rest of us humans should not.

(Dunno if I am generalizing too much or if its just me being honest!)

yekke: there are some who believe that everyone in the world should be learning and not working. you think they are wrong but you need to be considerate and tolerant of this view even if you disagree and think its wrong.

There is nobody who says that somebody who has no bread to put on the table should still learn except for R’ Shimon Bar Yochai, about whom the gemoro says that “rov” of us are not on the Madreiga to follow. Anybody who can learn is absolutely ?????? to.

I don’t think ‘tolerant’ is the right term. Something which is wrong is wrong, and there is no such thing as accepting wrong shittas. You are correct – as I pointed out before – that a poster being wrong does not give an allowance to another poster to be aggressive, antagonistic or rude, nor for it to develop into a personal feud. But it does give one an allowance – definitely on a blog like this – for one to state his own opinion and perhaps to debate it. In ‘real life’, often it is more prudent to keep one’s opinion to oneself, for it could be counterproductive to offer one’s own opinion of things. But on a blog like this, where posts are put on simply so that other people should see them, it is only right to point out if something is wrong. Again, in a polite and torahdike fashion, of course.

For one guy, the right thing is for him to be in kollel, and for another guy, the right thing for him is to get a job. Some fathers would come into the women’s section to dance, some fathers certaintly wont. Everyone can do what they deem is right, and let everyone else do what they want.

I’m sorry, but I do not agree with your approach. Life is not about ‘do what you like’ and ‘live and let live’. There is definitely a RIGHT and a WRONG, and nothing in between. Everything in life – absolutely everything – is either ???? ?’ or the opposite. There can be different shittas about whether something is right or wrong, but nothing is neither RIGHT nor WRONG. If one feels something is wrong, there is a ???? to be ????? the wrongdoer.

Of course, it is true that some people should be going to kollel and others do not have to – somebody who has no ????? and is part of the “???” of R’ Shimon bar Yochai/R’ Yishmoel – of course is not ????? to sit and learn, but should be ????? to earn for his family. Somebody who has hit the millions, and can afford to live comfortably and still learn all day is ?????? to invest his energies into ????? ?. There is no different ‘approaches’ about life; different people are given different oppurtunities by HKB”H. It most definitely is NOT a free for all, do what you like.

when posters “knock” someone else’s point of view, this only leads to sinas chinam and chillul Hashem.

This is a good point. Even if the first thing you said is not necessarily correct, and there is something wrong, there is no reason to be nasty about it. One can disagree firmly yet politely. There is no reason to turn personal when disagreeing about something.

However, there is also the other side of the coin – readers should understand that discussions get heated, and things that are not meant are said. [Normal, sane, frum] People do not mean to get personal, but sometimes in the heat of action things slip out. Readers should not be insulted, but should take things with a pinch of salt.

Also, a lot of posters here apparently have not much of a sense of humour, and cannot tell when a poster who on face value seems to be saying something ridiculously insulting and unreasonable, but is really just trying to be funny by writing something cynical or something so obviously controversial they are probably being funny (Poppa ?????) – some people have to learn not to take everything seeriously.

is anyone bothered by the double standards in some jewish magazines. On one page you have an article by a rav saying how over involvement in gashmiyas is the cause of the shiduch crisis but on the next you see an ad for pesach in crete or a dining room set for $2000

Not at all – the ad is for those with no unmarried kids, who don’t have a problem with the shidduch crisis!

but is it right to promote spending tons of money on some fancy vacation for yom tov where people will be eating non stop when there are families who struggle to pay tuition and put food on the table

Sorry sir, but I think you are a troll. If your problem with the ads are something to do with the Shidduch crisis, then why are you talking now about families who cannot afford? You are not at all talking about the double standard, nor are you complaining about people splashing out where others cannot, you are just trolling.

The Ami, for those who didn’t read it, has an article about gilgulim of souls from the Holocaust. They quoted a story about a “rosh yeshiva” who remained nameless, some Kabbalist/Psychyatrist sort of fellow, a dozen goyim, and a few women who dreamt they were in the holocaust which was, of course, irrefutable proof that they were there once before…

Then the Ami actually suggested that anybody who died thinking “I wish I wasn’t Jewish” would come back once again as a goy.

I am not at all knowledgeable in this area, so I won’t comment, but I found the article interesting yet distasteful. Not because I dislike reading about the holocaust, and not because of Gilgulim – but the thought of a woman writing an article without any halachic/hashkafik mekoros about a topic so obviously complicated and above our heads… annoys me.

I think there was a Chassidishe rebbe (Maybe the Yismach Moshe?) who I was told remembered his previous gilgulim as Moshe Rabeinu’s sheep, and of a bystander during the times of Korach “and he was the only one who didn’t take sides” or something like that.

About your problem with this being ????? – I am not really sure what you are saying – any time when you are doing something and not being ????? to do THAT you are ?????. (Not different to a ?????? ?????* ????? ???? ????? ????, where you are simply not intending to do that ???? even though you know full well that ???? ??? is ????) – So please rephrase your question.

    Sorry if I was unclear!

    * Not sure how to spell that
